Outer Space: Near the Planet Earth

Aboard a speeding green space vehicle, members of the Justice League of America communicate to loved-ones via green cell-phones.

“Roy! I need you to do something for me…” said Green Arrow.

At the pilot’s station another hero said in a military tone, “This is Green Lantern 2814.1 to Green Lantern 2815.1: Come in Katma Tui”

“…forget the game, Di Di, this is serious!” said an exasperated Black Canary on a phone identical to the one her husband was holding.

“…his family had no idea. They were traumatized by our mission and are reeling after finding out that their husband and father is really Sinestro! Their house has sustained heavy damages. They will need temporary shelter and counselors…” reported Green Lantern.

“…and take her to the old Arrow Cave…

…YES, I know its long been abandoned; that’s exactly why I want you to take her there!” shouted Green Arrow.

“Di Di, I know you are scared, but please keep calm and alert. This is an emergency, but your father will be right there with you soon. Can I speak with Robert for a second?

… Coast City!?! What’s he doing there?

…nevermind…and don’t worry: I’m going to go find him…” said Black Canary trying to resist the temptation to break down in panic.

Speaking though a third green cell phone created by his power ring, Hal Jordan said, “Carol, we have to talk…”

“Thanks, Roy…you’ve always been there for me when it really counts…” said Green Arrow quietly.

As the spaceship entered into the earth’s atmosphere Green Lantern broke into a cold sweat as he tried to reassure his wife, “…don’t worry, honey, we’ve been through a lot together, and we’ll get through this too…”

“…You’re uncle Roy should be there soon…and don’t hassle him!

…and Di Di? This isn’t going to happen, but just in case…

…if Sinestro shows up, you remember what I taught you about using your Canary Cry, right?

…this IS an emergency!” exclaimed the frustrated heroine, “…with everything you’ve got: Full Force.”

“Yes, I think its best that you just take your vacation leave and go into hiding. Hun? Could you contact my brother Jim and warn him?

…Yes, keep trying to contact Daniel. Don’t worry, I’ll find him. Everything’s going to be okay…

…I promise.” affirmed Green Lantern, “…and Carol…


…I love you.”

Earlier…

In recent years scenic Coast City Park had become famous for its five-mile track that weaved through beautiful forestry and featured a one-mile portion overlooking the majestic Pacific coast. Robert Queen regularly took advantages of the private jet services of his father Oliver to go jogging there with his best friend Daniel Jordan. Usually they scheduled these meetings well in advance to assure the plane was available. Today was different though. From their telephone conversation this morning Robert knew that something was bothering his friend.

“Dan?

…oh, Danny-boy…” Robert said in a sing-songy tease as they ran side-by-side.

“…DAN!”

“huh? Oh, I’m sorry. What were you saying?” said the obviously pre-occupied bald teen.

“We’ve been running for twenty…” Robert said as he checked his watch, “…no, twenty-three minutes, and you haven’t breathed a word.”

“Just concentrating on jogging. I can barely keep up with you, and that’s even with that backpack you’re wearing.” said Daniel evading the topic.

Robert struggled to think of a way to get Daniel to open up as the two jogged for another five minutes. “You know what you need, Dan?” asked Robert. Daniel raised his eyebrow and tilted his head in curiosity. “…a woman!”

Both teens stopped as Daniel burst out into laughter. “Yeah, that’s just what I need: a woman…”

“No, seriously, when is the last time you went out on a date?” asked Robert as they continued walking.

“…uhhhhhmmmmm…I believe that date you are referring to would be sometime in the future.” said Daniel with a grin as he began picking up the pace.

“Why don’t you ask someone out?” persisted Robert as he followed his buddy.

“Don’t know anyone.” said Daniel shortly.

“Oh, come ON!” Robert thought for a few moments about the crush his twin sister had on Daniel since they were eleven. Then against his better judgment he asked, “How about Di Di?”

Daniel abruptly stopped. “Di Di.”

“Well, yeah.” insisted Robert.

“Your sister. The cheerleader. Who lives on the other side of the United States.” said Daniel in a matter-of-fact way.

“So?” defended Robert.

“Wouldn’t work” stated Daniel, “…besides someone like her wouldn’t go for someone like me anyway.”

Robert bit his lip. He knew very well that if he let the cat out of the bag that he would face the wrath of his sister, and she was getting pretty good at using her “canary cry.” Robert’s attention was then diverted to two men in black following a young woman jogging in the distance.

“Look, uhhh…Dan…There’s something I gotta do.” Robert said excusing himself.

“What?” questioned Daniel.

“uhhh…I gotta use the bathroom. I’ll be right back.” He said as the men closed in on the girl.

“The bathroom is the other way.” snapped Daniel in irritation. He had been thinking about his father’s constant excuses to “ditch him” all day, and now Robert was doing the same thing.

“Look, just let me go.” replied Robert as he ran ahead of his friend with all of his might.

Daniel Jordan wasn’t the type to push issues or fight with friends, but he had been on edge all day. It didn’t occur to him to just let it pass. He followed his friend all the way to a group of trees. As Robert pulled his sweat suit off he noticed Daniel right behind him. He tossed his jogging garments to his friend and donned his mask. “Hold these for me.”

