In a wretched hive of scum and villainy…
“ Never have I seen a more wretched hive of scum and villainy”.
He has heard these words before, but for the life of him he cannot remember where. But never have these words rang more truer than with the description of this place. Except for this particular establishment, the small border town he rode into was virtually deserted.
The horses were tethered next to land speeders, which seemed fairly out of place next to the large blue, crystal dragon. Which seemed to stare at him and snort as he walked past..
“Must be a tourist” he mumbled to himself,” Always trying to show off.”.
He adjusted his goggles over his mask, and straightened out his long duster. Giving his two Colt six shooters one final ammo check, he tipped the brim of his hat and polished the star on his chest. His spurs made a little tinkling noise as he walked up the short flight of steps to the saloon door.
“Showtime” he mumbled again as he reached for the swinging door. As he attempted to step in, he was nearly blindsided by a large chalk white figure clad in black leather, who was being forcibly ejected by a large glowing green hand. Landing on the dirt road in a rather unceremonious pile.
The large figure stood up and dusted himself off. With the swaying stagger of one who had had a few too many, he threw a rude gesture towards the door and began to shout.
“Frag you, ya bastich! I’ve been kicked outta better places than this!” Regaining his composure slightly, he then looked at the stranger with a look of slight shock.
“Wadda you lookin’ at?!?!” he bellowed “ IS dis how ya let them treat decent law abidin’ citizens sheriff? Why I got half a mind…”
“ You’re right Lobo” the stranger said cutting him off “ You do have half a mind.”
“ Now hit the bricks before I run you in” commanded the stranger.
“ Awright sheriff Geez! I don’t want no trouble” he said as he turned a way grumbling.
The stranger smiled a smile of silent satisfaction as he watched the pale bohemuth stumble away. Respect, respect for his position is all he ever needed. He is the sheriff after all, and he is the law.
AS he stepped through the door the music stopped, the voices went silent and all eyes focused on him. This happened every time he came here, and it was something that he was now used to. The music and conversations continued as he made his way to the bar. A rough looking man with a red sugar bowl haircut leaned over from behind the bar.
“ What will you have Sheriff? On the house as usual” the Bartender said.
“ Gimme a beer Guy” the Sheriff nodded “ Two actually. One for me , one for whoever tossed Lobo out on his a$$”.
“ Here you go” the bartender responded pouring two mugs, “ The man you want is at the table in the back.”
Handing the sheriff the two mugs he added ”He just got into town a little while ago, seems he’s been asking about you”
“ Really?” the Sheriff said with a smirk “ This I must investigate.”
He walked to the dimly lit back table, passing any and all manner of tough looking creatures. They all gave him a wide berth. Villains were a cowardly and superstitious lot, and they knew the Sheriff was not a man to be trifled with.
“ Evening stranger” welcomed the Sheriff to the man who’s face was obscured by the shadows.” Seems I owe you a debt of gratitude for taking care of business a little while ago.”
“ You’re welcome Sheriff” the Dark Figure replied “You seem to have saved me the trouble of looking for you”.
He recognized the voice, but couldn’t quite place it. As he set the mugs down on the table he questioned the man.
“ You seem to have me at a disadvantage sir. Have we met?” he asked.
“ Of course we have sheriff” the dark figure said as he reached for his mug. When the Sheriff looked down he noticed a white glove with a very distinctive green ring.
“ Hal?” The sheriff asked “ Is that you?”
“ In the flesh” The stranger said leaning into the light. His distinctive green mask flashing under his large brimmed hat. His face was adorned with a familiar smirk.
“What are you doing here?” The Sheriff said with a gleeful smile” I would have rolled out the red carpet.”
“ I know.” Said the green clad stranger “ That’s why I decided to keep this low profile. Well, at least until Lobo got riled up.”
“ So what’s up Hal” inquired the Sheriff” If you’re not here for a social call, that cant be good.”
“ It’s not.” Hal said flatly “ I need you to come with me to Oa. A…person of interest…is asking to see you. He says he’ll talk to you and you only.”
The sheriff looked at the aging hero confusedly and asked “ Who?”
“ It’s better if you not know until we get there.” Came the reply “You can call it the last wish of a condemned man.”
The Sheriff was taken slightly aback at this revelation. He knew it had to be serious if they sent Hal Jordan to find him.
“ Well then, in that case, when do we leave?” He asked
“ As soon as you’re ready. “ Hal replied “ John’s waiting for us there.”
“ But you haven’t touched your beer” The sheriff pointed out
“ I know, I never really touch the stuff. I vaguely remember something about being an alcoholic, but any memory I had of it is gone now. Oh well, it’s probably nothing” Hal answered shrugging his shoulders” Let’s go”.
The journey to Oa was a blur, and before he realized it the Sheriff and Hal had reached the prisons of Oa. As they came upon the entrance to the Science-cell, it was flanked by two familiar faces. A large Stern looking black man he immediately recognized as John Stewart, and a youngish looking white man with spiked black hair and a mask vaguely reminiscent of a crab shell. Though they had never met, he could only assume that this was Kyle Rayner.
“ Is that hin?’ asked John bluntly.
“ That’s him.” replied Hal.” Scott Stone this is John Stewart and Kyle Rayner.”
“ Pleased to meet you both” He said shaking both of their hands in turn.
Kyle looked at the young hero quizically “ What’s with the cowboy outfit?” He asked.
“ What’s with the crab mask?” Came the reply.
“Okay, fair enough.” Replied Raynor “ Not a fan I see.”
“No, not really. I can’t say that I am.” explained Stone.
“ It’s okay” he sighed” I get that a lot.”
“Alrighty, if we can dispense with the pleasantries, we can get this over with.” Said Hal.
