Those decisions probably won't be made by the NCAA going forward. They will be made by the five major football playing conferences. If the Power Five conferences gain more power, I could see more situations like recently happened at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, where they shut down their football program over increasing costs. I'm not saying it would be a bad thing, but I could see schools choosing one of two options:
1. Disbanding their programs, or; 2. Dropping down to the old I-AA level and competing there, where financial obligations for the program might not be so onerous.
While the trend recently has been for schools to step up from I-AA to I-A (eight schools in the past 5-7 years, IIRC), we might see schools dropping down a level in order to save money on scholarships, travel, etc. Honestly, what business do schools like New Mexico State, Troy, or Temple have putting I-A teams on the field, as they rarely ever have any level of success outside of the occasional Tier 4 bowl game the second week of December (which probably causes the school to lose money due to the ticket purchase requirements that the bowls have)?
Another potential consequence of smaller schools choosing either of the options above would be that the Power Five conference schools would schedule more non-conference games against one another rather than picking up a four-pack of cupcakes every September. Not every team would play a meat grinder schedule, but I'd much rather see the University of Pittsburgh play more schools like Iowa (which they did this year) than schools like Old Dominion (which they also played this year). The overall level of play would increase as well, because the lower-tier schools would not be trying to compete with the Power Five schools for players, so the better players would go to the bigger schools and the games would be more competitive; it would be fun to see an Iowa State or Wake Forest in the playoff discussion every now and then instead of the same teams we're going to get for the foreseeable future.
Sorry to go on and on about this topic, but outside of MLB, there is no sport I am more passionate about than college football.

Well, the Rose Bowl was a dud, with Oregon ending Florida State's 29-game winning streak by a score of 59-20.
What made me laugh was listening to the announcers near the end of the game. They were saying things like "who would have thought that Oregon would put up nearly 60 points on FSU" and "who would have imagined that FSU would only be able to put up 20 points on Oregon's defense".
Anyone who watched these teams this year aren't surprised by either of those things. Oregon's offense is ridiculously good, so them scoring that many points isn't a shocker, and FSU barely escaped in a number of games in the weakest of the Power Five conferences. Maybe if ESPN paid attention to teams outside the Eastern Time Zone, they would have realized that the Ducks are pretty good.

Oregon defeating Florida State by a score of 59-20; it's came to no surprise and Ohio State defeated in a thriller over Number 1 ranked Alabama by the 42-35 of which I was stunned by tenacity and the determination of Ohio State over the more favored Crimson Tide.
So, Oregon will be playing Ohio State in the National Championship Game and I see Oregon beating Ohio State by 2 touchdowns in that game. So, I say it will be 42 to 28 - Oregon. Just an Educated Guess.
Ducks Rules!

Once down 21-6, the farce wins by a touchdown in the most stunning upset since Villanova beat Georgetown in the 1985 NCAA basketball final. (maybe) Big 10... not horrible ...at least today If all 3 quarterbacks come back next season, who's the starter at Ohio State? Someone keep the sharp objects away from Paul Finebaum.

Well, color me shocked to wake up this morning only to find out that THE Ohio State University, with their third-string QB at the helm, managed to upset the mighty Alabama Crimson Tide. I went to bed at halftime (we'd stayed up well past midnight on New Year's Eve and I was dragging) and while it was a close game, I still felt confident that Alabama would pull away in the second half.
And this is why the playoff system is so far superior to the polls in determining the national champion; it's decided on the field. Upsets happen, bad games happen (FSU and their 5 turnovers), and the unpredictable nature of the game is allowed to play out, rather than relying on computer formulas and pollsters' "eye test" of each team. Hopefully they will expand the field to at least 8 teams next year, or 12 or 16 (and let's be honest, they'll do it once they realize how much MONEY they're going to make once the ratings for the two games yesterday and the championship game come in), and we'll get a playoff field that may have an unheralded team like TCU or Baylor or Georgia Tech get a series of lucky breaks or good games and wind up with the trophy.
As for the championship, I hope the Ducks win, because living so close to Ohio (and having a sister-in-law and niece who are big OSU fans), I really don't want to hear about how great the school is and how much they've had to overcome and how awesome Urban Meyer is. A curbstomp would be preferred, but as long as the Ducks finish with one more point than the Buckeyes, it will be just fine in my book.

Well, the Rose Bowl was a dud, with Oregon ending Florida State's 29-game winning streak by a score of 59-20. I disagree. The Rose Bowl was a great game. Oregon just stuck it to Florida State. It's nice to have a Pac-12 team instead of the overhyped SEC division going for the national title. While I'm not a Duck fan (I'm a UCLA guy), but its nice to see some push for the West Coast against all the East and Southeast homers.

Don't get me wrong. From an outcome standpoint, I was happy to see Oregon win, but the way in which they did it made watching the end of the game pretty pointless. It wasn't a competitive game, particularly once FSU gave up in the fourth quarter and stopped trying.

Four teams is a joke, and to those saying that it can't be done with more, they need only look at the former I-AA level where they have at least 12, possibly 16, teams and they are done before Christmas. It's 24 teams, and the title game is January 10. I like bowl games because you get a lot of match-ups that neither school would schedule pre-conference. An expanded playoff field would more than compensate, though. I wish they would put more incentive for schools to schedule real competition pre-conference, maybe by not counting non-FBS wins at all and only counting one non-AQ.

I probably would be okay with 8 depending on the format. Anything more than that is "everyone gets a ribbon" territory. If you don't win your conference you have no business playing for a national championship. Anything else means that conference championships are utterly meaningless. And no. I don't care that basketball, the NFL and everyone else has the crappy "wild-card" teams. Don't care one bit. The regular season and conference championships need to mean something. If it was up to me MLB would send the two teams with the best records directly to the World Series.

Sports fact of the day...
In 1939, in Evanston, Illinois, eight teams met in a tournament to determine the first NCAA basketball champion.
In the final Oregon defeated Ohio State 46-33.
Will history repeat itself?

If you're a Detroit fan, you have every right to be upset right now. My brother, a Cowboys fan, emails me "Jerry's check cleared just in time."

Defensive pass interference was the wrong call on the play. It should have been defensive holding and facemasking/illegal hands to the face (Pettigrew of the Lions grabbed and twisted the facemask of Hutchens prior to the ball arriving while both were clutching and grabbing) for offsetting penalties and the down should have been replayed. Even still, if Caldwell had gone for it on 4th and one, they probably would have made it and kept the drive alive, but he made a bad decision there in the wake of the blown call. There were actually 3 legitimate fouls on the play overall (Dez ran on the field without a helmet to protest the call) and Defensive PI was possible, but the least correct of the possible calls-however, not sure how it works but personal fouls (the facemask) sometime stand even in offsetting situations, but then so do deadball fouls (Dez's unsportsmanlike for coming on the field w/o a helmet), so not sure how it would have shook out if all the fouls on the play were called correctly, but Jerry Jones suggested replay for PI should be considered after the game, but in no way shape or form should just defensive PI been called on that play. officiating analysis-M
