So it appears the Marlins will only be on the hook for $107 million of the $325 million of Stanton's contract before the opt out clause. So to get the big money he either has to get traded somewhere who will pay him the money or stay with the Marlins for the duration.

Sheesh. Did Stanton make any concessions?

Sheesh. Did Stanton make any concessions? Stanton wanted to Marlins to have flexibility early in the contract, so his annual salary those years is less than he would have likely gotten in arbitration for the first 3 ears of the deal. If he opts out, it becomes a much more friendly deal for the Marlins as they don't pay the bulk of it. -M

So, no.

So he gave up a lot of money to sign early and is taking less per annum for the early part of the contract than he could have gotten, but that's not a concession. And if he decides to use the opt out clause in 6 years to get out of Miami he gives up 2/3 of the money of the contract after playing for half the time of it, but that's not a concession? OK.

I guess forgoing arbitration is a concession since he makes way under market those years. I don't consider it much of one, but I'll agree with that.
Since he has the opt-out and a no-trade (is it absolute?), though, I don't see putting those 2/3 behind it as a concession at all.

Another shutout for Marc-Andre Fleury last night as the Pens defeat the Canadiens 4-0!

The Hot Stove seems to be heating up in Boston. Rumors coming in the Sox are about to finalize a deal to bring Hanley Ramirez back to Boston and are waiting on the answer of the Kung Fu Panda to their offer.
I am not sure how I feel about either of those signings. I know they have a need at third and want a left hand bat, so I understand the Sandoval offer even if I think he's going to be a shrinking violet in Boston. I just don't get the Hanley deal though. Where's he going to play if we do get Panda? You're not going to play him at short over Boegarts, and I doubt they will deal Xander, at least I hope not, I know they have Deven Marrero coming behind Boegarts but even so, they will regret trading Xander if they do. And Ramirez is a terrible shortstop defensively. So where do you put Ramirez-the outfield's already crowded even if they deal Cespedes as rumored. DH is locked. First is Napoli's domain...I mean I have heard left field if they trade Cespedes, but why..Cespedes has better power and arm even if Ramirez is lockjed up for a longer deal, but health has been an issue for Hanley and even though he says he will move form short, he has sulked and under-performed every time someone has tried it. These two moves smack of desperation rather than a plan for short and long term success with the club.

If Boston is really only offering an extra $5mil, I don't understand what Panda is doing. That's the kind of thing you do to get to a contender.
Hanley deal is dumb, but now I can come up with insane scenarios where St Louis gets Cespedes.

Just curious - How many of you want to see a Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao fight? ... I do.

I'd be intereated if they fought in a 10x10 ring with no round limit.

Mandatory death at the end for both, & preferably for everyone in attendance & watching on pay TV? Might be vaguely interesting, but probably not.
(Obviously, the fascination of bloodsport both eludes & repels me.)

And I should add the following, which I just made note of in the paranormal thread --
Apologies, BTW, if I'm coming off even more irascible as usual. I'm having to write a speech for someone to give at a banquet in DC next month. I'm no more a speechwriter than I am a quantum physicist.
