Though we already have a thread for discussing classic films, this is a place where we choose a theme each month and watch and comment on films surrounding that theme. Essentially, the club works as follows: 1) Each month, a theme is chosen (ex. "Sci-fi," "gangland/mafia," "film franchises of the 1980s") 2) Please reserve a post in this thread where you will continue to update your list of viewed films that fit the theme of the month (much like we do for the Classic Comic Books Club). 3) Whoever gets the most "into the spirit" by watching the most films that meet the theme's criteria gets to choose the next month's theme. 4) As this is a "classic" film club, we're looking at films that had a theatrical release date prior to January 1st, 2005. 5) While you're certainly welcome to watch television shows, they do not count towards your list. 6) Films under a 60 minute run-time also do not count towards your list 7) No person may choose the theme for two months in a row. If the person who chose the month's theme watches the most films for that month, the person with the second most films will choose the theme for the next month. 8) Whoever watches the most films in September must choose a horror related theme for October. The Previous Year's Film Club: 2014________________________________________________________________________________ PREVIOUS THEMES: October 2014: Horror November 2014: Noir December 2014: Space Travel, and Travelers from Space January 2015: Superhero Movies February 2015: Movie Serials March 2015: Anime April 2015: Martial Arts May 2015: Westerns June 2015: Civilization no more! I'll chime in if and when I have something to say. Like I did with noir.
I just have very little time to watch movies.

Finally watched my first film tonight: Trial of the Incredible Hulk from 1989. The last time I saw this film was when it first aired on television. I was nine at the time and, while deeply interested in superheroes, knew very little about the ones who weren't on television and so was instantly enamored with Daredevil as presented in that film. In hindsight, it's a pretty lousy film on multiple levels, but it was a great nostalgia trip all the same.

This one was a new one for me
The Phantom 1943, Columbia Pictures 15 chapters
Having grown up spending summers with my grandparents I'm a huge fan of film serials as my grandfather had a huge collection of them that he either taped from TCM or in the case of Flash Gordon he actually owned a set of the actual film reels which he'd play on this ancient projector. Sparing us the waiting he had to get through as a kid he'd let my brother and I watch one chapter a night instead of having to wait a whole week between showings like he once did, and even that long of a wait proved too much for us with certain cliff hangers but he'd never relent...and I'm glad he never did as the wait made it more special.
Though he had a lot of favorites ranging from Dick Tracy and the Shadow to Flash Gordon his favorite was always the Phantom but he always lamented that it was lost to time and he unfortunately passed away before it was found, and it was only just recently that I found out about its retrieval as well and I'm glad I did, not only so that I can remember the fun I had with my Grandfather but because it really is one of the better serials I've seen. Though the production values are no where near pictures like Flash Gordon(but then few serials were) they were still able to get not only a very realistic look but one that was very true to the comic as well; faithfully reproducing the costume right down to the belt and ring creating a much better finished product than the Batman suit.
Fans of the Phantom may find a few inconsistencies, such as the Phantom's identity being Geoffrey Prescott instead of Kit Walker but the reason is pretty obvious as at the time of the film's production the name Kit hadn't been introduced yet which makes this film an interesting bit of trivia in Phantom lore. And of course there are the usual Hollywood errors of era like setting the film in Africa but featuring Macaws, and people who look and sound like Native Americans rather than African tribesmen, but you just sort of have to over look those kinds of errors.

I was considering breaking out both Batman serials, but wasn't sure whether they met Chris' criteria for the month. Still hope to get my hands on the Captain Marvel serial one day.

I was considering breaking out both Batman serials, but wasn't sure whether they met Chris' criteria for the month. Still hope to get my hands on the Captain Marvel serial one day. I've heard that one was really good but I haven't seen it either, I've rarely liked Columbia's serials but after watching their Phantom I'm convinced they must have made some gems so I may need to do some more research. It's funny you mention Captain Marvel actually as Tom Tyler, who played the Phantom, was also Captain Marvel. I like 1949's Batman and Robin(also by Columbia), but I've never really cared for the 1939 Batman though I liked the ending with the crocodiles. Still, all in all I think the serials are some of my favorite superhero movies, and not just because of the nostalgia, I think the energy these early films really captures what I love about superhero comics much better than even the modern films. That's not to say I haven't enjoyed the slew of superhero movies we've been given in the last 15 years, it's just that these older films have more of the simplicity that I often enjoy.

As much as I love Flash Gordon, and indeed find his serials to be some of the best ever made, my favorite film hero from my time spent with my Grandfather was always Tarzan. And so, I declare today as Tarzan day. He may not be traditionally labeled as a superhero but he does look after and defend the jungle he calls home from all evil doers like a superhero and he possesses the superhuman ability to talk to apes and occasionally other jungle animals so I'm counting him. I started off with the original 1918 Tarzan of the Apes starring Elmo Lincoln as the the Lord of the Apes whom my Grandfather always said was related to Abraham Lincoln though google does not confirm this. It's a fun silent film, though not as good as the later films starring Johnny Weissmuller as Tarzan, but is none the less a very faithful adaptation of the novel by Burroughs, but my favorite parts have always been, and were even in this viewing, the excellent stock animal footage. I don't know where they got it all from but it's seriously some of the best nature photography I've seen.
