Titans of Justice: Nightvision mini:
A Blackbird in the Bat Tree Part 2 of 2
Written by Nightvision

Nightvision jumped from the rooftop and used his cape to slow his fall. When he landed, he did see the same thing from the rooftop. “Huntress, what are you doing here?”
“Trying to stop this wannabe criminal. Going to help or stand there with your mouth open.” Huntress said.
“Tell you what. I will make it easy for the both of you. I will knock you out and take my leave.” Proteus said as he changed his hand into a mace and began to stretch it towards Huntress and Nightvision.
“Watch out!” Nightvision yelled as he jumped and tackled Huntress before the mace hit her.
“
What trying to be a newbie again. Get off me. He is getting away.” Huntress said as she shoved Nightvision off of her and armed her wrist crossbows.
“Thanks for the laugh crime fighters. We will have to do this again when I have more time” Proteus said as he began to take off.
“Hmm an Olympian who evidentially doesn’t know his mythology. Poor Icarus, I knew him well.” Huntress said as she lit one of her darts on fire and shot it at the feathers on Proteus’s wing.
“You witch. You are trying to kill me. I will make sure you pay.” Proteus said as he fell and stretched out his limbs to brace for impact.
“Not so fast Proteus.” Nightvision said. He reached into his belt and grabbed a wing-ding and some liquid nitrogen capsules. “This should freeze you in your tracks.” Nightvision threw the wing-ding with perfect timing hitting Proteus as his body came to rest on the ground and froze him.
“I had this battle Nightvision. You didn’t need to stick your nose into my affairs. Besides, you really didn’t care about what happened to me after the explosion.” Huntress said with anger.
“What a minute. I have been trying to find answers between other duties. Besides, you needed help tonight like it or not.” Nightvision said.
“I guess you are right.” Huntress said as she walked towards the frozen Proteus. “Still want them to pay for hurting me and the others.”
“Two wrongs don’t make a right Huntress. Where are the others?” Nightvision said.
“They are safe, and this wannabe will play for what Sting Ray did.” Huntress said as she took her boot up to use her heel to break the ice figure.
“Come on bird brain. You got bats in the belfry again. You mean to tell me you are so confused you can’t see thru this faker.” A voice said from the fire escape. “Let me shine some light on the matter, and you will see that your ‘Huntress’ is really a partner of Proteus.” Just then a light with a blackbird in the center hit the iced Proteus shoots spectrums of light in all directions lighting up the alley.
Just then the Huntress image melted away with the light to reveal the true dark image.
“Her name is Nox. She was at one time teammates of Proteus. Just like Proteus, she can change her appearance however she doesn’t like the light.” The mystery person said as she perched on the top of the fire escape.
“OK Bat witch. Now you and Nightvision can pay.” Nox said as she regained her focus after being weakened by the light.
“See Nox, I knew your brain would be too much in the dark. Gotham has had Batman, Bat boys, Batgirls, Bat hounds, Batwoman, Batzarro, and even Bat-mites, but I have never heard of a Bat witch. The name is Blackbird. Remember it.” Blackbird said as she jumped down. As she spread her arms, wings appeared from her body to her arms and with a flap of her arms, feather darts flew from the wings towards Nox.
“Fool, I have the power of the darkness. Those insignificant feathers you shed will have no affect on me.” Nox said as she conjured up her powers.
“Nox, you are right I guess I have egg on my face.” Blackbird said and then grabbed an egg like object from her belt pouch and threw it at Nox. The egg exploded on impact releasing a dazzling light show with sounds of the Blackbird. “See I might have lost a few of my feathers, but I didn’t count my eggs before they were hatched. Night night Noxy.” Just as Nox could see again, Blackbird landed a roundhouse kick right between her eyes KO’ing Nox for the night.
“Blackbird. Impressive, but what makes you think you can be a hero in this town.” Nightvision asked.
“Doesn’t tonight prove anything? I have been doing this for weeks, and if it wasn’t for me tonight, you would have fallen for Nox’s trick of making you believe she was Huntress.” Blackbird said.
