Chapter 2 – “Unfinished Business”

The Watchtower…
“Everyone to the control room right away! I could use a hand here! Hurry!”
Dark Arrow could detect the panic in Totem’s voice, but couldn’t figure out what was wrong. He had barely had time to wrap a towel around him and grab his bow and a couple of arrows. He could hear the others’ footsteps, and a couple of splashes told him he wasn’t the only one. They had just finished their last training session for tonight’s raid, and everyone had gone to get a bit of rest before the big event. Totem had gone to the control room to call her mom and let her know things were okay. Of course she had followed Atmosphere as that was where he always went…
Dark Arrow reached the corridor to the Control Room, and dodged just in time to avoid the chair that went flying by. The Sixty Minute Soldier was not so lucky, and Arrow heard a grunt behind him. He looked back, and could tell the others were there too. At least Sixty was okay. The grunt was more of surprise than pain, since he was still riding the formula that gave him his strength. The quick glimpse Dark Arrow had gotten had not been pretty. He had spotted Totem behind a heavy computer bank, so at least he knew she was protected. The room looked as though there was a full-scale F5 tornado in the middle of it. Lights flickered, computers blinked, and sparks of showers went everywhere. Papers flew around everywhere, and he could hear his friend crying.
“Right under their noses… d**n them… could have… should have known…”
With a sinking feeling, Arrow took a guess at what had happened. “What the heck is he doing DA?” he heard Lt. Atom ask behind him. All in various states of undress, the others looked surprised as well. Atmosphere had always been one of the most stable. He was the rock they all leaned on, and for him to lose it like this they knew it was serious. “I’m not sure, but I have my suspicions. Sixty, can you slide me hard enough to get to the doorway?” Sixty eyed the distance, and tried to figure out how hard the wind was coming from inside the room. “I don’t know. Let’s find out.” He grinned as he grabbed Arrow’s towel and slung him along the floor. Arrow reached the door and called out to his friend.
“Al, snap out of it. You’re going to hurt someone. Please, tell me what is going on.” Dark Arrow had to brace himself, as the winds actually got stronger. He had no idea Atmosphere was capable of this level of force.
“You don’t understand Robert! They had her. She was with them all along. RIGHT. UNDER. THEIR. STUPID. NOSES!” He heard his friend sob, and the winds stopped just long enough for him to make a beeline into the room next to Totem.
“Are you alright?” he asked Totem.
“Yes, for now. But it’s not going to be easy. The word has spread. His dad called him right around the time my mom was trying to tell me.”
“What is going on?” Arrow asked.
“Black Orchid. We know now why she’s been so hard to track all these months. She’s been posing as Venus in her off time. Word is spreading like wildfire through the superhero community. When his dad told him, he lost it.”
Dark Arrow was furious, but he needed to calm his friend down first. The winds had picked back up, but this time he was able to ride them back out of the room.
“Well?” Lt. Atom snapped. He was not very patient to begin with, and had become very good friends with Atmosphere. The concern on his face was visible.
“Not yet. I’ll tell everyone together. First we have to get him calmed down. Airwave, I need you to take him out, but we need to go easy. Can you send in sublevel sound waves to put him to sleep? It’ll have to be done gently. I have no idea how he’ll react otherwise.”
Airwave replied, “Sure thing boss, but…”
“Please just do it. No time for long explanations.”
Airwave managed to stand up. Lt. Atom and Sixty stood behind him in case the winds peaked again. Slowly, they could feel the winds die down, then they stopped completely.
THUD. THUD. Dark Arrow slowly stood, and headed towards the room. Samurai had finally come up, and he ran into the room first. Stellar went over to the now sleeping Totem.
“Sorry boss. Guess I need to work on my targeting.”
“It’s okay, we accomplished what we needed to. Samurai, take him to the infirmary please. Be sure to button everything down in case he wakes up in the same mood. Rapido, take Totem back to her room. Everyone else, get cleaned up and meet me back here in 20 minutes. NO – guys, all questions can wait that long. By then, I’ll have figured out my thoughts, and hopefully I’ll have had a chance to talk to my parents. Go.”
20 minutes later…
Atmosphere sat up in the infirmary. He knew what he’d done, and was mortified. He looked over at his mentor and friend, and was relieved to see a smile there.
“Well, are we over our little tantrum?” Samurai chided.
“I can’t believe the way I acted. I’m so embarrassed. Please tell me know one was hurt.”
“I can tell you that my friend, although I cannot say the same for the control room.” Samurai replied.
Atmosphere looked down. “I was just so angry and hurt. She’s been right among them all this time. Hurting and killing our friends. Just one more mission the Titans failed. And then I thought… Oh God… It could have been…”
Samurai moved closer to comfort his friend, “Yes, it could have been one of them. It could have been your mother or father, even your older sister or younger sister. I know your uncle’s death hurt you. More than you’ve let on. But we still have a job to do. Turn the anger. Use it for your benefit, not hers.” Atmosphere looked up. He knew from his mentor’s tone that he meant business.
Dark Arrow walked in, and Samurai moved aside. Atmosphere was glad that he didn’t leave though. He was surprised at how calm and caring DA’s voice was. “I’ve just confirmed it. It’s spreading like a virus through the hero AND villain communities. I’d genuinely be shocked if there’s a hero in the world that hasn’t heard. Heck, even the Green Lantern corps has been placed on alert, and there’s talk of sending a special capture squad in to bring her down.” Atmosphere paused before replying,
“I’m really sorry Robert. I shouldn’t have lost it like that.”
Dark Arrow surprised him by laughing, “Hahahaha. Man, are you kidding? You should have seen my living room and dining room when I found out my sister had died. I think we can forgive you for being upset. Believe me, you’re not the only one that feels the Titans should have known. My God, half of their team is made up of questionable characters. Yet they’re acting like there was no way they could have known. It was just a matter of time if you ask me. But we need to let the others know, and decide on our next course of action. Can I count you in?”
Atmosphere was grateful for his friends’ attitude. “Absolutely. I can’t wait to hear what they have to say about the so-called Titans of Justice.”

