I have never, ever heard of Moon Girl in my lifetime. Sounds Interesting Farrar! Mecha, from what I understand Moon Girl was EC's attempt at a mythologically-inspired Wonder Woman-type character. She was hardly as enduring as WW and if her name is remembered today by classic comic book aficianados, it's probably due to that ever-morphing title. Changing the title of an existing comic happened elsewhere too, and Phil Maurice gave a great explanation of the reasons publishers would do this. Have to admit I still crack up every time I come across a mention of that "A Moon, A Girl...Romance" iteration.

Aside: love the various titles/genres for this comic series: Moon Girl and the Prince; Moon Girl; Moon Girl Fights Crime! and especially A Moon, A Girl...Romance. This situation arose from publisher Bill Gaines' efforts to avoid ponying up the fees for second-class postal permits every time he started a new title. Instead, he would tweak an existing title and shift it into a new genre, but retain just enough that he could argue it was a continuation of the same book. This led to some very confusing numbering for many of the EC books, as well as the hilarious evolution of Moon Girl from Adventure to Crime to Romance. Great pick, Farrar! Thanks, Phil Maurice! Oh, those publishers--they never missed a trick, did they? :DWell, it was a business and naturally they were concerned about the bottom line, so I guess it's to be expected. The Moon Girl one was just so egregious. Another incongruous (and funny) change was when the Captain America book was renamed Captain America's Weird Tales for a couple of issues.

I hope Prince Hal will forgive me for riding on the shoulders of his glorious choice, but I too thought to go with King Kong as soon as I discovered the great theme of this weeks contest. I haven't been to classiccomics in days and see what I've been missing! So Hal went with Kong's stunning appearance in the pages of Western (I love that cover so much I have both the the treasury and giant-size edition), but I want to throw my cards in with the efforts of the great Bill Stout and one of the covers he put together for Fantagraphics 1991 King Kong series. Stout is a brilliant illustrator in the comics and fantasy field who specializes in dinosaur drawing. Following in the line of the great dino artist Charles Knight, but channeling Williamson and Frazetta, Stout did precious little interior comic book work, but makes up for it in his stunning and exciting covers. His work reminds of Mark Schultz and Dave Stevens, and I figure he deserves a mention on this board. Why Kong? I defer to the sage words of our pal Prince Hal in this regard, but I'll just add that King Kong is one of those archetypal characters that if he didn't exist we would have to invent him. Kong is us. We both fear him and long to be him. Kong is the road not taken on man's evolutionary journey from the jungle to the city. Much like Tarzan, but magnified a thousand fold, King Kong is our bestial nature, ferocious but vital, primal and all potent. Kong is not villain, and he is not evil. King Kong is the final expression of man's most secret dreams, even in an age of smart phones and pretend omniscience.

I could just as easily have picked 3 0r 4 of the other entries here, but have chosen to go with one of my favourite characters ever, the Oh-So-Cool Johnny Alpha, Strontium Dog. First published in the short lived Star-Lord, then subsumed into big brother 2000AD, Alpha and trusted sidekicks Wulf Sternhammer and the Gronk adventured through space and time, with plenty of der laffings, and liberal use of der happy stick. Art on the first 10 years or so, and the latter 10 or so(wild guess there) by the incredible Carlos Ezquerra(co-creator of Judge Dredd), IMHO the most under-appreciated artist in comics.

This is a tough one, because the question was around a character, not a series or book. So this is a vote specifically for Maggie Chascarrillo, not the title. Possibly my favorite character in a series filled with great characters, with a consistent, realistic personality despite stories (that range from incredibly realistic to totally fantastic).

I grew up on Harvey comics and Hot Stuff was my favorite.

Which makes my cover the worst pick in contest-history, unless my favourite character is a shoe or an old 45. (edit:) looked again - forgot one of the photographs among the clutter was a picture of Maggie and Hopey - saved!

It's the 31st where I am, so since I might not have much computer access tomorrow, I'm going to go ahead and start the voting. A lot of great, iconic covers, but my votes goes to DubipR.

Tough call this week, trying to focus on the covers themselves and not the properties/characters they represent. Lots of great choices, but I hav ealways loved that Airboy cover so Jesse412 gets the nod barely.

Going strictly by which cover I liked best, I'll cast my vote for Farrar and the mansel in distress.

Scott Harris, for a cover that most definitely makes me want to buy it.
As always, some close seconds, especially mrp's.
