Seems like we could use an all purpose Star Wars thread to talk about the various comic series. I've never read the original Marvel run and when I was a kid I just didn't see the appeal for some reason. I had read the Dark Empire Trilogy (Dark Empire I, Dark Empire II, Empire's End) but wasn't all that impressed by it. It wasn't until I read the comic adaptation of the Thrawn Trilogy (Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, The Last Command) that I got into Star Wars comics. I really enjoyed the first volume of Star Wars Legacy and Legacy War. Currently I'm enjoying the new volume of Star Wars Legacy as well as The Star Wars based on Lucas' original rough draft. I've thought about reading Knights Of The Old Republic but haven't had a chance yet. I've been hesitant to pick any of the other new Dark Horse series because of the property switching hands back to Marvel. Still I'd love hear people recommendations and I'm curious what comic runs and novels people think are essential reading.

I really liked Ostrander and Duursema's Star Wars Legacy. Their Dawn of the Jedi has some interesting things lorewise, but the characters in the first 2 TPBs were ciphers.
The Tag and Bink issues were fun.
Of the older Dark Horse series: I really liked the first Crimson Empire mini and several of the Knight of the Old Republic stories.
Of the Marvel series, that series was at its best between the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

I am surprisingly enjoying Brian Wood's Star Wars, but the recent Star Wars comic I enjoyed the most were the 2 Agent of Empire minis by John Ostrander, kind of a Bond Star Wars mash up but fun adventure comics.

I also liked the Agent of the Empire series. Too bad Johan Cross will probably never see the light of day again. Nearly all my Star Wars comics take place in the Original Trilogy Era. Wood's Star Wars is one of my favorite series out right now and Marvel has a very tough act to follow.

I've enjoyed quite a bit of the Dark Horse stuff. I think my favorite was the 'Star Wars: Republic' stuff (mostly by Ostrander) with Kai Ai-Mundi and QUinlan Vos. His early tales of the Jedi stuff was also really good (but I haven't read that in ages). I agree Wood's current series is surprisingly good. I Never got in to the far long the time line Legacy stuff.

I read the original comic with art by Howard Chaykin when it came out. Is it possible that I read it before the movie came out? That's how I remember it, but it doesn't seem to make any sense that they'd give the story away in a comic before anyone had seen the film.

Well Jabba was a humanoid not a slug in the original script, and the deleted scene of Han talking to Jabba had to have a lot of effects added when they added it back in to the Special Edition. Here's a still of Han with Jabba as conceiived circa pre-'77 when hey were filming -M

That makes more sense. I don't have them any more, but I remember liking the comic and being pretty excited about the movie. At the time it seemed as if there had been a drought of really good SF movies since the early 70s, IIRC.

Has anyone read Shadows of the Empire (the story that occurs between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi)? I read two of the comics that came with the action figures but never tracked down the other issues. I know that they released a TPB, a novel and a sequel (Shadows of the Empire - Evolution) and I'm wondering if them are worth checking out.

I don' recall any think glaringly terrible about it, but it was pretty meh. It focuses on organized crime in the Empire, IIRC, and the Empire's interactions with it.

There's a Dark Horse timeline that I really found useful for finding out when certain Star Wars comics occur. www.darkhorse.com/Zones/StarWars/TimelineAnother mini series I enjoyed was Mara Jade By the Emperor's Hand. Does anyone know what are the good stories featuring Han and Leia's adult children? Of the older Dark Horse series: I really liked the first Crimson Empire mini I read the first Crimson Empire TPB but not the sequels. I thought it was better than the Dark Empire trilogy (which occurs right before Crimson Empire). The final duel between Kir Kanos and Carnor Jax was particularly good. Even without the use of lightsabers it was pretty satisfying.

I haven't read a lot of Star Wars comics. I have a few of the Chaykin issues and read some of the Dark Horse stuff. I really like Vader's Quest (by Gibbons and McKie), Dark Empire (Cam Kennedy one), Tag & Bink Are Dead, and some of the X-Wing Rogue Squadron, especially the Baron Fey mini... so freaking good.
