Pirates sweep the Red Sox! Raise the Jolly Roger! Revenge at last for 1903? I'l cop to being an unabashed Sox fan, and I do like the Pirates and wish them well, but if you're fan base has to celebrate sweeping a last place sub-.500 team during September with expanded rosters, you're team hasn't had a whole lot to celebrate for a very long time then. If it had clinched a playoff spot, or division, had been a no hitter or perfect game, or put them back in first place, I can see getting excited, but you beat a team you were supposed to beat based on this year's records-that's not a cause for celebration, it's what you should be doing. Good teams expect success, they aren't surprised by it. I do hope the Pirates make the playoffs and fare well, but it's a case of act like you belong there -M

Oh, jesus. I can't believe it wasn't declared a national holiday. I'd like to invite everyone to stay tuned to this thread as Dan and I count down the days to the end of the Derek Jeter era of Baseball. We'll relive past moments of glory and reflect on the quality of his character that will forever reshape the future of humanity. Dan will provide eye-opening stats that will convince all that Mr Jeter should be installed into the Hall Of Fame immediately while I will endeavor to describe the impact to Western culture DJ has provided.Until next time......

When your teams' last back-to-back winning seasons were over 16 years ago you learn to celebrate the smalls things. Like tonight the Buckos were down 0-2 to the Brewers but came back in the 8th scoring 4 runs to win. In other news... the Penguins Unveil New Third Jersey look familiar?

I'm just grateful the Yank-mees aren't going to make the playoffs, so that I don't have to hear the national media fawning all over Captain Overrated and talking about how awesome it would be if He won another World Series in His final season. In 8 days from now, he will be done, gone, retired, finished, and then we can all focus on what a steaming hot mess the Bronx Bummers are; they have no pitching, they have no defense, and they have a bunch of guys in their 30's signed to long-term contracts in an era where, thanks to the reduction in PED use, players aren't being productive into their late 30's. It warms my heart to think that they have all that money tied up and because the Steinbrenner boys aren't as interested, unlike their old man, in winning championships as they are in making boatloads of cash, they are trying to stay under the luxury tax threshold desperately, which will limit what they can actually do in terms of signing free agents.
Oh, and A-Fraud is done with his suspension soon, meaning he will be back as a distraction for the franchise. It's a great time to be a Yankee hater, to be certain.

The deep dark despair of a Red Sux fan in the waning empty days of September. Knowing the final games of the season his Holiness, The Great Jeterino, will deign to visit the crumbling Fenway arena and the masses will rise to their feet, singing hosannas to the baseball gods in honor of the greatest shortstop who ever lived, nay not Rico Putridcelli, nay not the Normar Nomore-para. Praises will rise to the Boston sky from fans and players both for the Sainted one, The DJ-the baseball god who touched down to earth and regaled us for 2 decades. Remember those days, Sir Richard and pass them on to your kin. The days when the holiest of Yankee Warriors was blessed by the citizens of Beantown. Amen

Amen So is it Cal Ripken Jr. or Ozzie Smith who will be attending the game that they will be singing to? O r will they be summoning the shade of Honus Wagner... And I am pretty sure neither Dan nor Richard are part of Sox nation, Richard is a Pirates fan if I recall correctly. -M

The one where Michael Jordan attended too Jordan was just looking to get Jeter on a golf course where he could win that swanky Tampa mansion from him via a prop bet...he's pretty sure Jeter's drives would have more range left and right than Jeter did at short... -M

I do know Dan's a Baseball Think Tank fan Baseball Think Factory, actually, but I just post there like I do here. It's a message board just like this one, for all intents & purposes, & for that matter just as is my predominant practice here with regard to comics, most of my posts there aren't baseball-related; I'm a heck of a lot more likely to talk music, comics, fiction, politics, movies, etc. or just in general be an insufferable smart-ass ... again, just like here. ' I'm waaaaaaay nastier over there about Captain Herpes & his slavering sycophants, though. (I'm delighted to conclude that you don't post there as Captain Supporter or Yankee Clapper, BTW.) I'm only nominally a Red Sox fan, or at least was up until a few years ago, mainly from having had a Rico Petrocelli model as my first glove when I was 8 or so & loving the hell out of Luis Tiant when he came back from oblivion circa '72.

No, I have never been to their website. I pretty much get my fill of baseball news and opinion from the MLB site or the all-sports radio station here-WFAN and sometimes ESPN. But now I know I have an alternate destination when I have a need to read more smart-assery from that food-provider of the Gang of Five
