Action Comics 283 - 284
#283 - 'The six Red K perils of Supergirl' / 'The Strange Bodies of Supergirl'
Superman goes off to the future, and the Danvers clan goes on a trip, so Linda finds herself alone and bored, so she decides, since she's immune, she will go hunting Kryptonite to get rid of. She find 6 Red K meteorites and smashes them together first, then atomizes them, only to find when she gets back to Earth, they still effect her! Four of those effects happen in this first story, interrupting a date with Dick Malverne (Which is funny, but so cringy to a modern reader).
Among the other problems are having 2 heads, turning into a werewolf, shrinking down, and turning into a mermaid. The part where she turns into a mermaid she visits Atlantis and gets a marriage proposal from Jerro (just hours after 2 dates with Dick Malverne).. she says 'maybe'.
The bits where her date gets interrupted are hilarious.. she sends her robot to take her place on the date, that spies on it the whole time. thinking she's jealous of the robot. That's not the most cringy part though... while at the movies she pretends to be scared so she can cuddle, while thinking she's faced far more scary things than the movie shows.
Them there's an 'illusion' where she thinks she has 'death vision' and kills her foster parents and Krypto, which she tries to run away (instead of just closing her eyes)...it's kinda like 'Super Dickery' just for the reader.
After all that, Superman comes back and announces it's time to reveal Supergirl to the world... next issue!
Action Comics #285
'World's Greatest Super heroine, Part 1' and 'The infinite Monster, Part 2'
Yes, it's weird they call it a two part story with different titles, but this is a big one.... Supergirl gets the whole magazine! In the first part, Superman tells Kara they'll talk to the Danvers' at 9 PM, then the world. Why 9 PM? I guess so Superman can 'patrol'. Why does Superman need to patrol when he can see from wherever he is and is Superfast? Great question!
Anyway, while Linda's waiting, her step parents almost die as the drive over a bridge that collapses... Linda saves them and reveals herself early, then in a really heart wrenching moment thinks Superman surely will call the whole thing off because she disobeyed him to save them, but he quickly shows up and tells he it's fine. The rest of the of the episode is everyone celebrating her awesomeness.. from Kennedy, to Atlantis (no mention of the marriage proposal) to Kandor to the rest of the Galaxy, even the Legion. Pretty fun stuff, though once again it seems clear that in at least the pages of Action Comics, there are no other superheroes.. it's kinda odd.
The other odd thing is they show Lex Luthor's reaction from prison, and he calls off an escape attempt.. shouldn't he still think Supergirl is evil? I guess we won't worry about that (especially considering next issue's title..)
IN part 2, Superman goes off on a mission, and Supergirl is in charge of the Earth's safety for the first time. Some scientists manage to bring a giant invinsible monster to Earth from another dimension (maybe NOT do that experiment when Superman is away?) and after some hand wringing, the US government calls Supergirl, who has to interrupt another date with Dick Malverne to go save the day. She actually traps him in a fun house maze to get away, so it seems she's now graduated into her own form of Super Dickery.
Anyway, the monster turns out to be unstoppable, so she sends a message to the Legion for help.. the answer her right away and she builds a shrink ray to make the monster ant sized and saves the day. President and Mrs. Kennedy thank her personally!
It is a little disturbing that she puts the now pint-sized creature in a bottle to keep as a trophy.... especially since it didn't actually attack anyone or anything, it just sort of walked around and smooshed things by accident... I guess we won't worry about that either