“Oracle to Nightvision. If you are able to, report in please.”
“Nightvision here. The Huntress was not Huntress. It was a person named Nox who was teammates of Proteus. Both have been apprehended.”
“How did you find out about Nox being Huntress?” Oracle asked.
“The mystery vigilante showed up and possibly saved me from a mistake with Nox.” Nightvision concluded.
“Great. Another person that wants to be a hero. Some can’t figure out this is a risk business.” Oracle said.
“Well, some are willing to make the sacrifice to defend the city they love and help out when others need it.” Blackbird interrupted.
“Who is this? This is a secure line!” Oracle exclaimed.
“My name is Blackbird. Thanks to your Birds of Prey earrings, I am able to communicate with you and Nightvision if needed.”
“So you were the one in the Clocktower that stole the equipment. Let me tell you. That is equipment that one a few people know about and understand how to use.” Oracle exclaimed, “And another thing…”
“Relax Oracle. I will return the belt when I am able to make my own. The earrings and necklace though I love and go with my costume. Other than that, thanks for the information as it was helpful making my costume.” Blackbird said.
“You little snot. How dare you…” Oracle started yelling. Nightwing tried to calm her down only to get Babs more fired up, “You think this is a rental place or something. Heroes are not something that is bought. It takes training, time, commitment, and a lot more that you are appearing to lack.”
“Relax. Why don’t you go back to being a librarian and sit in the quiet and read or research. I have my situation under control. You will be hearing from me again soon I am sure.” Blackbird said.
“WHAT DID YOU SAY?” Oracle yelled. Nightwing got Oracle to rethink saying too much more.
“Oracle. Please go back to your regular duties. I will get Nox and Proteus to Arkham and address this situation.” Nightvision said.
“Nightvision, go to visual. I want to do some research on this ‘Blackbird’.” Oracle asked.
“I have it under control. Nightvision out.”
Nightvision made sure his visual unit in his mask was disconnected and communicator was offline. “Well since you did help. Care to help me get 2 to police custody or Arkham.” Nightvision asked Blackbird.
“Well you are in luck. Sounds like the GCPD is on there way. Time for this bird to fly.” Blackbird said.
“Wait. Can we talk?” Nightvision asked.
“Why? You seem the type that only want to talk when you are ready not when the other person is ready.” Blackbird said. “When you are ready, do your bird call, and I will see if I can hear you.”
Blackbird shot a grapple in the air and took off. Just then the GCPD entered the alleyway. “FREEZE!” Said the leading officer.
Nightvision threw a smoke pellet and disappeared into the night. He wanted to go back to the Clocktower to talk to his parents, but wasn’t sure what to think about Blackbird. Friend or foe? Is it who he thinks it is? Can they be trusted? To get some thinking in, Nightvision swung from rooftop to rooftop for a while and patrolled.
A little while later, he finally decided to take a long way to the Clocktower in case someone wanted to follow him. “Oracle, I am here. Is it safe?” Nightvision said as he entered the main area.
“Safe as far as no one else is detected around here. I beat up a few punching bags thanks to Blackbird, so your dad have to help me with some of the bruises I will have in the morning. Other than that I’m peachy. I see GCPD picked up Nox and Proteus and delivered them to Arkham.”
“Yep. Almost got caught by the police, but got away.” Nightvision said.
“Well I know now somewhat what I am up against for security around here. Do you have any leads that helps determine who Blackbird is and how they knew about the Clocktower?” Oracle asked Nightvision.
“You probably know as much as I do Mom. I still can’t believe I almost fell for Nox’s impersonation of Huntress. Am I that consumed?” Nightvision said.
“No. Most shape shifters are hard to detect. Back to Blackbird. Did she seem familiar with the equipment? Did anything about her costume look familiar?” Oracle said.
“She really didn’t use the belt that much. The belt was definitely bat related.” Nightvision said.
“Brendon, what can you remember?” Dick asked.
“Dick, let it go. He has had a long and difficult time lately and tonight’s battle did not help. Brendon go home and rest. We can cover this in a day or 2.” Barbara said.
