The Javelin flew swiftly over the Atlantic Ocean, bearing within it certain members of the Titans of Justice.
Junjie Quick was piloting the craft, and after locking in their course, he glanced backward. “Cel, I can’t believe you left Thunderstorm at the Hall of Justice alone,” he commented.
“Not to worry,” assured Celsius. “I set her security clearance at level five which is the same level that Wendy and Marvin had when they were junior Super Friends.” He smiled in amusement, but only shortly. “At that level, she doesn’t have access to the classified files that contain such things as our secret identities and weaknesses.”
“Thank God!” huffed Sargona. “The last thing I need is for Thunderdog to be lurking in the bushes outside my condo.” She sneered in derision. “She probably doesn’t even bring her own pooper scooper.”
“Guys – let’s give Thunderdo… I mean ThunderSTORM a chance!” pleaded Celsius. “She was forced into this situation just as much as she was forced on us.”
“But she defends that cow Waller!” countered Sargona with an elevation to her voice. “She’s a walking video camera.”
“I’d have to agree, Celsius,” said Junjie Quick. “While we don’t know her at all, being associated with Amanda Waller can mean nothing but headaches to come. Still, if you insist, I’ll try to be… um… more welcoming to her.”
“Power Guy?” said Celsius to his silent teammate. “You’re not saying anything.”
“What’s there to say?” replied Power Guy as he walked away from the others towards the back of the Javelin.
“Moving on…” said Celsius. “We need to focus on the more important issue at hand. The Extremists are back and God only knows how that happened again, and they have three nuclear missiles. They’ve pulled this stunt before and luckily the Justice League Europe was able to stop them. We all know that we have nowhere near the experience they had at the time they faced the Extremists so this is not going to be a walk in the park.”
Celsius was interrupted by a transmission coming in on the Javelin’s radio. “Come in Javelin. This is Strato Hawk.”
They were all glad to recognize their compatriot’s voice. Celsius put on an extra headset and switched the receiver on. “This is Celsius,” he broadcast. “Go ahead buddy.”
“I heard about the situation with the Extremists,” Strato Hawk’s voice said over the transceiver. “Nightvision and I are wrapping up things with Dr. Phosphorus so we’re a bit tied up right now but I called a friend into help us.”
“Who’s that?” questioned Celsius.
“His name is Nucleus,” responded Strato Hawk. “He’s Ray Palmer’s protégé. He and I have known each other for a few years. He’s a great guy and he’s good with the science stuff like Dr. Palmer is. I asked him to head over to the Hall and try and pinpoint where the missiles would hit if launched. Who’s on monitor duty?”
“Umm… Thunderstorm is,” said Celsius with a bit of hesitation.
“Black Lightning’s daughter?” asked Strato Hawk.
“Yup,” confirmed Celsius with a bit of disappointment in his tone.
“When did she join the group… and why don’t you sound too happy about it?” questioned Strato Hawk.
“Long story. I’ll fill you in later,” replied Celsius. “Tell your buddy Nucleus to head on over to the Hall. I’ll let Thunderstorm know that he’s coming. Good luck with Phosphorus.”
“Thanks pal. See you later.” With a click, the transmission was closed. Celsius then contacted the Hall of Justice on the same transciever. “Thunderstorm – it’s Celsius, do you read me?” He paused, then repeated his request.
About a minute later, a voice came from the Javelin’s speakers “This is Thunderstorm. What is it?”
“Strato Hawk asked a fellow named Nucleus to help us out with the Extremist situation,” replied Celsius. “He’s on his way over to the Hall now. When he gets there, he’s going to try and pinpoint where the missiles would hit once they are launched. Make sure he gets everything he needs.”
“Sure. Not a problem,” assured Thunderstorm cheerfully. Celsius could tell she was doing her best to be accommodating, and try to fit in.
“Thanks,” he said graciously. “I appreciate it.”
Sargona then grabbed the microphone from Celsius and yelled into it “And make sure you stay out of our rooms while we’re gone. THANK YOU!” She abruptly switched off the microphone before Celsius could utter an apology.
“That wasn’t necessary,” he commented dryly.
“Sure it was,” countered Sargona. “I don’t want Thunderdog knowing that I lied about what kind of underwear that I wear.”
