The University won the national men's soccer title last week. The team has taken criticism from the sore losers at UCLA and elsewhere for playing a strategy more geared to defense. Is a low-scroing game really a scandal in soccer now? I thought that was the SOP...

The Bears will need to fire the owners, GM, the rest of the front office, the coach, his staff, the players, blow up the UFO looking Soldier Field and start over again.

This is the first time I've seen a list of the top ten vote-getters and it makes me wonder, how are the stats on Heisman winners? Do they end up becoming NFL stars pretty consistently or is it more of a crapshoot? Is the Heisman winner usually the 1st pick in the draft? And how do the other top-ten guys usually do?

Some have turned out to be all-time greats (Tony Dorsett, Marcus Allen, Barry Sanders), some have had long and successful careers (Vinny Testaverde, Tim Brown, Charles Woodson, Eddie George, Carson Palmer), some have had short careers with some success (Danny Wuerffel, Ron Dayne, Chris Weinke), and others either had brief stints or never played in the NFL (Jason White, Charlie Ward, Eric Crouch, Troy Smith, Tim Tebow). It's definitely a crapshoot. There are some guys who are great college players due to the system they play in or the team they have around them, but their skills just don't translate to the pro game. They are not always the #1 overall pick in the draft, because it depends on the needs of the team drafting there (if a team drafted a quarterback #1 last year, they would likely not take a quarterback, even the Heisman winner, first overall the following year). As far as the rest of the Top-10, I haven't done enough research, but I would guess that the success/failure rate is about the same as the winners.

fantastic finish from the first ever Bahamas Bowl
Central Michigan was down 49-14, scored 28 straight and then this happened...
They went for 2 and missed, losing the game to Western Kentucky 49-48.

Jim Harbaugh is gone. He's going to Michigan. It's official. As a Die-Hard 49er fan, this is a very sad day. Shows you what losing three consecutive Championships/Superbowl can do to a franchise. Also shows you what numbskulls the Yorks are. This franchise is going to tumble back into mediocrity for the next decade now.
I'm thankful for the Giants, three World Series in 5 years. But it's sad to see Harbaugh leave the 49ers. The only losers in 49ers fallout are the fans.

The myth of the greatness of SEC football got smacked in the chops today, as the "playoff unworthy" TCU Horned Frogs took the #9-ranked Mississippi Rebels behind the woodshed in the Peach Bowl to the tune of 42-3, with Mississippi only scoring on a field goal halfway through the 4th quarter. There was no point during the game, outside of the opening kickoff, where it looked like the Rebels belonged on the same field as TCU, so it's too bad we'll never know if TCU could have hung with the "Big Boys" who made the playoffs, although based on their performance the entire year, I'm going to guess they could have easily.
Unfortunately, my prediction about the outcome turned out to be wrong. Before the game began, I told my wife TCU would win by 40, while they wound up winning by just 39. I suck.

TCU may have been just a bad quarter against Baylor from the National Title. I still think the Playoff expands to 8 in the not too distant future. 5 Automatic bids for the major conference champions, 1 smaller conference wild card (in 2014 Boise St.) and 2 at large bids.

I completely agree with you. Four teams is a joke, and to those saying that it can't be done with more, they need only look at the former I-AA level where they have at least 12, possibly 16, teams and they are done before Christmas. What the NCAA needs to do is free itself from the bowl system for the playoff. If the local bowl committees want to continue to host the Piggly Wiggly Bowl or whatever other useless matchup between 6-6 teams on December 23 for the purpose of providing ESPN programming, that's fine, but the playoff should begin the weekend after the conference championship games and run three weeks with the championship game being played on a neutral site on New Year's Day. It would be an event as big as the Super Bowl and every one involved with it would make a ton of money. However, the NCAA is too stupid to get out of its own way, so they'll continue with this charade of putting the "four best teams" into the playoffs when they proved this year that they only wanted to put in the "four best TV draws", which can be the only explanation for how Ohio State made it. As a fan of one of Alabama's oldest rivals, it pains me to say that I am rooting for them, but I hope they beat the Buckeyes by 6 touchdowns and show what a farce this truly is. /end rant.

Those decisions probably won't be made by the NCAA going forward. They will be made by the five major football playing conferences.
In other notes...
That was the best Cotton Bowl comeback I ever saw that didn't involve Joe Montana.
LeBron James out two weeks with nagging injuries. Is the curse of Cleveland going to take him down too?
It's been terrible weather in Southern California this week, but then the Rose Bowl comes along and it looks perfect.