“Thanks mom. If I can sleep tonight. I will talk to you guys later. Thanks for being there for me tonight and always.” Brendon said.
“No problem,” said Barbara. “Remember we are here for you.”
“Good night to you both.” Brendon said as he took the secret entrance back to his loft.
“Why didn’t you ask him more questions? I could tell he was hiding something.” Dick said.
“Yes, I could tell too. It was getting late, and we are all tired. Sometimes cooler heads prevail. When Brendon wants to say what he knows about Blackbird including her identity, he will let us know. Until then, no sense of pushing him as it may push him away from us and disconnect him from everyone.” Barbara said. “Let’s call it a night and go home.”
“No wonder I love you Babs. You always have an answer. Let’s go home.” Dick said
Back at the loft, Brendon was able to get his costume off and stored prior to entering the loft. “Brenda, I am back, are you still up?” Brendon said. No one answered. He looked out to the moonlit terrace and seen her staring out at the stars as she sat. He decided it was best to go out to her.
“Hi. Seen anything interesting yet?” Brendon asked as he sat down.
“Nope. Just remembering Tamarrean and how the night sky looked there?” Brenda said.
“What do you remember about Tamarrean?” Brendon asked.
“OK detective, I can see this is a test. Look, I know you read my journals of when I was with Dashen Dome. You question everything about me. Let me show you I am real. I didn’t put this in the journal and only you and I know this. When we lied there talking about out future, I talked about Kory telling the story of her soul merging wedding years ago. You said that would be a bit creepy for a man and woman to merge like that, and I said what you afraid that you would wear Donna’s wedding dress after that.” Brenda said abruptly.
“I remember. I was just trying to start a conversation.” Brendon tried to explain.
“Start a conversation,” Brenda said in a frustrated tone. “I have been trying to talk to you ever since I came back about things including why I came back. Last night, I was worried about you and tried to talk only to get a door slammed in my face. Well, I know how I can fix that.” Brenda jumped up and stormed to her room.
“Brenda wait! I had a lot on my mind.” Brendon started to say but the door slammed before he could finish his thought.
“God, sometimes I wish someone like Daniel was still around. Keeping this from everyone, I have troubles even talking to her. I can’t talk to Mom or Dad as they will be all paranoid about their past with Talia and Ra’s to trust her. Grandpa Bruce isn’t talking to me right now, and there aren’t many I can open up to on the Titans of Justice. Heck, I even covered I think for Brenda tonight if my suspensions are right. I still love her even though I read why she started seeing me. I truly think that she wants to be with me, but I trusted her once and got hurt with her death, can I truly trust her now?” Brendon said as he stared up to the heavens with a small tear running down his cheek.
Brendon walked to Brenda’s room and knocked on the door. “Brenda, can I come in?” The knocks opened the door. “Brenda, look I need to explain something.” Brendon said as he saw Brenda with a rope on and her back to him.
“How about THIS!” Brenda said as she disrobed and turned around. Revealed was scantly clad Blackbird with mask. “Seems like you can talk to me better in this look than a look you knew for years.”
“Brenda wait. I figured you were Blackbird, but you don’t have to do this.” Brendon tried to explain.
“I don’t. You walk out when I want to talk to you. Then tonight, we finally meet in costume, and you wanted to talk, yet you didn’t even defend me from your parents. WHY?” Brenda said as she broke down as she hit Brendon repeatedly in the chest.
“Because they don’t know about you coming back” Brendon said
“They don’t?” Brenda said puzzled. “Why? Are you ashamed of me that much?”
“No. I can’t tell them. They know about your involvement in Dashen Dome as I brought back your journals after my fight with them. I know they read some of the entries. I just can’t bring myself to tell them. I don’t know what to think myself,” Brendon said in anguish.
