From the DC Comics blog: First Look: Melissa Benoist as Supergirl By Tim BeedleFriday, March 6th, 2015 Share Some days are good. A few are great. But we’re going to go so far as to call this one super. Why? Because we’ve just been given our first look at our new small screen Supergirl. That’s Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El, in what’s the first image to be released from Supergirl, the new pilot from Warner Bros. Television and based on the characters from DC Comics. Supergirl’s pilot episode is currently in production for CBS and also stars Mehcad Brooks (Jimmy Olsen), Calista Flockhart (Cat Grant), Chyler Leigh (Alexandra “Alex” Danvers), David Harewood (Hank Henshaw), Faran Tahir (The Commander), Dean Cain and Helen Slater (both in unspecified roles). The costume for Supergirl was designed by three-time Oscar® winner Colleen Atwood, who also designed the costumes for The Flash and Arrow and whose motion picture credits include Academy Awards® for her work on Alice in Wonderland, Memoirs of a Geisha and Chicago, as well as eight additional Oscar® nominations for films such as Into the Woods, Snow White and the Huntsman, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Sleepy Hollow, among others. Colleen Atwood said, “In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today.” The Supergirl pilot is from executive producers/writers Greg Berlanti, Ali Adler and Andrew Kreisberg. Sarah Schechter is also executive producing, with Glen Winter directing. Based on the characters from DC Comics, Supergirl is produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. So what do you all think? Share your thoughts below, Kryptonians! (Okay, humans too.)

First of all - She no Laura Vandervoot and certainly no Helen Slater - sad to say that this actress is too plain Jane to me and I'm very disappointed in her casting as Supergirl. I was hoping more a Laura and/or Helen because I just can't figure out why they hired her to play the part. I'm baffled by her appearance here and I say the costume is not my liking. I'm very disappointed that the only part of the costume is yellow is her belt here. Laura Vandervoot as Smallville's SupergirlHelen Slater as Supergirl the Movie 1984My first impression of the costume itself - is that Arrow, Flash, and others are definitely far more superior than this one here and having said that I just can't stomach the ugly "S" of Red with a Blue background. I give this design, color, and whole nine yards - a big fat D Minus!

I'm baffled by her appearance here I actually like the idea of having Supergirl with a more ordinary appearance in contrast to the overly sexualized depictions we've seen coming out of DC for the past ten years. I want her to be a hero; not a pin-up girl. I can't say I'm wild about the costume, but it's so hard to judge from one out-of-context picture.

I want her to be a hero; not a pin-up girl. I can't say I'm wild about the costume, but it's so hard to judge from one out-of-context picture. To be honest here, I'm not trying to advocate a pin-up girl type for Supergirl - but looking in the history of Supergirl from the get go to now. I just find this costume and the looks of her not in my satisfaction and I'm a bit harsh of the costume design because there is hardly any yellow except her belts. The whole scheme of things with Red being the dominant color is all wrong here. I just can't stomach her insignia being only Red and Blue and I'm sorry being so negative about this - but looking at the Superhero Costumes of the day - Arrow, Flash, and others are far more superior than this concept. I'm may be in the minority here shaxper; but I find this picture is all wrong and the idea of wearing red pantyhose is very odd indeed and I'm having a hard time accepting it. Based on the grade from D Minus - I give her a grade of C Minus because I was a little bit too harsh on it. I just can't understand why I'm the only one here being so negative about it because I'm a traditionalist and I just can't stand the modern days costumes of Superheroes being shown on Television and Movies because they just don't cut it for me. I'm going to try to keep an open mind of this - but I just having so many issues of Costumes these days of not being colorful enough to be more heroic in mind.

I, too, like that she just looks like a regular girl.

I was actually rather surprised that they chose to go with a rather traditional look (i.e., a skirt) for Supergirl. I was expecting some type of bodysuit or some other look that was intended to make her look more "realistic". I'm not too wild on the dark colors either, and I wish DC would really get over that trend. But realistically I knew they weren't going to give her a bright look either, so I guess this is as good as it can get. I give the suit a B-.
Now having said that, I thought the Flash's suit from the current TV show was underwhelming when it was first revealed, and even after seeing it in action I'm not too thrilled with it. But it hasn't hurt my enjoyment of the show in the least. So as long as the TV show is written well and has good performance, the suit's look will be secondary to me.

I'm actually surprised how faithful the costume is to the classic Supergirl costume. If the colors were lighter and the tights were removed, it would be damn near perfect.

I have never been a Supergirl fan. However, I love the plain Jane look, and I actually like the dark palette costume. I will give this series a chance.

Something I have come to realize about myself in the past year:
Like many comics fans, I tend to be very conservative about my super-heroes. This makes it very difficult to welcome new concepts for my beloved characters from DC Comics.
I am already very conservative in politics.
I am unashamedly ultra-conservative in religious matters.
Maybe I should just be conservative in matters that affect real life, such as religion and politics. I don't have to be so conservative with entertainment. I find that I am enjoying my comics and comics-based tv shows and movies so much more since I let loose a little in the comics standards.
By welcoming the Arrow and Flash television shows I can enjoy my comics and some new takes on the characters too.
There is a big possibility that this version of Supergirl will be my favorite. I hope everyone else here will enjoy it too, even if it does not strictly follow the traditional comics "look" or story lines.

Maybe I should just be conservative in matters that affect real life ...but reality has a liberal bias...
