Well, the NBA Phoenix Suns lived up to their local official title of being The Cinderella Team once more. Made it through the playoffs to face the Milwaukee Bucks and lost 4-2. No Title as champions again. Just another year for the almost there but never going all the way team😭

Say goodbye to the Cleveland Indians after this season, and say hello to the Cleveland Guardians moving forward. -M

They should've gone back to the Cleveland Spiders.

They should've gone back to the Cleveland Spiders. Right. Or the Naps. What a fugly logo. I guess they wanted to try to keep the meter and the sound of Indians? What are Clevelanders guarding anyway? The R and R Hall of Fame? Lake Erie? Siegel and Shuster's notebooks?

The R and R Hall of Fame? Lake Erie? Siegel and Shuster's notebooks? It refers to the Guardian (or Hope Memorial) Bridge in Cleveland. And they did a lot of research including reaching out to season ticket owners and other fans and the names that did the worse in that polling were The Spiders and other previous names of the franchise, which their customer base seemed to reject out of hand immediately. So they were damned if the did and damned if they didn't. The pressure was on from all the outside sources to change the name (and the economic pressure meant they pretty much had to change it if they wanted to have any merchandising revenue at all as most of the outside vendors were preparing to stop selling anything with the Chief Wahoo logo or bearing the name Indians in the near future), but their immediate customer base was opposed to pretty much any of the alternatives, so they drew on something in the Cleveland milieu in the form of the bridge and its unique sculptures. Here's a pic of the Hope Memorial Bridge and its "guardian"... -M

I guess Guardians is better than Big Dumb Statues. I think the face from the statue would be much better than that awful video game create-a-team logo.

Thanks for that info,@mrp. At least it will make some sense to the people of Cleveland, which is the group they have to please.
And it wasn't some bizarre singular noun, like the Cleveland Smog.
"Guardians" sounds like a name for a Gotham City team in a 1960s Batman comic.
Still a horrible generic logo. Are they guarding that baseball? Oy.
Better they should have had a little green guy with a bald head encircled by a tuft of white hair.
Will they automatically lose to teams with yellow uniforms?

I'm at work here in Columbus with a bunch of Indians fans, and they are all complaining about the Guardians name (they also preferred the Spiders), it's definitely the talk of the day. I call foul on the supposed research (pun intended!).

I am not sure if that is an official logo or a fan mock up. The lettering in the initial pick was released by the team via Twitter when they made the announcement. The logo was used by a local Cleveland affiliate when reporting the news-I thought it was official when I posted, but I haven't seen it used anywhere else, so it might just be something whipped up on the fly by the TV station staff.

Who'd've noticed if they hadn't said anyhting?

I call foul on the supposed research (pun intended!). The polls were sent to all the season ticket holders and were up on the team website for months for folks to voice their opinion. If people did not participate for whatever reason (and I am not an Indians fan nor follow anything Indians but I saw the link and headline for it for months on the Red Sox official MLB page and a couple of times on the ESPN MLB page, so they did put the word out there), then they lost their opportunity for their opinion to count and crying foul after the decision was made is, as far as I am concerned sour grapes. I neither like it not dislike it (though its far better than the other new pro team name revealed this week...The Kraken, blerch!) but I chose not to voice my opinion when it would have mattered, so it is what it is. -M

This reminds me of when they stood the NHL team up here back in 2000. There was actually a legit push for the "Mad Cows" which was the nickname for the old AHL affiliate the Columbus Chill (in fact, there was a "cow" alternate jersey sometimes worn to celebrate this). It spoke to a bit of a civic pride that it may be "cowtown" here, but why not have some fun with it.
In fairness, Mad Cows was too out there to really get adopted. But then they went with "Blue Jackets" with some far-fetched claim it tied into Civil War history of making Union uniforms. So much for the customer "research" back then, the name resonated with pretty much nobody.

It's the way of the world. -M
