I sort of moved on from being a Star Wars fan in my teen years, so I haven't read much. I have read the Dark Empire books simply because I love Cam Kennedy's art. I'm a massive fan of John Ostrander's work, but could never really bring myself to read his various SW series. I'm also a huge fan of Al Williamson's art, but never sought out his SW stuff.

I'm pretty into Star Wars (hence the name) but to be honest I've never dug into the comics or Expanded Universe other than the occasional videogame. Don't like the prequels either. What are the best of the best Star Wars comics out there?

Yeah, it was not great. I don' recall any think glaringly terrible about it, but it was pretty meh. It focuses on organized crime in the Empire, IIRC, and the Empire's interactions with it. Yeah the Empire dealings with the Black Sun run by Prince Xizor. The few issues I read also featured the Rogue Squadron and Boba Fett's journey with Han Solo frozen in Carbonite. I'm pretty into Star Wars (hence the name) but to be honest I've never dug into the comics or Expanded Universe other than the occasional videogame. Don't like the prequels either. What are the best of the best Star Wars comics out there? I would say that the Thrawn Trilogy (Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, The Last Command) is a must. Either the novels or the comics. It occurs right after Return of the Jedi and introduces Luke's future wife Mara Jade as well as one of the best villains of the EU Grand Admiral Thrawn. I'm actually rereading it today.

I'm not super-widely read in Star Wars comics, but my favorite is actually the newspaper strip material. Dark Horse reprinted it in the 90s under the imprint "Classic Star Wars." I also like the all-humor issue of "Star Wars Tales" they did once... like 80 pages of funny stuff.

I, like most, hated the prequels. I never liked the expanded, post-Return of the Jedi, material either; clone Palpatine, Yuzang Vong, etc. I did love the Knights of the Old Republic game, though. It was the one bright spot during the prequel era.

Yeah, I read and enjoyed these back when they were the only Star Wars novels out there since the ones that were released while the films were out (which were the three film adaptions, three Han Solo novels, three Lando books, and Splinter of the Mind's Eye). Then there were three Kevin J Anderson novels, which were okay but really not very good... then the floodgates really opened and they started releasing tons of crap. I read a couple X-Wing paperbacks and one more novel about Han & Leia before I just gave up. Actually, I think the Lando novels are my favorite. All three are available in one paperback via amazon etc...

I haven't played the video game but are the The Force Unleashed graphic novels worth reading?

I've never read the original Marvel run and when I was a kid I just didn't see the appeal for some reason. For shame, for shame. Trust me, you missed out. Of the Marvel series, that series was at its best between the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. I would agree with this in principal, but I think that actually you could extend that golden period just past ROTJ. Say, up to about issue #86 or so. Issue #81, "Jawas of Doom", which is set the day after ROTJ, would be a strong contender for best issue of the entire run for me. There is some great stuff in the early part of the run too -- like the Aduba-3 storyline in issues #7 - #10, the return to Tatooine story arc in issues #31 and #32, and the Herb Trimpe penciled issue #17, which focuses on Luke Skywalker's life shortly before the events of the first movie. I'm not super-widely read in Star Wars comics, but my favorite is actually the newspaper strip material. Dark Horse reprinted it in the 90s under the imprint "Classic Star Wars." Agreed, the newspaper strip was pretty good when Russ Manning was writing and drawing it, but it went on to be amazingly good when Al Williamson and Archie Goodwin took over between 1981 and 1984.

Seems like a silly omission to me.

Well it is the first volume, those things may appear in a second (or third) Omninbus collection of Marvel Star Wars Material. I would guess there would be 3 based on the number of issue collected here, but the third would be a tad small,s o they may use that material to flesh it out.

True, but it would've been nicer to have had it slotted inbetween the issues from the same time frame. Like, in the second Fantastic Four Omnibus they have the Fantastic Four themed issue of Not Brand Echh! slotted in next to the issue of the regular title that came out that same month. If you're right, they might also include some of the Marvel UK exclusive stories that the likes of Alan Moore wrote in that third volume.

I'd be more excited if Keiron Gillen weren't writing the Vader book. I've liked things he's done here and there, but for the most part mostly his creator owned stuff. His other stuff is often a miss for me. Aaron on the main book and Waid on the Leia mini, I do like though.
