Scott Trevor hastily threw on a pair of jeans and hurried downstairs where his mother was sitting with her arms crossed.
“I came to surprise you, but you surprised me.” she said. Scott could tell by her expression that his mother was disappointed in him.
“Mother--I didn’t know you were coming.”
“Obviously. Do you always bring cheap hussies back to my properties? Do I need to have the place fumigated?” she said angrily.
“Jerrica’s not like that. She…she just needed a friend and I let things get out of hand.” Scott said as he sat down on the couch.
‘Jerrica? Was that Jerrica Benton?” Diana Trevor asked with interest.
“Yeah. You know Jerrica Benton?” her startled son asked.
“Why yes! Well, I don’t know her personally, but that woman works endlessly to help the world. She donates tons of money and time to all kinds of charities. She even donates to the veterans hospital your grandmother founded during World War II.” Diana explained.
“Jerrica never told me that.” Scott thought to himself, very impressed at Jerrica’s benevolence for the hospital where he often visited injured and retired veterans.
“Scott, I’m sorry for the way I reacted. No mother wants to see her son, well let’s just say no mother needs to walk in on her son and who he chooses to spend his time with. So, are you and Jerrica, uh, dating?” Diana said smiling.
“NO! Mother, like I told you, things just got out of hand.” Scott replied, although he felt something deep for Jerrica.
“Listen. Go tell her that your very embarrassed mother would like to take the two of you to lunch today. Would you like that?”
“Yeah…that would be great. I’ll go tell her everything’s cool.” Scott hurried upstairs and entered his bedroom. The bed was a mess and there was a note lying on his pillow. He picked it up and read it.
‘Scott,
I’m sorry I got in you trouble with your mom. Thanks for being a friend and for listening to my sob story. I’ll call you later.

Scott looked out the window and saw a purplish blur streaking through the sky. He smiled and headed for the shower.
Later that afternoon, Jerrica Benton sat in her office. She had some work to do, but couldn’t get Rio off of her mind. She kept thinking about Scott Trevor as well. She was snapped out of her thoughts by the phone ringing. It was her sister, Kimber who was now the US ambassador to the Czech Republic. She had called Kimber earlier to fill her in about Rio and to see if she could use some of her U.N. contacts to find out anything about Duela Dent or Rio.
“How are you Jerrica?”Kimber asked.
“Good. I’m good.”
“No you’re not. You’ve been crying. I’m on another continent on a bad connection and I can tell.”
“Ok, Kimber, I’m not so great right now. How do you think I feel? I’m sorry-I didn’t mean to snap.”
“Don’t apologize. I’ve only got a few minutes before I have to go to another boring party, but I was able to talk to my friend in Japan.”
“And?” Jerrica huffed.
“And, Rio was living and working in Japan. He was managing a modeling agency, except it wasn’t very high class. It’s rumored that it was really a front for all kinds of illicit activities. Anyway, Rio hasn’t been seen for months and the agency is closed.”
“What about this Duela Dent person?”
“Now, this is where it gets interesting. Duela Dent was supposedly murdered years ago by some interplanetary bad guy. But according to my friend, Duela Dent is alive and well and living in Japan. She’s the CEO of the Queen Joker novelty company. It’s the largest novelty company in Asia. There’s no connection between the modeling agency and Miss Dent’s company. I also couldn’t find that Rio had any contact with Ms. Dent.”
“”Curiouser and curiouser” Jerrica mused.
“You got it Alice. I’ve got to go. Jerrica, please be careful with whatever you’re planning. I love you.”
“I love you too sis. And don’t worry.”
The sisters hung up and Jerrica sat at her desk going over what her sister had told her.
“Penny for your thoughts.” came a male voice.
“Scott! What are you doing here?” Jerrica said, a big smile taking over her face. He was wearing a long sleeve shirt with the sleeves rolled up and it was unbuttoned halfway, revealing a wife beater. It looked like he was wearing a rosary as well. His brownish-blonde hair shined. Jeans that looked like they cost a couple of hundred dollars completed his look.
“You look like you just got off the runway.” She said, getting up to greet him.
“Nah, just lunch with my mom.”
“Oh. About that…I’m so sorry. She must think I’m awful.
“Just the opposite.” Scott said, sitting down in a leather chair. “My mom flipped when I told her about you. Anyway, that’s not why I’m here. My mom totally abused her power and contacted some old friends. I found out all kinds of stuff about Rio--and Duela Dent! You ever been to Japan?” he said with a wink.
“You did that for me?” Jerrica asked.
“Well, yeah….yeah I did. I could tell that this whole thing really got to you. I wanted to help. I didn’t mean to overstep or intrude.”
Jerrica didn’t say a word about her conversation with her sister. She simply smiled and said, “So, this invisible jet of yours…how fast can it get us to Japan?”

A couple of hours later…
Wonder Man and Jemstone landed in Japan. As they walked into the lobby of the Queen Joker Novelty Company, the receptionist looked up and gasped. She was Japanese but spoke with a British accent.
Oh! Wonder Man and Jem! I…oh my! My kids will go nuts when I tell them you were here! Can I take a picture! Will you sign an autograph!?”
After the picture taking and autograph signing, the receptionist left the two of them in the lobby to let Duela know of her visitors. Wonder Man and Jemstone looked around the lobby which was surprisingly very plain.
“Knowing what my aunt has told me about Duela, I expected this place to look like Mardi Gras on acid.” he whispered to Jemstone.
The receptionist ushered the heroes into Duela Dent’s office and shut the door.
Sitting at a desk in an oversized red leather chair was Duela Dent. Behind her was a gigantic painting of Duela as the Harlequin. The office was very 70s retro and Jemstone noticed a framed photo of Duela and the original Teen Titans.
“Jemstone. Wonder Man. Welcome to Japan. I don’t get many visitors anymore.” Duela extended her hand in friendship. She didn’t look a day over 30 and her hair was cut in a stylish blunt cut and she was wearing a kimono. “Would you like some tea?” she asked in a warm, rich voice.
“That would be nice. Thank you.” Jemstone replied.
“I had all your records, you know. I used to love to turn them up really loud and just party and go wild.” Duela said, pouring tea.
“Miss Dent, I don’t mean to be rude, but you’re so young looking. Not much older than me. My Aunt Donna told me--”Wonder Man started.
‘Donna! Oh how is she! She was always so kind to me. Speedy, on the other hand, gave me such a hard time. What a jack @$$ he was!” Duela said as her face lit up.
“She’s great.“ Wonder Man replied.
“That’s nice. Really nice. I heard about all the bad stuff that happened with Terry and her son.” Duela said, her eyes twinkling.
‘Miss Dent?” Wonder Man asked.
“Duela, sweetie, it’s Duela.”
“Duela. What happened to you? I thought you were murdered by one of the Monitors years ago.”
“Ah, at last it rears its ugly head. The mystery of Duela Dent and what became of her. You must have inherited your aunt’s uncanny ability--I can’t help but feel I can trust you. Listen closely kids! The ugly truth will be revealed to you at last!”
