Slow October for me.. too many road trips... I mostly brought prose with me (I don't like to bring single comics on trips, and I'm trying to stick to not buy more stuff until I catch up more on what I have).

November should be better

This remains my worst year yet for reading, but I think a lot of that comes from how much more energy I've put into getting reviews done. I'll be lucky if I read 500 books by the end of the year, and while I don't care too much about the numbers themselves, the less I read, the less truly GREAT comics I read, and I'm feeling that absence.

So my monthly list was getting unwieldy and not useful to find what I read, where I left off on certain titles etc., and for long term reference I prefer a full alphabetical list, so I rejiggered the list into a yearly one (I kept the monthly in a doc as a reference though). No real lowlights, a few stinkers among the miscellaneous issues I have from 1970-71 I read, but nothing stand out bad.

90 books last month, although my reading was really inconsistent. I started out strong reading some Thor back issues, then did nothing for about two weeks in the middle except keep up with my weekly pull list, and then hammered out about 50 books the week around Thanksgiving. The big win for me was that I surpassed 1,000 books read for the year over this past weekend, so I can be a bit more leisurely this month instead of making a mad dash to the finish to meet my goal.

Nothing stood out as either exceptionally good or painfully bad. The Thor issues I read (419-474) weren't the best, but some of the DeFalco/Frenz work was decent. After they left, writing was left to Ron Marz and then Roy Thomas, neither of whom were bad but just not good, and art was handled by Bruce Zick (not good at all) and M.C. Wyman (better than Zick, but not on Frenz's level).

I also read the 2-year-lasting Thunderstrike series, which was done by DeFalco and Frenz as well. It was OK, but they fell into the trap of the 1990's secondary books, where they used relied on other series' supporting characters and villains, their attempts to create new supporting characters and villains fell flat, and they had too many guest stars to try to goose sales.

I might resemble that remark.