A Warehouse, 75 miles outside of Oklahoma City…
Jake asked again, “Are you sure this is where the boss said to bring the trucks? It’s about as far from anything as you can get. And that skull symbol everywhere is giving me the creeps. Bad enough the boss is such a fre…”
Floyd cuffed him on the ear and said, “That’s enough. The boss gave us explicit directions, and we’re gonna follow them. I ain’t about to become one of his sacrifices on account of your stupidity. And if you talk bad about the boss again, I’ll kill you myself.”
Just then, the doors in front of them rolled up. Hooded men directed them to the bays in order for their trucks to be loaded. Jake was shaking at how many of them there appeared to be. They had brought two separate trucks, and backed them up to the doors as ordered. They got out of their trucks to wait while they were being loaded.
“Ah, so you two idiots CAN follow instructions.” Jake started at the voice.
The female had crept up right beside him, and he turned as pale as a sheet. She had what looked like blood drying around her lips, although it was hard to be sure in the fading sunlight. Her breath was awful. “Do you two understand your instructions? You’re to drive straight out of here and head back to the citadel in Washington. You are to stop for NOTHING. You are to talk to no one. You will not question anything that you see. You will be joined by an escort at some point, but you are not to wonder about them. Is that understood?”
Floyd immediately replied, “Yes N…” The word died in his throat as she leapt upon him. “YOU KNOW THE RULE! My name is power, and you have not been given such yet! You are a loyal follower, and it would be a shame to kill you.”
Floyd was a big man, and had been a former boxing heavyweight champion. But he was amazed at how quickly and completely she had taken him down. He squeaked, “Yes ma’am! So sorry your holiness. Please forgive me.”
“You are forgiven. You have been faithful, so you have built up some measure of grace.” She pulled her sword as she said this, but none of the men standing around even noticed as she was so smooth. “Ahh, but you on the other hand Jake. Well, I’d say it’s been a pleasure to know you, but that would just be a lie. I believe the word Floyd stopped you from saying was freak? Pity. You had potential. You just never realized it.” In one blindingly fast motion, she swung her sword. Jake’s head was completely severed, and Floyd vomited. Most of the hooded men around laughed. She caught Jake’s head, and held it over hers. “Ahh… now I am washed in the blood of an unwilling sacrifice. Let them try to take what we have now! Hahahahaha! YOU! You will drive the second truck. And hell help you if you have anything to say about it!”