Daniel starred in silent shock as Robert, who was apparently this new vigilante he had been reading about in the newspapers for the past month, removed a collapsible bow from his backpack. With amazing skill and speed Dark Arrow shot two arrows knocking both assailants out cold. The frightened victim got up and ran away without even looking back.

Robert turned around and looked straight at his friend. A great sense of guilt overcame Daniel. “We’ve gotta talk.” said Robert.

Suddenly a huge transparent golden hand grasped the form of Dark Arrow and raised him into the sky.

“There you are!” said an evil sounding alien voice. “I was looking for the famous new "Dark Arrow" in Star City, but my dear friend Brainiac advised me that you were here." A smaller yellow energy hand ripped the mask off of the young hero and tossed it to the ground. Sinestro studied the face of Robert Queen. "So, you are the son of the Green Arrow. First you are going to tell me the names of all of your relatives…

…and then.. I’m going to kill you.”

The demonic looking figure used his power ring to create a circle of fire around the area. Also trapped within this circle of burning trees, Daniel Jordan watched with mounting horror as the yellow fist drew Dark Arrow closer to Sinestro. Suddenly Dark Arrow gave Sinestro an uppercut punch in the nose. Sinestro didn’t even see it coming. The arrowhead in the hero’s hand sliced Sinestro’s left nostril. A thick and sticky purple liquid gushed forth from the alien’s nose.

“WAAAAAAAUGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” he cried as the energy fist dissolved dropping Dark Arrow. Daniel Jordan watched helplessly as his friend plummeted more than forty feet before crashing on the ground with a sickening thud. “ROBERT!” he yelled as he ran toward the still body of his costumed friend.

“Daniel! GET BACK!” ordered another voice from the sky. Daniel turned to see the form of the Green Lantern speeding through the skies toward Sinestro.



Just behind him was the heroine known as the Black Canary riding on a transparent green platform in the sky. The energy platform lowered the beautiful super-heroine to the ground where her son’s body lay.

As Sinestro continued to soar skyward he uttered terrifying shouts of agony. Keeping his eyes on his adversary, Green Lantern raised his voice and asked his Justice League teammate, “Is he okay?”

“He’s still breathing…barely.” replied a slightly shaky voice.

As Daniel drew near his friend, he noted that mascara stained the Black Canary’s face as silent tears trickled down her face. “Aunt Dinah?” he whispered as he picked up his friend’s mask.

Ignoring the young man’s surprise, Black Canary called out to the Lantern, “We have to get him to a hospital…NOW!” A tear trickled down her cheek.

Using his power ring the hero created a green ambulance, after which his emerald beam rewove the costume of the fallen Dark Arrow into a dark green t-shirt and red shorts. “Protect your identities.” he said, offering the Canary a bright green dress.

Black Canary’s attention quickly turned to the sky as an enraged Sinestro plummeted earthward. Suddenly a bright yellow, enormous, circular-shaped saw appeared in the sky and began rotating quickly toward the helpless form of the Dark Arrow.

“LANTERN!” shouted the heroine in panic, “Green Scream!”

Green Lantern knew exactly what she meant. It was Ollie’s idea originally. The three had often discussed battle tactics in emergency situations, but nothing had ever come up to warrant testing the “green scream.”

“Hal…he’s my son! NOW!!!!” demanded Black Canary. Then she planted her feet firmly in the ground, braced herself and took a deep breath. Green Lantern formed a voice amplifier around her neck and created a green funnel in front of her mouth pointing towards the approaching enemy. Black Canary then screamed as she had never screamed before. The amazing force of her amplified scream broke Sinestro’s right arm and sent him spinning heals-over-head into the clouds. His screams of pain could be heard though he was now miles away in the sky. Some of the flames surrounding the heroes were quenched while others were spread. A great fire broke out in the park. Daniel was horrified at the violent scene.

“Go!” ordered Green Lantern as he used his power ring to gently place the unconscious teen in the ambulance. The tearful lady looked briefly at Daniel and drove the emerald ambulance away.

Suddenly a giant green hand whisked Daniel Jordan away. In shock he asked the famous Green Lantern, “What are you doing?”

Failing to answer the hero sped the confused teen inland and away from Coast City. Daniel couldn’t believe the series of events that now had him flying above the California desert. “Where are you taking me?”

“…to the beginning…” answered the mysterious hero. “Daniel…”

“…and how do you know my name?” Daniel interrupted.

“Daniel, I’m sorry…I’m sorry that…I ‘m sorry that it had to be this way” he explained as his mask dissolved revealing the mournful face of Harold Jordan.

“…DAD!?!” exclaimed the teen in disbelief.

“So, Green Arrow isn't the only one who has a son?” said Sinestro with an evil delight as he seemingly appeared out of nowhere.



He looked at young Daniel Jordan with interest. “Who’s his mother? Lex Luthor?” he said mockingly.

“No matter: A bald head won’t stop me from giving him a good hair cut!” he said as a 15 foot pair of yellow barber’s sheers appeared in the sky…

…pointed at the neck of Daniel Jordan.
