Couldn't agree more!!! And dont get me wrong xmen 108(think that was Claremont) to 143 was the best X-men run, IMHO, but it only took 164-166 to full invest in the title and collect them. Currently I have 96-300. The Count Nefaria story is at the level of the Proteus or Dark Phoenix Saga. If the Claremont/Byrne run had started at issue 125, I'd say you would've been invested by #127 too. You sir are 100% correct! 125-128 is actually my favorite Xmen storyline and probably right behind Avengers 164-166, in my top 3 favorite stories of all time. FF 242-244 is number 3. Yes I am definitely a bronze age Marvel and Byrne fan

Going back to first post and the idea of a creator with the Midas touch (i.e., someone who has transformed series/characters multiple times), I'd say Steve Englehart. I can think of several series or characters where there's a noticeable improvement in quality and inventiveness when he comes in: Captain America, Doctor Strange, Incredible Hulk, Green Lantern. But with the one-time examples, I'd say Mike Baron and Jackson Guice with Wally West. Their Wally is quite a departure from what he was before. It's been a while since I read it, and I think I recall him being a jerk fairly often, but he was a more textured character than what he was in New Teen Titans before that.

Avengers 166 completed my all time favorite Avengers storyline. If I had to choose just three issues... probably too. Claremont/Byrne got much more exposure, but Shooter/Byrne could've rocked just as much. Couldn't agree more!!! I just got an order in the mail from Lonestar Comics. I decided to fill some gaps. I bought: Avengers #166, 190, 237, 253, 282, 283, 289, 290 Avengers Annual #11, 12, 13 Captain America #268, 276, 277 Excalibur #3 Suicide Squad #5 Inspired by reading along with the recent 3-part CCF Podcast on Avengers, I decide to complete a big hybrid run of Avengers (meaning originals and TPBs combined). So a lot of this is in the form of black & white Essentials (and other TPBs), but I'm now only missing one regular issue through #300 and one non-reprint annual through #16. To be frank, I think I just forgot to put those two in my cart. I moving closer to a similar hybrid run (floppies & reprints) of Captain America through #350, but I've got a handful still to go. The Excalibur issue gives me the first 10 issues. The Suicide Squad issue gives me the first 9 issues. Avengers 166 completed my all time favorite Avengers storyline.

After reading the thread "What classic comics have you read lately?" I decided I want to read the classic horror collections from Marvel and DC. What collections are out there? I'm hoping I can get most from my library.
I have already ready all of Hellboy BTW.
thanks J

Since I purchased Amazing Spider-man 161 I've decided to read issues 161-164. I haven't read these issues in over 20 years curious to see how they hold up.

Amazing Spiderman 161. Part one of the 2 parter with Nightcrawler. This came out when I really really really liked the XMEN and Nightcrawler wasmy favorite character. I was probably 12. Now maybe I'll actually go back and read these 2 issues.

Rereading THE NAIL. I don't think it truly can be considered classic but I just thought the art was amazing. Come to think of it I think I'm rereading it to look at Alan Davis' art and not the story so much.
