The Boston Red Sox now have their own Jeter on their team Jeter Downs, infield prospect who they picked up in the Mookie Betts trade, is now on their major league roster May that magic name help you out This Jeter has hit .185 over 2 AAA seasons, and the only reason he was called up is that they had to trim down to 13 pitchers (they had been carrying 14) to meet MLB requirements, so had to call up a position player, and with both Arroyo (covid) and Kiki Hernandez (IL) out, they needed a back up infielder who could play 3 positions (2B, SS, 3B) and the only thing this Jeter has going for him is his glove and arm. He'll only be on the ML roster until Arroyo recovers form COVID (unless Kiki is ready to comeback first). Jeter will be back in AAA before he can finish a cup of coffee, and I am not sure he'll be one of the guys to get a look in September. He might have marginally more success than Derek Jeter did as an owner, but he will be no patch on Derek as a player. - Jeter Downs made his MLB debut tonight. 0-4 with 3 Ks and 5 LOB playing 3 to give Devers a night off in a 6-2 win. -M

You rooting against your own just because of the name? Meanwhile the Yanks roll along. Not steamrolling the opposition but still winning each series. 2 more HRs from Judge tonight and a game winning HR from catcher Jose Trevino, one of the biggest steals in this off-season trades The Yanks are in a crucial part of their schedule. 20 games with no breaks, all against the best teams in the AL {Toronto,Tampa Bay and Houston}. So far they are 7-2

Verdugo is a median level starter at best, Wong is at best a back up catcher and Downs has shown little promise since he arrived. On a team that was desperate for pitching depth and lacking pitching prospects, they traded away one of the best players to have emerged from their farm system this century and didn't net anything the team actually needed in return. -M

So the Sox current hot streak has led them to the third best record in the American League-and they are still 11 games behind the Yankees (who got no-hit tonight).
Meanwhile those other Sox of the palehose variety made headlines when it was revealed that Tony LaRussa and the training staff have told veterans not to run so fast to first base on routine outs because they have too many injuries. I never in all my life would have though to see a major league manager chastise his players for hustling outside of a bad parody movie like Major League.

I lost respect for Manager Tony La Russa as far back as his continual defense of Mark McGwire' streoid use

The All Blacks' build up to the first test against Ireland has been less than ideal with a COVID outbreak in the camp. The head coach and several members of the coaching team tested positive for COVID along with three players -- two midfielders and an outside back, the latter being try scoring sensation Will Jordan. The big news though is lock Scott Barrett being selected at 6, a move that backfired spectacularly in the World Cup semi against England. To be fair, there are some injuries influencing the selection, but the coaches are also enamored with the idea of having more size and physicality on the field. They want an extra lineout option since Ardie Savea is undersized at No.8, but this is what infuriates me about modern rugby. Scott Barrett, Sam Cane and Ardie Savea are three of New Zealand's better players, which is why the coaches want them on the field at the same time, but Barrett is a lock and Cane and Savea are both number 7s. The Irish backrow must be licking their lips at the prospect of taking on that All Black combination. Beauden Barrett was selected at 10, which personally I have no faith in. The All Blacks seem ripe for the picking. Ireland lost their midweek game to the Maori All Blacks, but I doubt that will have much bearing on the test match. Irish fans don't seem overly thrilled with their match day 23, either, but this is a weak All Blacks side. The only things in our favor are home field advantage and the possibility of a tired Irish team after a long Northern Hemisphere season. Not confident.

The Yankees made a minor trade today with a pitcher they DFA'd a few days ago. They are only receiving cash considerations-from The Pittsburgh Pirates. Let me repeat. They are getting cash from The Pittsburgh Pirates. Truly this is a wonderous season for the Yanks

Love this 1994 Fleer card (knew of the set, but not this specific one): Haven’t been in this topic much (I wish I could catch up with 234 pages). I am one of those Brits who likes baseball, NFL and NBA (never quite got into MLS or NHL). The MLB Europe Twitter account is a good account to follow; anyway, that Fleer card was mentioned in the latest issue of Beckett Baseball.

Ireland showed enough outside of the second quarter NZ blitz to show they can win the second test if they cut down on their errors. I will admit that the New Zealand backrow played better than expected. The result was somewhat of a surprise. The scoreline flattered the All Blacks a bit. I still feel that New Zealand gives the opposition too much possession. We live off turnover ball, and our attack thrives in broken play, but our losses in recent times have shown the folly of relying too much on turnover ball.

Well tonight's Sox-Yanks got so out of hand, the Sox had outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. pitching the final inning. On the night Rafael Devers got selected to the All Star team, he had to leave the game because he aggravated a sore back that caused him to miss 2 games earlier in the week, and on a day they placed another starter on the IL (Michael Wacha), the prospect they called up to spot start, Connor Seabold not only got rocked by the Yanks, but had to leave the game with forearm tightness and is probably headed to the IL himself.
Before this streak of games featuring 2 series each against the Yanks and Rays (14 games total) leading into he All Star Break started, I predicted the Sox would go 2-12 and end the first half back behind both the Rays and Jays in the standing. They're 1-4 to start and have players dropping like flies to the IL, are already behind the Rays and now tied with the Jays. They could be 20 games back of the Yanks before the All Star break starts. This is the Red Sox way, a putrid start followed by a sizzling hot steak to get you to hope again, and then another swoon. They've probably got one more streak in them in Aug/Sept just to get folks to keep the hope fires burning, but it will be too little too late for them to really be anything but first round fodder if they even make the playoffs. Rafe is amazing but playing injured again. JD Martinez and Bogey have looked like they are playing with one foot out the door and eyeing their next contract rather than playing to win this year in Boston, and their lack of pitching depth in the organization is being put on display for the whole league to see. Maybe Bloom can get some pitching depth by dealing off JD and Bogey by the deadline (I hate seeing Bogey leave but the Sox indicated they weren't going to give him market value to stay when they signed Story this offseason so it's pretty much a foregone conclusion he plays elsewhere next season), maybe Eovaldi too if he's healthy again as he's a free agent too. But they need to do something to address the pitching depth throughout the organization. way too many pitching prospects whos ceiling is back end starter or low leverage middle reliever, not enough potential high leverage relievers and front end starters.

Ish Kabbible Prince HalWelp Jeter Downs got called up for his second cup of coffee in the bigs today as more Sox found their way to the IL today and Devers is day to day with his back. I wonder what position player will wind up pitching for the Sox tonight? -M

He could be the next Joey Gallo