Power Guy raised his eyebrows in interest, but said nothing.
“I’m not even going to ask…” sighed Celsius as he shook his head. He switched the microphone back on and held it to his mouth. “Icemanling – pick up.”
Some moments later he received a response. “Celsius! What’s going on? Any news on the Extremists situation?”
“A little but not much,” was the reply. “Strato Hawk has his friend Nucleus, the Atom’s protégé, heading over to the Hall to use our equipment to try and figure out where the missiles would hit if they get launched. We’ll keep you posted so you can evacuate whatever location the missile would hit. Can you contact Vibe and ask him to do the same thing in America?”
“Sure.” There was a short pause, as if Icemanling was considering their options. “I’m not about to let anyone die on my watch if I can help it. On the lighter side, I have something that should perk you up. Remember that old Pop band the Sugababes? They had a reunion concert in London last night that I went to and guess what?”
“What?” asked Celsius impatiently, annoyed by the segue way.
“When they sang ‘Red Dress’, they dedicated it to YOU!” revealed Icemanling, laughing nervouslyy.
“No way!!!” exclaimed Celsius in a state of shock.
“Yes way,” confirmed Icemanling. “I guess they like your costume. They said you were the most fashionable super-hero on the planet.” He snickered, and added in a low voice, “You may not want to share this with Wonder Man.”
“I love those girls. I have a bunch of their CDs at home,” said Celsius. His smile faded and he realized they were wasting time. “Back to business. I’d suggest that you make your way to the most central point in Europe so that if the Extremists launch the missiles, hopefully you’ll be closer to wherever the missile would hit so that you can evacuate the area. The missiles are about thirty years old and at the time that Khandaq put them together, their technology was pretty primitive so they travel pretty slowly compared to other missiles, from what I’ve been told by the U.N.”
“But why would Black Adam even have nuclear missiles with all the power at his disposal?” questioned Icemanling.
“Black Adam isn’t the one who had the missiles manufactured. It was the ruler before him. He was a paranoid tyrant.”
“That makes sense,” concluded Icemanling. “Okay, I’m heading out. Keep me posted.”
“Sure thing,” finished Celsius, and ended the transmission with the flip of a switch.
As they had been talking, Power Guy returned to the front of the Javelin. Once back up by his teammates and asked, “How soon until we’re in Khandaq?”
“About five minutes,” answered Junjie Quick. “I wanted to get us there sooner but there’s been a lot of turbulence.”
“I felt none,” commented Celsius.
“I took care of that,” added Sargona. “I can’t STAND turbulence. I leveled out the flight so no one could feel it.”
“Guys and girl, when we get to Khandaq, we need to stay alert,” directed Celsius. “From what I’ve learned about the Extremists, they’re a bloodthirsty lot who would have no problem destroying the entire world to get what they want. The good thing is: it should be four against four. Their old leader Dreamslayer was trapped in another dimension by the Silver Sorceress years ago.”
“Aren’t the Extremists just a bunch of robots?” asked Sargona.
“There has been some debate about them being robots so let’s make sure we don’t use lethal force until we’re sure of what we’re dealing with. We don’t want another situation like Jemstone’s,” replied Celsius.
“He’s is right,” confirmed Junjie Quick. “As we’ve been traveling, I’ve been looking over the Extremists’ file on the Javelin’s computer. It looks like some of them were robots while others were human.” Junjie checked his gauges and adjusted their course slightly. “Oh guys, we’re entering Khandaq. The nuclear facility that the Extremists are holed up in is only a few minutes here according to the computer. I’m going to land the Javelin and we can walk the rest of the way so that we don’t catch their attention with a huge jet flying over their heads.”
“Good call Junjie,” commented Celsius as he strapped himself into his seat. The others prepared for the landing as well.
Within minutes, the Javelin came in for a near perfect landing. The four exited the jet and proceeded walking towards the hijacked nuclear facility. As they got closer to the facility and the building became visible, they noticed that all of the doors and windows were blocked by large pieces of metal, most of which looked like they were torn off of other buildings or vehicles in the area.
“The doors and windows are blocked!” commented Sargona with a bit frustration.
“This is obviously Dr. Diehard’s doing,” deduced Junjie Quick.
