Staging Point B
“Dark Arrow to Team 2 Leader, please respond.”
“Team 2 Leader here, standing by for your signal.”
“Good – we’re hitting the insertion point now. We’ll be leaving the transport and setting up in ambush. The convoy is about 20 minutes from us now, although there is an advance guard up front. If all goes well, we won’t even need you guys, but wait for Samurai’s signal just in case.”
“Got it DA, Team 2 Leader signing off. Good luck. Okay, you guys, you heard him. Hopefully we won’t even need to get involved, but I want everyone ready just in case we are. It’ll take us 5 minutes to get to them from here, but if we’re needed I want that to be all it will take.”
Primary Staging Point, Outside of Springfield, MO
Dark Arrow looked around at his team. He had to struggle to see them all in the darkness. He knew that once they stopped the convoy, they’d most likely be recognized. But he’d ordered everyone into the stealth versions of their costumes anyway. No sense making it any easier on their prey. Rapido had reported at least one metahuman guard trailing behind the vehicle. He was an unknown and would need to be dealt with first. There was a black SUV immediately in front of the semi, and a Mustang running about 5 minutes ahead of them. The Mustang would need to at least be accounted for.
“Rapido, Totem, I need you to handle the Mustang. It will need to be taken out quickly to keep them from sounding any alarms. If you encounter any resistance, I need to know right away. Get going.”
“Hawk” Vixen said as she touched her Totem. A cheetah was faster, but not for distances like this. They had over 2 miles to cover, and the last thing she wanted was to run out of energy. She knew she couldn’t match Rapido’s speed, but this would allow her to soar up over the woods as well. She took off after Rapido, hoping things went as planned.
Dark Arrow turned to the rest of the team. “Any more questions, now is the time to ask them. We have at least one hostile, and if you think the SUV is being driven by your average bodyguards, you’re crazier than the old man up in the satellite.”
Samurai sent a squelch through their earpieces, causing all of them but Airwave to grimace. “Sorry Arrow, I needed to clear a small feedback loop.” Samurai said. Airwave went into a fit of laughter, while DA cursed.
“That actually hurt you miserable old codger. I hope you’re more reliable than that when we confront the transport. Hopefully the Alzheimer’s won’t take over.” Dark Arrow said half-jokingly.
“Aww, has oo godda boo boo?” Samurai could never resist taunting Dark Arrow when Arrow needed it the most. “Remember Arrow, the pebble is formed from a giant rock.”
“Good grief, what does that even have to do with… Never mind. You just make sure you’re ready.” Dark Arrow said. “Old kook” he muttered, much more quietly than before. “Atmosphere, what do you see?” He’d had Atmosphere hidden in cloud cover over the intercept point for 10 minutes.
“Nice fog tonight boss, lots of clouds to work with. I’ve pulled up a lot of ground fog, so we’ll have good cover. There’s a sharp S-turn right before the intercept point. Looks like the topography maps were right. The mustang just went through here, but the truck is about 10 minutes behind because of all the fog.”
Lt. Atom said quietly, “Now we wait.”
Rapido & Totem
Rapido & Totem could see the car just in front of them. Totem motioned that she would make initial impact. She dropped down just in front of it, touching her totem and saying “Rhino” as she did. The car slammed into her and nearly ripped in two. She staggered a bit from the blow, but luckily her powers held out. Rapido proceeded to dismantle the car at a stunning speed. Totem ran to driver’s side door, and immediately panicked. “Dark Arrow, the pace car was empty! They’re probably aware you guys are coming!” Rapido stopped and stared.
“I can’t believe it. It’s like a really sophisticated toy. There’s not even anywhere for someone to sit.”
“Toy? Did you say toy? Wow, that sounds like my queue. Why don’t we have some fun?” Totem ducked the swing of the bat that emerged from the bushes. Unfortunately, that meant Rapido standing beside her caught a glancing blow. Totem recognized this loon from Atmosphere’s files. He certainly wasn’t one to be messed with.
“What are you doing here Toyman? And how on earth did you break out?” She looked at Rapido, who was a little shaken. Luckily, the bat had just caught him on the arm.
“Ah ah ah, can’t go spoiling all my fun. Here, I’d like to introduce you to my NEW giant friend.”
