Greg LaRocque was great when he was doing Legion of Superheroes back in the mid to late 80's. I enjoyed his Flash. Awk-ward...

Several of the artists named strike me more as "mediocre" than "underrated."
Cei-U! Definitely not referring to Don Newton!

Dick Dillin was on JLA when I first started reading comics so I am rather fond of his work.

Ron Frenz- Sure he can ape anyone's style but he's one of those solid guys at Marvel in the 80s Ron Wilson- I like his work. Rafael Kayanan Claudio Castelini

I like Mike Deodato is a really good artist that I don't think gets enough praise.

LaRocque, on the other hand, has never impressed me as a storyteller or a draftsman. Cei-U! I summon the follow-up!

Herb Trimpe surely belongs on this unfortunate list.
As, I'll venture to say, does Tom Sutton.

You can count me as a fan of Tom Sutton, he is very underrated artist and I just loved his attention to details and settings. Believe me he doesn't get the attention that he deserved.

Rich buckler always turned in a first class job wether he was copying Kirby or Adams.

Rich buckler always turned in a first class job wether he was copying Kirby or Adams. Or John Buscema or some kind of mish-mash of all of the above. I think he was a very dependable guy who would never give you that occasional all-time classic masterpiece that the very best artists were capable of, but would almost always give you something better than average. I can't think of many times I was disappointed by Rich Buckler's art in a comic. From the things I've seen, I'd say the closest he came to producing that extra-special piece of work was the short-lived Deathlok run in Astonishing Tales. I think he put more heart and soul into that one than anything else I saw from him - not that I don't believe he was trying his best on all the other comics he drew, just that he seemed to go above-and-beyond with Deathlok. Klaus Janson's inks played a big part , too.

I have an extra special place in my heart for his All Star Squadron work.

Was that DC? I don't think I've seen any of Buckler's DC work.
I'll nominate Don Perlin. I loved his self-inked work on Werewolf by Night. I think I had already quit the Defenders by the time he came on board, or maybe I read an issue or two, but anyway, from what I've seen, I don't think he was suited to a conventional superhero team series (which is what the Defenders had become by the time he worked on the book. Though it might have just been another case of his art only looking right when he inked it himself.
I still think he'd have been an interesting choice for Spider-Man - more of a throwback to the weirdness of the Ditko era than the Romita-style art we'd mostly seen since that run. The one or two Moon-Knight solo stories he drew gave a hint of the kind of thing he might have come up with in that scenario, though of course MK was a very different character to Spider-Man.
