JSA Roll Call
Slaughter Swamp, on the outskirts of Gotham City (1944)
Justice Society member Jay Garrick leaned over and picked up a small plastic object laying in the marsh. He wiped the mud off of the pink barrette and held it up grimly toward his levitating companion.
“Why did those idiots have to come to a place like Slaughter Swamp so soon after the incident with the Nazis and the airplane crash?” exclaimed the Green Lantern bitterly.
“Don’t lose hope, Alan,” said the Flash, “They may still be alive. Let’s keep searching.” Jay knew that his teammate blamed himself for not following up on his battle with Solomon Grundy in Slaughter Swamp last week. The Emerald Guardian had deceived the swamp monster into standing on the railroad tracks until he was hit by a freight train. They had hoped that was the last that they would ever hear of Solomon Grundy, but no body had ever been found.
“You’re right, of course,” agreed the engineer. “Can you go check and see if the others have found anything?”
“Sure thing! I’ll be back in a flash!” said the scientist.
The scarlet speedster was gone no more than two seconds when he returned in a state of panic. “Alan! Quick! It’s him!”
The brave and bold duo sped off to another section of the swamp where a battle was already in progress.
“Terrific, get back!” ordered the winged chairman of the Justice Society of America as he swung a mace with all of his might.
“ARRRRRRRGH! Grundy hate birdman! Grundy kill birdman!” vowed the gray skinned zombie.
Mr. Terrific, already covered in mud, did a summersault to position himself behind the monster. He had once contemplated suicide as an alternative to boredom, but chose to dedicate his life to helping victims of injustice. The red and green clad hero had no special powers, but still he bravely jumped on Solomon Grundy’s back.
“Masked man am mosquito on Grundy’s back! Get off Grundy’s back, Mosquito Man! Get out of Grundy’s Swamp!” Then the swamp monster noticed the verdant glow in the sky.
“Green Man! Grundy HATE Green Man! Grundy kill Green Man!” shouted the enraged monster as he slammed the body of Mr. Terrific into the mace of Hawkman.
Past experience taught Alan Scott that a direct attack with his power ring would be ineffective against the swamp creature. Suddenly, a giant shovel unearthed a large portion of the earth beneath Solomon Grundy’s feet. Soon the swamp creature found itself forty foot in the sky.
“I’ll take it from here,” said the Flash as he created a cushion of air beneath the monster in order to ensure that he stayed in the sky.
Then Wonder Woman and Starman arrived. Green Lantern’s countenance fell as he gazed upon the three lifeless bodies in their arms. “We were too late,” he said bitterly.
Suddenly, a man gaudily clothed man appeared in the sky. He aimed a futuristic device towards bright towards Solomon Grundy and both the villain and the monster instantly vanished. Before the members of the JSA could react, a large, spherical object appeared in the sky and descended to the swamp.
“Be ready for anything,” warned the Queen of the Amazons as she brandished her sword.
The time sphere settled on the ground and a doorway opened. Two males and a female exited the strange vehicle. “Greetings, from the Legion of Super-heroes,” said the raven-haired beauty dressed in white.
“My name is Lightning Lad,” said the red-headed leader as he extended his hand towards the Flash. “This is Phantom Girl and Colossal Boy. We come here from the future.”
“A dangerous man who goes by the name Chronos has come upon technology, which could destroy the very fabric of time itself in the wrong hands,” said Colossal Boy.
“Would this Chronos happen to be dressed in green, red, and yellow with a white mask?” asked Hawkman.
“Because you’re a little late,” added Starman, “he just left and he took Solomon Grundy with him.”
“Oh, no!” exclaimed Phantom Girl. “Its just as we suspected. He is putting together an army to protect himself while he tortures that super-heroine. If his tests are successful, he may very well destroy history.”
“He’s torturing a super-heroine?” asked the Flash.
“Yes,” said Lightning Lad, “but I am afraid we don’t have time to explain. We have to hurry before its too late.”
“It’s too late for these three,” said Green Lantern as he looked at the bodies of the family that Solomon Grundy mutilated, “but maybe its not to late to help this girl you speak of. I’m coming with you.”
“As am I,” said Queen Hippolyta boldly.
“Alright,” agreed Lightning Lad, “We have room to take only four of you though.”
“Jay, you stay here and get Terrific some help,” ordered Hawkman.
“I’ll be fine,” said Terry Sloane as he limped towards the JSA chairman.
“Mr. Stubborn and I will pay a visit to Dr. Mid-Nite,” said the Flash.
Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Hawkman, and Starman joined the Legion of Super-heroes in their time machine. Jay Garrick removed his hat out of respect as the futuristic vehicle disappeared.
“Godspeed,” whispered the young scientist.
“Amen,” added Mr. Terrific.
New Venice, Florida (35 years ago)
JLA Roll Call
The citizens of New Venice had enjoyed peace for the years in which Aquaman had protected their city. The calm of the sub-tropical coast city continued even after the aquatic warrior moved back to his original home of the fabled underwater city of Atlantis. However, shrieks of terror once again echoed through the streets of New Venice as a horrifying menace levitated several hundred feet above Main Street.
Thwip! A coil wrapped around the ankles of Dr. Polaris. A blonde man dressed as Robin Hood anchored the line attatched to the coil.
“I wouldn’t advise moving anytime soon,” shouted Green Arrow to the magnetic villain. “All I have to do is push this little button here and your polar-heiney is fried!”
Dr. Polaris tossed his head back in the air with a deep laugh as the force surrounding the villain glowed brighter. Four vehicles from the parking lot Green Arrow stood in rose forty feet into the sky.
