Ah...the good 'ol spinner racks. How I miss them. It was always great as a kid to go into a convenience store or department store and see those racks filled to the brim with comic books. I think of some of the times...times that stand out like snapshots from the past.
- I remember looking at an issue of Rom in 1985 at a spinner rack with the Eurythmics new song, "Would I lie to you?" blaring out into the store.
-I remember seeing an issue of Crystar that stayed on the spinner rack forever. I swear, they kept that issue on the rack for months. I remember that each time I went back it would be more damaged than before(creased and folded). I sometimes wonder whatever happened to that poor book. Certainly, it would be the equivalent of book abuse...hehe. An inquistion of sorts.
-I remember my parents stopping at a gas station during a road trip sometime in 1977(I believe)...and I begged them to buy a comic book from spinner rack for me. It was an issue of Black Panther and he was hanging from the side of a cliff. I'm sure that I'll think of some more, but those are some off the top of my head. Let me know about any of your tales about the Rack. Thanks.

I've thought about a few more characters that I completely dislike:
Gilgamesh...like Dr. Druid, dude should not even sniffed an Avengers roster spot.
Sersi...not interesting in any way...bland character
Firelord....don't know...just never liked him.
The more I think about it, the more I realize that the Avengers needed to be more picky in their membership back in the day.

"Stripling"(love that word). And probably "dolt"...learned them both from reading Marvel comic books as a young child. Great to have such role models as the Red Skull, Kingpin and Doctor Doom.

I bought a ton of Invaders in the mid-80's. I still like the book, but not as much as I did back then. I look back and I cringe at the writing of Roy Thomas. Absolutely abysmal and amateurish. Trite. Also, the work of Robbins and Springer, which I used to like, well, it kind of grinds me a little bit. I was never a fan of the gaunt and anorexic look of the characters. Don't get me wrong...I'll still read the Invaders, but the luster has worn off and the series did not age well in my opinion. I also wish they had focused on more on Italian and Japanese axis characters rather than pulling out the Nazis all the time. A little diversity would have been nice. I also feel that they jerked Union Jack around. He had potential and they never developed him properly. Oh, and the Crusaders were pretty bad.

Hi,
I keep most of my comic books, aside from selling some to reduce my stockpile, but there are those times when I dislike a comic book so much that I no longer want it near my collection...so incensed, that I would rather burn or rip it to shreds rather than sell it for cheap. The occasions have been rare...but I remember a few...
Amazing Spider-Man #267. "The Commuter Cometh." Complete trash by Peter David. Appalling that Marvel even had the stones to put this out on the racks. BURNED it in a campfire.
Superman: Man of Steel #47. One of the handful of DC comics that I read. It was about racism and, you know, I go to my comic books for escapism and to get away from the world's problems. RIPPED it to shreds.
Sectaurs: 3. Another failed series. Terrible, terrible, terrible. Tore out the pages and used it to put under the cat's litter box.
Thankfully, these are only times I've physically destroyed comic books because I felt they weren't worthy of being with the other titles.

I read 52 floppies. I know, compared to a lot of you guys, that's minor league. However, for me, it was the most I've read in a one month period. So, how many did you read in August. Oh and please don't count any of the modern books because, well, they aren't classics. Also, please don't include things like trade paperbacks, graphic novels, etc. Thanks.

Dr. Druid
Talon
The Impossible Man
Those are the three off the top of my head. Dr. Druid should not even have sniffed the Avengers. I had to hold my nose in the mid-80's when buying the Avengers(imagine having to deal with Druid and Starfox in the same comic book...scary, crappy times for the Avengers in the mid-80's. Talon...just never liked him. Too much of a comedic element..and it was forced humor, which, usually, failed. The Impossible Man...one of the dopiest(not "dope") concepts in comicdom. "He" can basically control the world, hell, the universe, but somehow he is just obtuse enough not to know what he is doing..yet, at the same time, he is sly and cunning. Oh, and he comes from "Poppup." Just a stupid concept and his appearance in the the FF were needless and detracted from the comic itself. So let me know what characters you genuinely dislike..hate..or whatever. Thanks.