Rapido nodded that he was fine, and then raced into the bushes where Toyman pointed. They’d both read the last case file, and Rapido expected what was there. “I’ll dismantle the bear, you deal with the whackjob.”
Totem switched to tiger and leapt. She felt her hands close around Toyman’s throat, and noticed that he was still smiling. Her claws left a vicious gash across his cheek, and he began to laugh. “What is so funny?”
Toyman was almost in tears he was laughing so hard. “It’s like a giant ping pong game.”
She used her tiger sight, and dropped Toyman immediately. Something huge was batting Rapido from tree to tree in the woods. “Elephant!” she cried as she charged into it’s leg. “DA we could use a hand here!”
Dark Arrow
Dark Arrow received the message that the car had been empty, and immediately moved both Stellar and Atom into the road. Both of them began to emit blinding flashes of light. Luckily their stealth suits came with compensating goggles or he would have been blind as well as deaf. As if on queue, the SUV pulled in sight around the S-turn and stopped. He could hear the semi stop behind it, and heard the thudding feet continue.
“Out of our way you two! Do you have any idea what I can do to you? They call me Brute, and I serve Brother Blood. I know you know who that is, now MOVE!”
Brute never stopped, and it looked sure that Atom & Stellar would be crushed. Luckily, he had his own strong man. Sixty Minute Soldier came barreling out of the bushes at the grotesque figure and slammed into his side. They went straight across the road and into the forest.
Dark Arrow stayed hidden, waiting with Airwave. “Airwave, any sounds from the SUV?”
Airwave concentrated, and said, “2 heartbeats, and… something odd.” The SUV exploded outward just then. They saw a woman dressed in a tight robe somersault out of the wreckage, and a short man smoking a pipe followed. The third figure he knew, and couldn’t believe their bad luck.
“The something odd is Brother freaking Blood! Move in fast!” Even as fast as they were, the hooded woman went straight for Stellar. She dodged his blast, and reached directly under him. Dark Arrow saw him deliver a vicious upward strike directly to his throat, while her other hand tore his converter belt off. She tossed it to the pipe smoker, who concentrated and sent it flying out of sight. She got behind Stellar, and flipped him backwards over her into the ground. Lt. Atom wouldn’t be so easy, and he countered her first swing with a vicious backhand and sent a green blast that hit the woman in the arm. Atmosphere had descended and was now fighting the pipe smoker.
Dark Arrow and Airwave went straight for Blood. Arrow surprised him with a glue arrow to the face, but he knew that wouldn’t last long. Airwave cranked up the decibels to sonic boom levels, and every window in the truck shattered. That must have been the queue though, because the back end opened and about 40 hooded men clad in black poured out.
“Samurai,” Dark Arrow shouted, “It’s gone pear-shaped. Get the second team here now!” Blood flew straight into Dark Arrow and punched him viciously. Airwave sent a high shrieking sound that staggered Blood and gave Dark Arrow a moment to recover. Unfortunately, Airwave paid for it. Blood kicked him square in the privates, and followed it up with a punch straight to his cheek. Airwave went down.
Atmosphere knew things were going badly. The pipe smoker had called himself Whaler, but it didn’t matter. Atmosphere had sucked the oxygen from his lungs, and he’d collapsed. Now Atmosphere turned to deal with the many, many angry, hooded men coming from the back of the truck. He could see that the driver had run off, and at least knew he was safe. Atmosphere began sending gusts of wind into the men, but there were so many. They began drawing weapons, and he knew the odds were against him.
Arrow knew he was outclassed, but continued to dodge Blood’s strikes. He knew though that he was no match, and started to work his way to Atmosphere. “Hey bud, you looked like you could use a hand.” He had turned and run to Atmosphere’s position, firing arrows into the crowd of men.
Blood had screamed “COWARD!” and chased him. He caught a closer glimpse as one of the men fell, and then knew at once they were in trouble. “Atmosphere, we need to switch up! Draw Blood to Atom, and then take out the woman.”
“Who is she? She’s unbelievably fast.” Atmosphere asked.
“God didn’t you see the symbol on the men?”
“Too busy, they were trying so hard to kill me.”
“They wear the symbol of Kali Yuga.”