“Arrow! Look out!” shouted Green Lantern Hal Jordan as an emerald beam burst forth from the ring of the flying hero. A giant sphere instantly appeared around the quartet of hovering vehicles. As quickly as the Green Lantern solved the problem two vans began hovering in the air.
Seeing that both vehicles were empty, a raven-haired beauty shouted, “Srac emoceb niamrahc!” Rolls of toilet paper began raining on the parking lot of the bank below.
“Great work, Zatanna!” cheered Aquaman as he removed the cap off of a nearby fire hydrant with his bare hands. Green Lantern concentrated and a green funnel appeared on the fire hydrant, directing its gushing waters skyward towards Dr. Polaris.
Green Arrow snickered at the sight Dr. Polaris’ surprise at the sudden shower from below. The attack of the Justice League had caused the blue and violet clad villain to descend to a mere twenty feet above the ground.
Arriving on the scene, the Black Canary parked her motorcycle and braced herself. Nodding to her teammates in a warning to protect their ears, the blonde bombshell drew a deep breath and screamed.
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SMAK! Dr. Polaris was blown into the side of a nearby building.
Before anyone could react the time-villain Chronos appeared and aimed a futuristic device at Dr. Polaris.
ZZZZZZZZZZZAP! Chronos floated dumbfounded. He couldn’t believe that before his very eyes his stolen gadget from the future turned into a glob of Vaseline. He looked up to see the hero known as Firestorm smirking at him.
“Nobody messes with the Justice League,” said Black Canary as a giant hand from Green Lantern’s power ring whisked Dr. Polaris away.
Beads of sweat began trickling out of Chronos’ white mask as he noted how many members of the JLA had arrived at the scene. He quickly shot a blast at Green Arrow’s leg for a diversion and disappeared.
“AAAGHHHH!!!!!!!” shouted the emerald archer. Black Canary sped toward her beau to look at his injury.
The remaining four Justice Leaguers gasped in awe as a spherical vehicle appeared in the sky above.
“It looks like its gonna be one of those days,” commented Firestorm.
Zatanna and Aquaman both braced themselves for a major battle.
“Wait a minute,” said Green Lantern with his hand stretched out to his teammates. “I don’t think this is a threat.”
Firestorm looked strangely at the intergalactic policeman, but refrained himself from attacking. A doorway opened in the time vehicle and three uniformed beings exited.
“Hello, friends,” greeted an American Indian lady with wings, “I am Dawnstar of the Legion of Super-heroes. We mean you know harm. My companions are Shadow Lass and Timber Wolf.”
“We are trying to prevent a dangerous time villain from destroying the fabric of time,” added Shadow Lass.”
“His name is Chronos,” said Timber Wolf. “We followed his chronal energy trail here. We are concerned that he may try to recruit villains from this era for his cause.”
“Yeah, well Chrone-clown is already gone,” said Firestorm.
“We sent him ‘kay-yaiking’ home with his tail between his legs,” boasted Green Arrow as Black Canary continued to massage the bowman’s leg.
“Apparently, he was trying to recruit Dr. Polaris,” noted Zatanna.
“Perhaps we can offer our assistance?” offered Green Lantern.
Timber Wolf and Dawn Star looked at one another in hesitation.
“We could use all the help we can get,” said Shadow Lass, “and it would be a great honor to work side-by-side with the legendary Justice League of America.
“They do have a stake in this,” whispered Timber Wolf to his female companions.
“Very well,” said Dawnstar as she gestured for the JLAers to board their ship.
“I’ll stay here and take care of G.A., said Black Canary,” as Zatanna, Firestorm, Aquaman, and Green Lantern all entered the time vehicle.
Oliver Queen cupped his hands over his eyes as his teammates and the three strangers vanished in a brilliant white light.
“Now, this is a perfect example of why I don’t want to have kids,” said Dinah Lance. “This job is just too dangerous!”
Themyscira (One Year Ago)
“Man’s world has no idea of the splendors of Paradise Island,” thought Bonda as she gazed at the pink, lavender, and orange painted sky to the west. The Amazonian guard thought of the unworthiness of her newly assigned prisoner to be privileged to view such beauty, even from her cell. Queen Diana herself had explained to Bonda that no prison in Man’s world was secure enough to hold Fausta. The strong warrior understood that in protecting the outside world by watching this Nazi prisoner she was both honoring and protecting the island state of Themyscira..
“At least this Nazi pig from Man’s world is a female,” thought Bonda as she glanced at Fausta in disgust. The lovely woman shuddered in disgust at the thought of a man on Paradise Island.
[glow=yellow,2,300]BZZZZZZZZZZZT!!!!!!!!! [/glow] Bonda’s unconscious form slumped to the ground as the result of the electrical charge from the foreign instrument held by the man standing directly behind her.
Fausta looked in alarm at the man dressed as a clown standing before her.
“Shhhhhhhh….” warned Chronos with his index finger pressed against his lips. “I’ll set you free if you’ll help me.”
“Why should I help you?” demanded the imprisoned Nazi.
“I’ve come back in time to recruit help. Heroes from several ages have banded together to change the future. The Justice Society…the Justice League…even the Titans of Justice…” began the time villain.
“The Justice Society!?!” asked an enraged Fausta.
“They have changed the future,” whispered Chronos in feigned desperation. “Racial equality and brotherhood now runs rampant. The superior race has all but been forgotten in the future.”
Fausta listened intently as the stranger continued his plea with a shaky voice. “I need your help,” he said. “Come with me. Maybe together we can save the future.”
The strong blonde woman thought but a moment before nodding her head. “I will gladly join your noble cause!” A radiant light burst forth from Chronos’ time belt and both villains were gone.
