Watched Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed this morning...probably the best Frankenstein film in the Hammer film series beautifully shot by Terence Fisher and starring the always reliable Peter Cushing...with by far his most ruthless take on the character. Tonight: Brides of Dracula. I'm curious what are your thoughts on Brides of Dracula - care to share? ... I'm always wonder what other opinions about this movie.

I think it's a brilliant movie...definitely in my Top 10 of Hammer Films. One of Cushings best performances...I could be biased though because I love him in anything that he is in. It's my favorite vampire film that doesn't star Christopher Lee. In some ways I think it's better than Horror of Dracula. David Peel is great. One of my favorite scenes is when Cushing and Peel first face off and Cushing has to purge the vampire bite with the red hot poker. Simply amazing movie.

I go back and forth on whether I prefer Brides or Horror. At this point, Horror wins simply because of Peter Cushing running across that table and leaping for the curtain. But Brides does atmosphere so much better.

Cooper and Shax, thanks for sharing your views on the Brides of Dracula. To me, it's stylish, and I agree with you on the atmosphere part Shax and I also agreed with you Cooper because it's one of Peter Cushing's better works.

Captain Clegg? Another Hammer Film with another excellent Cushing performance. It's less known but excellent notheless. Stars a young Oliver Reed and character actor Michael Ripper. Recommended if you haven't.

Oliver Reed was superb and Cushing has never failed me yet!

I may try to get into the Hammer Frankenstein series again this month. I've watched the first film twice and the second one once, but I never really got into them the way I did the Dracula series. I've never seen the Mummy films either.

Some classic horror films I enjoy:
Psycho (1960): to this day, Psycho freaks me out. When I was younger, I didn't appreciate it (I was used to much more gore) but as an adult it is one of the most frightening films. Poor Marion, checking into Bates Motel.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974): Unrelenting horror, the screaming, the sound of the chainsaw, the grainy film....very unsettling.
Blood and Black Lace (1964): One of Mario Bava's best in my opinion. A great, stylish giallo thriller from the early 60s.
Dracula (1958): with Christopher Lee. Atmospheric, creepy, elegant, and he is downright scary!
The Mummy (1959) again with Christopher Lee. The scene that stands out to me is when he bursts through a door or maybe it's a window...but there he is lumbering, towering, and terrifying! I read that he actually dislocated his shoulder filming that scene, but it looked so good they left it in.
The Exorcist (1973): I can't watch this one anymore. It freaks me out too much, haha!
The Amityville Horror (1979): haunted house, demon possessed house, whichever it is, it is very scary!
Cat People (1942) that pool scene always gives me the willies!

I've never seen the Mummy films either. What! I highly recommended the first Mummy movie with Cushing and Lee...the rest...not so much. I do like Blood From the Mummy's Tomb though it does not have an actual mummy. Instead it has the delectable Valerie Leon in the title role. It can be a little disjointed at times because the director Seth Holt died before filming was completed. It was finished by Michael Carreras...not a very talented filmmaker IMHO. I enjoy the Frankenstein series a little more than I do the Dracula movies...Christopher Lee always does a great job but after Horror and Prince of Darkness I think the scripts aren't very good compared to the first 2. I love all the Frankenstein films with Cushing except maybe the 3rd one. It was the only one not directed by Terence Fisher who broke a leg before filming. It's directd by Freddie Francis who is an excellent cinematographer...so at least it looks good. Have you ever seen Twins of Evil with Cushing? It's about twin female vampires Definitly one of his most powerful performances and most ruthless I'd say. Filmed not long after his wife died so he's kind of gaunt looking which started when he died and never really recovered.

Twins of Evil: I think it's on my DVR and I haven't watched it. I believe the Collinson Twins, who were Playboy's first twin playmates, are in it? From 1970 or 71 I think.
Blood from the Mummy's Tomb: I believe I've seen that one. Is that the one where the girl is the reincarnation of an Egyptian queen? She was really pretty too.

Twins of Evil is from 1972 and does star the Collinson twins. Yes you are correct about Blood From the Mummys Tomb...it's based on Jewel of the Seven Stars by Bram Stoker. Valerie Leon was definitely pretty too as stated.

This is one of my favorites and I was stunned by the visual imagery and the Collinson twins played their parts just beautifully to extent of their lavish costumes; and it's has a great gothic feel and I thoroughly enjoyed this film when I first saw this film in 1981. Another Hammer Classic of one girl evil and another good!

They have done an excellent job the last few years of releasing Hammer films on quality bluray...at least a half dozen or so. Seek then out if you haven't.