As they walked along the endless rows of cells, each one holding one of the most dangerous criminals the universe has ever seen, John Stewart began to speak.
“ You know the drill. When you go in there, I want you to know that you are dealing with the most dangerous being this universe has ever seen. He is certifiably insane and will kill you without a second thought. Do not touch the bars. Do not approach the bars. Do not hand him anything. You are not allowed any weapons. Any notes you need to take will have to be memorized as he is not allowed anything. Do not accept anything that he has to give you. He is not to be trusted. Do you understand?”
At the end of a long corridor, they came upon a lonely dark cell. In the center of the empty cell sat a chair. In the chair in a green straight jacket, sat a slight man with reddish colored skin, a pencil thin moustache, and a pronounced widows peak. The hate from his gaze shot daggers at everyone assembled.
“ He asked to speak to you alone.” Said Hal, “ We’ll be just down the corridor if you need us. I present to you Sinestro.”
“I’m sure he is perfectly aware of who I am Jordan. You, Stewart, and the alley rat may LEAVE now.” Commanded the villain with a slight sneer.
“ Why does he keep calling me that>” mumbled Kyle as the green clad trio began to leave. John was the last one out the door, before he exited he turned toward Sinestro and pointed.
“I mean it Sinestro. You **** with him, and I’m going to beat your red a$$ from here to Mogo. You got me?!”
“ Oh do relax Stewart, I merely wish to speak with him. What possible shenanigans could I get into whilst trussed up like a Christmas turkey.” Exclaimed Sinestro, cocking his head and raising an eyebrow.
“I still don’t like this Hal! That red b*stard can’t be trusted. He’s planning something I know it.” Growled John through gritted teeth, never taking his eyes off the red hued captive.
“ I know that. I don’t like it either, that’s why I’m not taking my eyes off of him. This was the only way he would co-operate.” Assured Hal grabbing his friend and all but having to push him out the door. “ He won’t hurt the kid. None of us will allow that.”
As the 3 heroes exited the 2 remaining men began to silently stare at each other, as if sizing each other up. The red man’s face twisted with a mild look of disappointment. Sinestro waited until the 3 were finally out of earshot before he began to speak.
“ Hrmm… I am not impressed.” said the villain coldly
“ Can the chatter, red, what do you want?” questioned the young hero. His agitation starting to get the better of him already.
“ Hmm… all business I see. I like that. But I am still unimpressed. I expected you to be …bigger.” He sneered
“ Everyone’s a critic.’ snapped Stone “ Just tell me what you want to tell me so I can get out of here.”
“ Want? What do I want? I want to be free from this wretched pit. I want to be back patrolling my sector again. I want the nice little house with the white picked fence. But those little blue hypocrites seem to have other plans.” He said with mock sincerity.
“ No you jackass, what do you want with ME?” he shouted angrily.
“ A smile came to Sinesrto’s lips.” I just wanted to meet you. You are going to be relatively famous very soon. And I won’t be there to see it.”
“ HUH?” the hero said confused, “ I’m gonna be what?”
“ Famous you simpleton. You see an old friend of mine once told me of several prophecies. Prophecies that your little blue masters don’t want you to know about.. Though the Guardians know of them, they have been stricken from the Book of Oa.. Only two beings in the known universe other than the Guardians remember them. Myself and Abin Sur. And unfortunately Abin Sur can no longer speak of them.” Explained Sinestro.
“ What the hell are you talking about? What prophecy? What the hell as this got to do with me?” he said as he shook his head in frustration.
“ Everything my boy, because I believe YOU are the one to cause it. You are the one who will continue my work long after I am gone. The prophecy is out there you just need to know where to look.” Sneered Sinestro.
“ Prophecy? Work? What the **** are you babbling about? I’m not going to do anything like you.” He yelled banging on the bars. Sinestro began to sweat, but he did not flinch. He sat back and calmly stared back with an all knowing smirk.
“Order my boy.” Laughed Sinestro, “ Yu are the one destined to bring order to the universe.”
“ Alright egghead, and just how the hell am I supposed to do that?” he questioned sarcastically?
“ By destroying the Guardians of course” he said as he began to laugh maniacally. He started to sweat profusely, and his eyes became bloodshot. Sinestro’s skin started to blotch and the veins in his temple started to throb. Stone could hear the other 3 running down the hallway towards him. He could hear them shouting at him to get back but he could not understand them. Transfixed and horrified at the same time. He saw Sinestro’s head begin to bulge and pulsate.
“ Good luck my boy, you are going to need it. Just ..remember...to ..keep ..your..temper” Sinestro screamed at him panting in between words. The sweat was now pouring out of his body.” I…only…regret…that.. I …won’t…be there…to …see..it.”
His maniacal laughter turned into a coughing fit. The other 3 lanterns arrived. Kyle grabbed Stone and held him back while Hal and John surrounded the cell entrance and tried to pry it open.
“ Jordan!” Sinestro screamed as Hal looked him in the eye. “ I will see you in HELL!!”
As Sinestro spat out his last words, red light began to pour out of his eyes, nose, ears and mouth. The light built up such intensity that it was nearly blinding. Pressure built up to the point that his head could no longer contain it, and exploded. Splattering the four Lanterns with gore and gray matter.
Scott Stone awoke with a scream. He sat bolt upright and noticed that he was still on his couch in his modest apartment, remote control in hand. The television buzzed, and he saw a commercial for an all night creature feature. It was then that he realized that it had all been just a dream. He clicked off the television, and sat there trembling trying to make sense of what just happened. As he sat there he noticed the tiny nicotine patch stuck to his arm, and quickly wrenched it off. Giving it a fling to the opposite side of the room.
“ Oh man. Quitting is gonna be a lot harder than I thought.”
His name is Scott Stone, Starman, and his dreams make no sense to him sometimes.
