Looking at the last two issues, I'm a little sad that Marie Severin only colored the first one. The colors have stuck with that fun technicolor look but the contrasts aren't nearly as good as they were in the first.

As noted in my review, some of the colouring choices that Leialoha made in issue #3 are a bit bizarre and don't work that well. Marie Severin did colour the Star Wars strip in Pizzazz magazine though, which I'll be starting to review after issue #4. |

As noted in my review, some of the colouring choices that Leialoha made in issue #3 are a bit bizarre and don't work that well. The art is definitely all over the map in this issue. The panel where Tarkin says "You are fat too trusting." is great. I agree that the Luke training scene was well done as was the Falcon's approach to the Death Star. The last page is quite rough though and I thought the "molten lava shooting blaster fire" was a bit overdone in spots.

Based almost entirely on this thread, my six year old and I have decided to make the Marvel Star Wars run the very first comic series that we're going to collect and read together  If you're going the collected route, the Dark Horse Omnibus editions are a little smaller than the regular sized comics. This might be helpful to those with smaller hands. Star Wars: Long Time Ago Volume 1 is issues 1-27 and goes for $24.99 suggested retail. |

This might be helpful to those with smaller hands. Star Wars: Long Time Ago Volume 1 is issues 1-27 and goes for $24.99 suggested retail. My father gave me his collection, so I have all the single issues but I also have the omnibuses and I'm currently using those to read along. While hunting for the back issues can be fun, I'd suggest the omnibuses as well as they very faithfully reproduce the original issues(minus the awesome hostess shorts) so you and your little one wouldn't be missing much Shax. |

The art is definitely all over the map in this issue. The panel where Tarkin says "You are fat too trusting." is great. Yes, and it actually looks a fair bit like Peter Cushing too. There are another two nice close up face panels in issue #3 -- it's almost like a feature of the issue. The first is of Obi-Wan, in the panel where Kenobi says, "I don't think there is any way you boys can help in this. I must go alone.", and the other is of Leia, where she says, "Ben Kenobi? Where is he? Obi-Wan!!" There's definitely more than a touch of Alec Guiness and Carrie Fisher in those panels too. I thought the "molten lava shooting blaster fire" was a bit overdone in spots. Oh, it is overdone, insofar as it's really different to the sleek red laser bolts seen in the film, but personally I kinda like it. It makes the blasters look quite threatening at times, almost as if they're spewing out so much energy that they could be as dangerous to the person firing them as the target. |

I'd "third" the recommendation for the Dark Horse A Long Time Ago... Volume 1 omnibus, shax. I don't own these myself, but I have browsed them in my LCS and I was impressed at how faithful the colouring is to the originals. Certainly it's a lot better than the nasty recolouring in the forthcoming Marvel Star Wars Omnibus. |

I first read these in the tabloid reprint editions. I don't remember exactly when I got them...or where. I know it wasn't one of my normal comic buying stores. I feel like I got them together at a department store. I also hadn't seen Star Wars. My family didn't go to a lot of movies. And at 9 1/2 when it came out its not like I was going to get to the movie on my own.
As a result, I'm not a Star Wars nut. I like Star Wars and Empire. Beyond that I'm fairly ambivalent. However, my son Nathan went through a major Start Ways phase so I've seen the films many times.
Reading issue #1 I'll agree that Chaykin's art is scratchy. But it's incredibly dynamic. It's interesting to see the things in the script that Thomas used as opposed to the finished film. The Biggs sub-plot drags. It's interesting that R2 and C3PO are referred to early on as robots...then suddenly as droids.
Leia getting hit by the "stun" setting looks painful and dangerous.
Vader is cool looking...but doesn't really come across as super imposing.
The power of the cosmic force will fetch you coffee.

Blimey! That's amazing...and extremely flattering. I'm so happy to have, in some small way, provided the inspiration for you to both share such a nice thing together. That's lovely. Oh, it doesn't stop there. Don't think for a second that I won't use this as my gateway for getting her to post at the CCF  Way to go, dad! I never had much luck in getting my boys interested in comics, so I wish you better luck! |

A few thoughts on Star Wars #2.
Art is definitely improved. But I certainly still see Chaykin in there. The layout is obviously Chaykin. The spaceship battles are Chaykin. That final 2/3 page panel showing the jump to hyper-space is Pure Chaykin.
Luke screams for Aunt Beru and Uncle Ben! Apparently the stormtroopers were hard on the rice supply.
Han shot first.
It freaked me out when I finally saw Jabba and he looked nothing like he did in this comic.