“Well, I will make it easy for you. I will leave and disappear again and you will never see me again!” Brenda said as she walked towards her bed and started packing. “I want to tell you this before I leave though. I know you read and what you read in my journals. What you don’t know if how I really felt. I admit that when I first met you in college that yes I was placed there because of Dashen Dome and their goal with you. However as time past, it changed from a ‘job’ to really caring for a person with a golden heart. It got to a point when we were in Tamarrean that I wanted to ‘quit’ Dashen Dome which they did not like. The night you were going to propose, I was torn. Part of me wanted to be excited, but thanks to Dashen Dome, I almost knew everything that you were going to do. Then it killed me when I came back to Gotham and found that Dashen Dome won and you were Nightvision. Look, I know you don’t really care to hear this right now, so here are the journals you haven’t read including the day of my death and the 1st day I can remember after I came. Read them and know my feelings for you are true.” Brenda grabbed the journals and handed them to Brendon. “Don’t you realize that I gave up everything once for you and made a big risk to come back to you? Now I am going. I won’t say anymore.”
Brenda started to walk away when Brendon grabbed her arm. “Brenda, wait.” Brendon said as he placed his hand on her mask to remove it and wipe the tears from her face. “I probably deserve you walking out on me. Listen though first. You don’t know how much it killed me walking up that night to see your body. I literally went against everyone to be Nightvision to avenge your death and tried to prevent from happening to anyone again. Then I was dealing with the anniversary of your death and Dashen Dome tried to sink their claws into me, and I thought they were playing with my mind with hints of your return. After a grueling battle and finding out about the journals, I came back to you being alive and here. Right after that, I was trying to deal if it was really you and how you were back. Then STAR Labs happened which put my need away from all of this and now I finally get back to Gotham only to keep a secret from my parents that shake my world then find out that you are a vigilante. You know that when I figured out that you used the passage to the Clocktower and stole that stuff from the Clocktower, I thought NO, Mom and Dad talked about the cost of this business including how Mom was shot by Joker, Tim’s parents, Dad’s ordeals, Grandpa’s back, Stephanie Brown, etc and now I finally get someone that I still may love back and she has jumped into the business. I know my breath would be wasted trying to stop you then you feuding with my mom was like ‘YIKES what am I into now.”
Brenda sat her bags down and said, “Look. I did it for you. I know you needed help, and I felt I could help you. I love Gotham. Remember, I really didn’t have a childhood and really didn’t have a home, but with college, Gotham became my home. Plus, I knew you were really involved with Nightvision and with your time with the Titans, you need help especially with Huntress gone or dead. I also did it because you wouldn’t talk to me, so I felt maybe you would talk to Blackbird. Brendon, I still love you. I want to be there for you and help you. It is just you won’t let me back in. I am out of Dashen Dome. They are the ones who killed me. It is complicated how I am back. Part of my return I don’t even know about. However, I know I am in the way here. I will go back to where I was living before I came here. No worries, Blackbird will be around, but I know you don’t want Brenda around and how can I blame you. I had your trust and you see what I was for a time. If you read those journals I gave you, you will see I am yours if you want me.”
“Brenda, you had my trust. Now, you have it but I can’t help be skeptical about Dashen Dome’s hold on you.” Brendon said. He moved towards Brenda, grabbed her head and kissed her then held her. “I want you to stay. We can start out now from the day you died or wherever you want, but we both need to work at this. You can’t be a secret forever, but that is my job to tell my mom and dad. I know that they have idea something is up, and I don’t know with the Blackbird incident how things will go, but I will be with you. Plus, you will have a trainer with me on being Blackbird as long as you want to be Blackbird. This isn’t going to be easy. We aren’t ‘Who wants to be a Super Hero?’ The training will be rough, and for now, you are part hero part side kick, but in the field, Nightvision is boss. Why don’t we get a blanket, some of the Tammarrean Orchids, and some pillows and talk out on the terrace.”
“We can’t Brendon. You have work tomorrow.” Brenda said
“You are more important to me than the Wayne Foundation. My Dad will understand. If not, this is what I want to do.” Brendon said as he grabbed Brenda’s hand.
As they walked out to the terrace, a feel of peace, love, and good omens filled the night sky. The two laid down and talked about the past and what has happened to them in their secret identities. As the night slowly ended, a shooting star flew through the sky showing a sign of things yet to come.
THE END!

THE END!