Back aboard the JLA Satellite, Conference Room…
“Well, that’s about it. You guys now know what we know. Bad enough that their carelessness got people killed. Now they’ve been harboring a fugitive. I can tell you right now, Waller is talking to people. She wants them all brought in for their actions and carelessness. It doesn’t look good for the Titans. Now you know why Atmosphere lost it.”
Airwave was one of the first to speak up. “Well, I think I speak for everyone when I say we understand. Certainly explains things. What are our options here though? We can’t just let her continue on her rampage.”
Lt. Atom replied at that point, “And we have no intention of doing so. But we’ve put in a lot of time and effort on this. Atmosphere has already tweaked his tracking program now that we know she’s Venus as well. But it will still be a bit before we can find her. In the meantime, we can’t let this opportunity pass by. It’s simply too important.”
Stellar took this turn to speak, “I have to agree. We’ve put a huge amount of resources into tonight, and this is almost as important as finding Black Venus. We simply can’t abandon it, especially considering we have no sure idea where she is.” Everyone else nodded their agreement.
Everyone else nodded in agreement.
Dark Arrow retook the floor. “I guess that settles it. We go ahead with our plans and head after the Crime Bible. As soon as that’s settled, we offer our services to Waller and anyone else that wants them. If they decide to bring the Titans in, we’ll be there to assist. I’ve also called in a ton of favors. Every villain, hero, and person in between I know is now actively looking for Venus and will let us know the minute she pops up. Everyone get some rest. We have about an hour, then I’ll meet you at the teleporters. I’ve arranged transportation once we get Earthside. As planned, we’ll have to intercept them enroute. It’s my understanding they’ve already finished loading and are on the move. Let’s go.”

A Dark Road Somewhere in Missouri….
Floyd had managed to clean himself up somewhat after his accident. He’d never really liked Jake, but seeing his death had unnerved him. Most of the others standing around had continued to laugh as she had taken Jakes body and strung it up. He hadn’t minded that, but when she gutted him he had thrown up a second time. Now he was driving alone through the darkness. He wasn’t sure where the other truck had gone, and quite honestly didn’t care. All he wanted was to deliver his cargo.
He nearly wet himself when he saw the… well he could only guess it was a man running beside him. His face was horribly disfigured, and his/its arms nearly touched the ground as he ran. He flashed Floyd a hideously wicked smile, and then disappeared behind the truck. Floyd could occasionally see him in the rear view mirror as he drove. An SUV pulled around him and took a lead spot. Floyd could see at least 2 figures inside, and knew that they were there for him. “What in the world is in this truck?” he thought nervously to himself. Then he realized, he really didn’t want to know.

Church of Humanity – Inner Citadel…
Blood finished his meal, and turned towards his attendants. “Come here mother. I require dressing.” The shorter woman immediately moved towards him and began helping him don his body armor and helmet. Blood shoved her aside and moved to his communication alcove. He waited only a second before the face of his beloved appeared. “Yes master?” she hissed. “Is everything in place as I commanded?” he asked. “Yes – everything so far is proceeding just as you foresaw. It won’t be long now, and the Bible will be back where you can keep an eye on it.” “Good my dear. I will be on my way shortly.” Blood grinned.
“You’re coming here? Is that really necessary? I assure you we have everything under control,” she said. “I understand your desire to prove yourself to me. However, in this matter, I must take no unneeded chances. I’ll see you soon.”
Blood turned away from the console, and laughed. He knew she had not expected him to handle this personally. He so enjoyed making sure even his most devoted followers could never predict his next move. He downed another flagon of the blood he had saved from one of the many “heroes” he had imprisoned. He could feel the power surge into him. “Hmm… I like this one. Enhanced strength and flight. Yes, I’ll keep him around…”

A Secret Location…
Grodd was nearly beside himself with glee. He had wanted Blood to join the fray himself, but hadn’t dared hope since Blood was so unpredictable. He couldn’t help but feel elated at the results of his manipulations.
“Hey boss, I got the popcorn. Extra salt like you wanted.” Kid Zoom whizzed into the room and took a spot in front of the special monitor Grodd had rigged up. “You never cease to amaze me boss. You can see the JLA, Blood’s citadel, and what is this one? It can’t possibly be…”
“Oh it is,” Grodd smirked, “it is the inside of one of the trucks. Did you really think I wouldn’t get a front row seat for this?” The others started filing in. Grodd had made it clear they were to be here, and they wouldn’t have missed it anyway. “Now we get to sit back and enjoy the show.” Grodd said as his laughter filled the room.
