The NBA today announced they are retiring the number 6 across the entire league in honor of Bill Russell. He is the first player to have his number retired across the entire NBA (MLB did this with Jackie Robinson's 42, but Iam not sure it has ever been done aside from these two players). Kudos to the NBA is honoring this legend. -M edit to add (unfortunately players already wearing #6 will be allowed to keep doing so (such as LeBron w/ the Lakers), but no new #6 will be issued on any of the 30 teams) It was the same when Robinson's #42 was retired, no new players could have that number but those who wore it before it was retired could continue to do so. Red Sox great Mo Vaughn wore it until 2003(with his sad end with the Mets), and Mariano Rivera of the Yankees wore his #42 all the way until 2013 when he retired. Come to think of it, I don't think any of the players who had #42 before it was retired opted to change numbers. I've said elsewhere, I didn't like it then, I don't like it now. A number is either retired or it isn't. Half-assing it is just a bad look to me. -M

Sometimes the clubhouse guys unofficially "retire" numbers for a while.

I know Vaughn and Rivera specifically had contact with Robinson's family because they felt they were honoring his legacy.

If the honor is saying the player is so special no one else can where it, each exception, no matter the reason, dilutes that idea of specialness. If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right. If it's not worth doing right, it's not worth doing. -M

Yankees continuing to play horribly these past 6 weeks. And yet somehow they still have a double digit game lead in their division. I've never seen a team that played so spectacularly well for half a season and so atrocious in the 2nd half (so far) It's really hard to believe that lineup can get shut out two consecutive nights. The game they beat the Sox in the previous series, they won it playing small ball. The Yanks problem since their last championship team is they build teams reliant on home runs to score, and sometimes they either get just solo shots which aren't enough to win, or go into mini-power droughts that lead to losing streaks. They don't fill the bases and churn through to put up big crooked numbers, so they become an all or nothing team, and when they get all, they are a juggernauts, but as seasons wear on, injuries, either big or small nagging ones, build up, and it gets harder and harder to win on 3 run homers every night. They win on paper in the offseason, they start strong and dominate the first 100 games of the season often, but by the time October hits they are either fading or already fading and come up short in the postseason, where it is especially hard to win waiting on 3 run homers. Again, it can be a scary line up, but if there's no one on base when they get the homers, or they get shut down by a quality pitcher, their a moribund offense and lose in bunches late in seasons. This isn't the first August swoon the Yanks have had since they won in '09. I still think they win the division, but I think they are out of the post-season before the ALCS unless they can find more ways to score and play more small ball. I thought they might be sustainable this season as they were stealing more bases and at lest trying to play some small ball, but as soon as injuries started in they reverted to the "wait for the 3 run blast mode" and the ubiquitous late season swoon swooped in. -M

Guessing it's September 29, 1985 (Thanks, Pro Football Reference!), because that's Steve Fuller at QB, no doubt in relief of Jim McMahon. Though why Payton was still in a 45-10 blowout is a mystery. He only ran the ball seven times for six yards, but did have a TD and 41 yardson a couple of catches.

The second NZ vs SA test was much better than the first, both for NZ and as a spectacle for us viewers (except for SA fans, I suppose). Strong effort by the All Blacks, they dominated most of the first half, something they hadn't been able to do in any the of the three Ireland games or the first SA match last week. And it was impressive that they did it with many of the same players, although there were a few key changes at certain positions. But some of the guys I thought did not have good showings the last several matches really made a statement this time: e.g. Sam Kane at no. 7, and the two centres, Habili and Ioane.
