I actually was quite fascinated with boxing -- not only contemporary fighters but also those of the past -- during Ali's career.
But after that ... well, I changed, & so did boxing -- & in neither case for the better, I fear.

My interest in boxing lasted until the Tyson Hollyfield era, but that era killed any interest I had in it. I mostly watched it as a kid becaue my grandfather and father liked it, and I liked the Ali cartoon.

Congrats Red Sox, you've got the Panda. I really hoped the Giants could keep him but I knew it was a longshot. Sad to see him go, but wish him the best of luck. The Giants now have big shoes to fill at third base.
If any Boston fans need a Panda hat, I'm sure they'll be on discount in San Francisco. Incoming mass exodus of panda hats!

I've always been a big boxing fan, ever since reading about the first Ali-Frazier fight in our local newspaper. As a comic book reading kid, naturally I was cheering for Ali, who looked to me something like the perfectly sculpted superheroes I was used to seeing in comics, whereas Frazier just looked like a burly tough guy.
A few years later, it was Sugar Ray Leonard we all marvelled at. All his early fights were shown on tv, IIRC - I remember all us young guys talking about his latest fight the next day back then, how amazingly fast he was, etc.
I can understand Dan's distaste for it, though: with everything we know now about the long-term brain damage caused by concussions, or even blows to the head that don't cause any apparent immediate effect, it's hard to defend a sport where the whole POINT is to hit your opponent in the head as often and as hard as you can.
All the same, I still like to watch boxing and admire boxers for their athletic ability and for having to perform under a kind of pressure that I think is different from that of any other non-combat sport. And, it can't be denied, there must be some atavistic appeal to that side of human nature that's attracted to violence and conflict. Not proud of it, but it has to be part of what makes me a fan, since it's such a big part of what separates boxing from other sports.
Regarding Mayweather vs Pacquiao, I think the time for it might have passed. A few years ago I would have given Pacquiao a good shot at being the first guy to beat Mayweather, or at least being more competitive against him than anyone else has managed, but he seems to be fading a bit, while Mayweather's hasn't deteriorated noticeably.
However, I have to admit that I haven't seen the last few fights of either boxer, so this impression could be totally wrong. Pacquiao recently avenged one of the losses he suffered during the bad streak he went through a few years back (against Tim Bradley, was it? I haven't seen either of the two fights), so it could be that he still has enough left to make Pacquiao vs Mayweather a a good match. But I still remember my disappointment with Mosely/Mayweather - I had thought that Shane Mosely would give Mayweather all he could handle, and maybe he would have a few years earlier, but by the time they met Mosely was past his best and the result was yet another dull Mayweather victory, apart from one brief scare in I think the first round.

Even if Odell Backham Jr. had been there to take the ball away from Steve Bartman, the Cubs STILL would have blown it in the 9th.

It's unfortunate the Giants lost Pablo, but the writing was on the wall. A lot of fans on the main Giants forum are ticked regarding the message he left on his twitter handle, implying that San Francisco will always be #1 or something like that, yet he left for essentially the same kind of deal. The way I see it, it's hard to complain. He helped the Giants get three rings in five years, including their first ever in San Francisco. He can go get his mega payday. At first I was really disappointed, but then I thought that it's really hard to complain after three rings.

There was a really good ESPN documentary about the Steve Bartman incident called Catching Hell (2011) that's worth checking out. Most of their 30 for 30 series were pretty good.

Lester goes to Chitown, good luck with Theo and the gang big guy, and thanks for all the Sox memories. I can accept you wearing those stripes, as long as it wasn't Yankee blue. Who knows, maybe an L series in Chitown this fall the way the Pale Hose are going at it too.

And Mariota still has the chance to be a national champion. His stock could soar if that happens. I wonder what team he will be going to. My guess is Tampa.