Can't believe I forgot about the LivingTribunal. Another one might be the Champion of the Universe. I remember a couple appearance by him.
Also... The Magus The Sphinx

Or I perhaps books that you once loved, but gradually lost their luster. For me, it is the Invaders. I bought a couple issues of the series in the late 70's as a young kid and then in the mid-80's I got back into the series(around 7 years or so after its final issue). I liked the the team, the stories, the art. It was a great book. The Invaders and Defenders were both my favorite teams at that time.
I still like the Defenders, but the Invaders? Hmmm...I guess I can say that the book has aged badly. I read the title now and I really don't like the art by Robbins/Springer and the writing by Roy Thomas just looks amateurish(especially when dealing with the lexicon of the British heroes). I guess part of the reason is that I don't really like Captain American anymore and the team that I once thought was awesome...now has faded a bit for me. Now, I don't hate the book...I just don't enjoy it like I used to. Anyone else out there have a book that they once enjoyed(especially as a young kid/teenager) and then later realized that it was not as good as it had been in the past?

Ah...this group. I never got into them back in the day during their limited series and intermittent appearances in various Marvel mags. But, now, as I look at trying titles that I never really gave a chance, I am considering Squadron. I believe I've read exactly one Squadron Supreme comic and that was sometime in the late 1980's. I guess that I felt that they were a bit "DCish." They always reminded me of the Justice League and seemed like the kind of team that DC would produce. Since the back issues of the group are dirt cheap and fairly abundant, I figure I might give it a chance. Plus, I do like a lot of Mark Gruenwald's work on Quasar and Captain America, and Squadron seemed to be his baby, so perhaps I am missing something with this group? Any Squadron fans out there care to respond? Positives and negatives to their limited series? Thanks.

I don't know about any of you, but I've always had a penchant for characters that exert massive levels of power. I'm not talking about Death or Eternity because they are beyond the scope of the power principle. I am talking about being like Galactus, Thanos, etc. Let's make a list and talk about these characters. Off the top of my head:
The High Evolutionary Grandmaster The Collector The Stranger The Over-Mind

So I finally saw Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and found it rather middling like the first film. I still can't relate to the characters and view them as the true GOTG. Starlord, Rocket Raccoon, Groot....were they depicted in some GOTG series that I never read? Gamora and Drax..I think Silver Surfer when I see them. The GOTG that I remember started for me as a young child in Marvel Presents and then in the 90's I was a fan of the revived team at that time. Granted, I didn't stay with the series until it's end..I probably bailed out midway through it. The GOTG that I remember, and will be the true Guardians to me are, Vance Astro, Charlie-27, Martinex, Yondu, Starhawk and Nikki. Never liked Talon, so I don't include him. The depiction of Yondu on the big screen is also pretty abysmal. Here you have a very calm, Buddhist type figure in the the book, but on screen he is depicted as some mercenary redneck. Oh, and I believe Charlie -27 is once again going to be a victim of political correctness because I think Ving Rhames is going to play him in the next film. Sorry, but just as Samuel Jackson will never represent Nick Fury to me, Charlie-27 won't be the same to me. If he is supposed to be Charlie-27...I mean, I don't follow the series or news of the group at all, so it could be I am mistaken. I guess the gist of it is that I simply can't come to terms with the GOTG on the screen versus the comic book. They are two completely different teams. Perhaps someone out there could tell me why the classic team was pretty much neglected through the first 2 films. Any thoughts?

get enticed enough to order from them? I know the ads for back issue comics were probably used by some people. But I'm talking about the ads like.. The perpetual bodybuilding ads ("Let Joe Weider build you a better body for just $7.98.") Selling seeds(and the various prizes you could win.
Selling Grit. Did anyone on here actually sell that paper?
Make Money customizing cars, vans, cycles, inside and out.
The karate ads, like the one with the Giant life-like practice dummy.
The 3 complete fishing outfits ad...1977 models...
Spalding basketballs with Dr. J and Rick Barry.
The Johnson and Smith Company with the gimmicky things like x-ray glasses, magic coin, etc.
I confess that the only one that I ordered from was the Johnson and Smith Company. I think it was a UFO balloon or something...was a long, long time ago, so my memory is foggy. Anyone else order from these companies? And, if so, was it worth it or did you get ripped off. Oh, I'll bet those bodybuilding courses were a complete joke.

The definitive age of the Avengers. Period. I read these off the racks in the 70's. When I think of Avengers, I think of the Perez era...nothing come close. And, man, could Perez draw debris. Dude could make a battered wall look like a masterpiece! Show me someone that can draw better. I've yet to see him/her. Perez is in a class by himself. Avengers represented the pinnacle for him.