“Not a problem,” assumed Power Guy as he approached the door closest to the group and tried to punch his way through the metal blocking it. Power Guy slammed his fist into the metal but instead of his fist going right through it as planned, it just dented the metal inward and then surprisingly, morphed back into the shape it was before Power Guy had punched it. “What the heck???” he exclaimed. “That punch should have made a hole big enough for us to walk through.”
“Dr. Diehard is certainly doing his best to keep trespassers out,” huffed Celsius. “We might as well have just announced our presence,” he added. “What with the noise you just made.”
“Yeah, PG. Thanks. Let me try,” said Sargona as she approached the door and put her hand on the large piece of metal blocking the door. She ordered it to fly away from the entryway. It did move out of the way but instead of falling to the side of Sargona and her teammates, it wrapped itself around Sargona, immobilizing her. “Help!” she yelled.
“Hang on, I’ll get you out!” said Power Guy. He attempted to free Sargona but before he could act, another piece of metal from the building broke off and wrapped itself around him as well. Seconds later, another piece of metal did the same thing. Then another and another. Soon, Power Guy was completely incased in the scraps of metal that had been covering the doors and windows to the nuclear facility. The more he struggled to get free, the more pieces metal wrapped around him.
Celsius and Junjie Quick were quick to respond. Celsius made his way over to Sargona and was about to freeze the metal surrounding her but soon found himself wrapped with the strange flying metal.
Junjie Quick raced over to Power Guy and started punching the metal surrounding him several hundred times at super-speed. He seemed to be making progress until the metal he was punching started to turn almost fluid, taking the shape of his hand and then flowing up his arm to encase him like the three other heroes.
“I’ve got to get out of here and help the others,” Celsius thought to himself. He turned up his core temperature to one thousand degrees. He became so hot that his body started smoking. Soon the metal surrounding him melted into a pool below him. He then cooled himself down to the normal ninety-eight point five degrees and raced over to Sargona. Lifting his hand, he covered his team in a dome of 10-foot thick solid ice to keep more metal from entrapping his teammates. Flying metal started banging against the dome but Celsius kept it from distracting him. He then fired a cold blast at the metal surrounding Sargona and covered it in frigid ice. He then punched the metal, which had become brittle from the cold, and Sargona was free.
“Thanks,” said the grateful Sargona. “That kind of freaked me out. I felt like a plate of pigs in a blanket.”
“No problem,” assured Celsius. “Let’s free the others. I’ve got Junjie. You get PG.”
“I’m on it.” confirmed Sargona. She walked over to Power Guy and tried to reassure the blonde powerhouse “I’ll have you free in a few seconds. Hold still.” She placed her hands on the metal and had it disperse itself from Power Guy’s body.
“Many thanks Sargona.” Power Guy said with a look of relief on is face.
In the meantime, Celsius had made his way over to Junjie Quick and freed him much like he had freed Sargona. Once done, he turned to Sargona and Power Guy and said, “We’re going in. Get behind me but don’t stand too close.” He then extended his ice-dome to one of the entry-ways to the nuclear facility.
“What are you going to do?” questioned Sargona with a puzzled look on her face.
“Watch!” replied Celsius as he turned up the fire on one of his hands and the frigid cold on his other hand. He then slammed his two hands together causing a huge burst of pressurized steam and focused it on the entry-way before them—which had been re-covered by metal during the heroes’ attempt to free themselves. The steam burst open the metal, dissolving it down into a fluid-like sludge. The entry way was finally clear.
“Let’s move!” ordered Celsius.
The four heroes made their way into the building, running through the hallway in front of them. They were about half way to an upcoming room when they heard what sounded like an explosion, which had caused the building to tremble slightly.
“What’s going on?” Sargona asked with an unnerved look on her face.
“Diehard is probably attaching more metal to doors and windows,” guessed Power Guy.
The heroes continued towards the room ahead of them. It had no door on it so the heroes stepped right in.
“Welcome fools!” came a voice from above them.
The heroes looked up and saw the four Extremists:
along with another figure:
whose identity was mystery to them, standing up on a ledge above them.
Lord Havok, looking down on the heroes, wore a malicious grin on his face. “Your trespass has sealed this world’s fate. The missiles have been launched! Hahahahahahahahaha!!!” he cackled.
To be continued…
