driver1980 The cover elements--composition, colors, etc.--really convey the sense of impending danger; and I like the details such as the woman's shadow and the cobblestone. Very effective cover.

Compared to some of the "trade dress" that's been thrust at readers of the past couple of decades, I don't find the go-go checks all that horrible. Yeah, I said that. Me too! I will always have a soft spot for the Go-Go Checks.

In December 1965, I'll buy these with my 2 bucks allowance: Adventure #341 Hmmm, what is that new banner(?) across the top? OMG it's the DC Go-Go Checks! Yes, it looks like the DCs published in late December '65 (such as this comic, on sale December 23 according to the late great Mike) are the first ones to sport the fabled Go-Go Checks. DC, 12 cents Avengers #25 Marvel, 12 cents Betty and Veronica #122 Archie, 12 cents Challengers of the Unknown #48 On sale in early December ( December 2--again, thanks to Mike's site), so no Go-Go Checks. Never been much of a Challs fun, but since the Doom Patrol guest in this issue I'll buy this. DC, 12 cents Doom Patrol #101 Also on sale December 2: no Go-Go Checks. No matter; at this point, this series is a must buy for me. DC, 12 cents Falling in Love #81 On sale December 16: no Go-Go Checks. Love this Colan cover! DC, 12 cents Fantastic Four #48 When I was a kid I had a coverless copy of this, bought form the collectibles store on my block. I never saw FF #48's cover until maybe 10 years ago, when I got back into comics. Marvel, 12 cents Fantasy Masterpieces #1 An irresistible cover--that white background, the colorful insets, Stan's breathless prose. Who could resist this?? Btw IRL I bought this comic about 5 years ago, I think at a street fair. Marvel, 12 cents Girls' Love Stories #117 On sale December 23: Go-Go Checks present and accounted for. Love Tony Abruzzo's faces. He's soooo underrated. DC, 12 cents Lois Lane #63 On sale December 23: Go-Go Checks. The Wayne Boring Superman--the face, anyway--is a bit jarring to my eye. I guess for this particular cover Weisinger wanted a more serious, traditional Superman instead of Schaffenberger's often humorous, oafish Superman. Despite the cover, LL is a must-buy for me. DC, 12 cents Metal Men #18 On sale December 23: Go-Go Checks. DC, 12 cents Patsy Walker's Fashion Parade #1 Flipping through this issue at the stands it looks like this does not include any comic book stories...just pin-ups and features. It almost seems like a magazine rather than a comic--kinda cool! I'll buy this. Marvel, 25 cents Wonder Woman #160 On sale December 16: no Go-Go Checks. DC, 12 cents X-Men #17 The red cover makes this a stand out; I'll buy this. Marvel, 12 cents Young Romance #140 On sale December 9: no Go-Go Checks. Great Jay Scott Pike cover. DC, 12 cents. 14 @12 cents = 1.68 1 Giant @ 25 cents = 25 cents Total: $1.93 I'll buy some licorice whips with the change. No Go(-Go Checks, that is) Go-Go Checks And not to be outdone, here's mighty Marvel!

What about hookas or other "smoking" pipes? Sorry for the delay. Hookahs & "other smoking pipes" are okay. Great covers so far!

Thanks again everyone! All right, for this week let's try this topic: pipes, the kind that are used for smoking. Your cover should include a person or entity smoking a pipe, or holding a pipe, or even just the darn pipe by itself in non-smoking mode (on a desk, table, counter, or wherever). But it has to be a smoker's pipe. There should be at least one such pipe on the cover; it does not necessarily have to dominate the cover, but it shouldn't be teeny-tiny either. See my cover as a guide/example. How did I come up with this week's scintillating topic? Glad you--er, I--asked. My inspiration was this comic's cover (below). I figured, well, we've done topics such as snow, hats, winter scenes, etc., so what else could I mine from this awesome cover? The Cover Contest Rules:- Post one, and only one, classic cover that fits the theme of the contest. - Cover must be from a published comic book or collected volume published before February 2014. - As a courtesy, please include the title and the issue number of the comic in case some posters cannot see your image. - Covers must be posted before voting begins. - Voting takes place next Tuesday, Feb. 13 2024, beginning at 12:01 am PST and ending at 11:59 am PST. - Vote by posting the name of the poster whose cover best fits the theme or that you simply like the most in bold.
- The winner of the contest is the entrant with the most votes after the voting period ends. - The winner chooses the theme for the next week's contest. - If you don't think the cover fits the theme, don't vote for it; please don't post disparaging remarks about it. - If a cover is more recent than the classic time frame, kindly point it out to the poster, who may then choose an alternate before voting begins. I hope you all enjoy this topic--I know you'll find some great, unusual covers. My pipe example: Strange Adventures #79 by Gil Kane !

Wow, nice! Thanks everyone...and special thanks to foxley, MDG, jester, and Edo for the votes for that Cardy cover. I love the cover not only for its visual beauty, but it also evokes the sense of being in a nightmare that you can't wake up from New contest up soon

In November 1865 I'm spending my $2 on these: Action #332 DC, 12 cents Adventure #340 DC, 12 cents Amazing Spider-Man #33 I'm not much of a Spider-Man fan, but who in their right mind could pass up this cover?! Ditko hit it out of the park with this one. Marvel, 12 cents Avengers #24 One of my all-time favorite Avengers and Marvel covers ever. Marvel, 12 cents Betty and Veronica #121 Archie, 12 cents Fantastic Four #47 Marvel, 12 cents Girls' Romances #114 Romita cover. DC, 12 cents Lois Lane #62 DC, 12 cents Patsy and Hedy #104 Marvel, 12 cents Secret Hearts #109 Romita again. DC, 12 cents Sea Devils #27 DC, 12 cents Superman #183 Still can't resist those 80-page DC giants and I love that Superman's directly addressing the audience. DC, 25 cents Tales to Astonish #76 I'll buy this for the Colan cover. Marvel, 12 cents Teen Titans #1 DC, 12 cents Young Love #53 Guess who the cover artist for this DC romance comic is--yep, him again. DC, 12 cents 14@12 cents = 1.68 1 Giant @25 cents Total: $1.93 I'll use the change to buy a few of these--always loved the "strawberry" filling A Romita triple play!

Time to spend $2 again. I hope this link works. When I clicked on the link in my previous post from a couple of weeks ago, I was instead taken to a page that shows that, tragically, Mike has passed away. Very sad news. He left us a great site which I know I've gotten a lot of enjoyment from, so hopefully he's reading some DC comics up in heaven. Yes, he passed away in late November. Some here at CCF posted about it over in the RIP thread--here's a link: classiccomics.org/post/526366/threadMike is missed by many, not just the comic book community, but he made sure his site will live on-- it is still being maintained and updated--yet another testament to his uncommon generosity and his interest in others.