Atmosphere blanched but knew what that meant. That meant the woman in the SUV had to be Kobra, and she was more dangerous than Blood. He fired a blast at Blood as he turned that sent him sprawling. He dove over Blood and tweaked his nose Three Stooges style. He needed Blood angry and not thinking. Blood howled in rage and pursued Atmosphere. Dark Arrow had taken cover behind the cab and was picking off Kobra agents with startling efficiency.
Lt. Atom began to tire, and knew he was almost done. His blasts had started to miss, and even through his protective coating he could “feel” the blows the woman landed. She had started to hit more than she missed, and moved like a snake. Just then, he saw her fly forward. Atmosphere had hit her from behind, but Blood was right behind him. Atom blasted Blood with a full-power radiation ray, and Blood went down. Atmosphere began to perform a deadly ballet with the woman.
Totem and Rapido
Totem had slammed into the giant’s leg full bore, and he had dropped his hold on Rapido. The owner of the leg howled in pain, and swatted blindly. “You b****! That actually hurt.” He swatted blindly, but she’d already switched to orangutan, and climbed up his back. He grabbed and swatted for her futilely, and she picked up her pace. She reached his collar, said, “Gorilla,” and swung with all her might at his temple. He had heard her say it, but had swatted too late. Gigantus went down with a crash, and Totem dropped to the ground. She went to pick up Rapido, and checked his pulse.
Too late, she heard the whiffle bat swing. She was still in harnessing the power of the gorilla, but the bat had obviously been upgraded. She couldn’t help think as the blackness overtook her, “I’ll never hear the end of it from Atmosphere.”
“Hee hee, NOW we’ll have some fun.” He kicked Gigantus, and took out a toy buzzer and put it on his tongue to wake him. Gigantus stirred, and Toyman grabbed Totem by the ankle, pulling her through the brush. He dabbed a blankie on his cuts as he went and couldn’t help but begin laughing.
Atmosphere
Atmosphere nearly vomited every time the woman would move in to strike. He could smell the decaying blood on her, and she smiled sadistically. It was taking every ounce of his martial arts training to fend off her blows, and each time he could think of some use of his powers, she moved to interrupt his concentration. She was probably at least a low-level telepath, and Atmosphere needed to think to do anything other than an air blast. He’d landed a couple of good blows, but needed an edge.
“Naja” he heard Samurai’s signal through his ear. He knew his mentor was monitoring the fight, and wondered what that meant.
“Naja, give up. We’ve already taken down your boyfriend.”
The woman smiled in response. Atmosphere had been exactly correct. Lt. Atom had been too much for Blood, and had blasted him into the back of the truck. It had shattered much like the SUV, and Blood had gone down. Unfortunately, the Brute had reappeared and the Sixty Minute Soldier was nowhere in sight. Atom had begun fighting him, but was already weakened.
“I usually kill people on sight for saying my name. But you’ve proven a worthy adversary. Although, I have to wonder how you know it. Wait, no I don’t. Samurai was your mentor. He must still be helping you. You DARE to use my name ex-lover? You have that much disregard for your pupil’s safety!” She screamed to the heavens. It was as though she was completely refreshed. She attacked Atmosphere viciously, and as he dodged she reached out with her other hand and ripped through the side of his costume. Atmosphere screamed in pain as she tossed part of his ear, his earpiece, and a chunk of his hair in the direction of her lover, Blood. He’d find it when the time was right.
“Now I REALLY hurt you.” She said as she advanced.
Dark Arrow
Dark Arrow wasn’t doing much better. He’d managed to take out more than half of the ninjas, but he was almost out of arrows and very tired. Where the h*** was his backup? Lt. Atom was having his head handed to him by Brute, and Atmosphere was pouring blood from a wound on his head.
As if on queue, he heard a beautiful voice from above. “Need a hand big boy?” Ninjas went flying everywhere, and Dark Arrow smiled.
Grodd’s Secret Lair
Grodd and his friends were laughing riotously. They were absolutely loving the show. Popcorn, beer bottles, food wrappers, and other trash littered the room. Blood had been punched around from one end of the fight to the other. Dark Arrow and his friends were getting their heads handed to them, just as he’d hoped. And there had even been blood drawn. “Hey Grodd,” Sinestro started, “Look, they brought friends!”
Grodd roared in anger. This wouldn’t do at all.
