 The 2013 Valiant Comics Preview Trading Card Set features 9 of the leading characters from the all-new Valiant Universe, plus one hand-drawn, color sketch card. These are the very first officially authorized Valiant sketch cards ever offered. Artists include Matt Glebe, Mick Glebe, Lak Lim, John Haun, Frank Kadar, Matias Streb, Jim Kyle and many more. This edition has been limited to only 500 sets. Didn't know this existed until accidently coming across it today. Nice group Valiant by Lewis Larosa and David Baron. |

I'm amazed ANYONE is making collectible non-sport non-gaming cards these days. Granted, Valiant had a trading card set back in the '90s and, also granted, this was a promotional stunt and not a product for sale, but still a pretty unusual choice.

They're still making them pretty regularly, actually. Marvel has a new set every year or two. They use the same (IMO) lousy model that sports cards do... small ,nearly valueless base set, slightly valuable 'insert sets', and super rare chase cards that no one but speculators want.
For comic cards, it's usually artist sketch cards, or autographs, rather than the game used stuff they use in sports cards.. similar concept though.
The cards are actually kinda nice in some cases, you just have to buy complied sets rather than collecting packs.. the packs are basically a lottery ticket to try to 'win' the rare stuff.
The last one I got was the Kree-Skrull War one, which had actual story pages (each group of nine cards made a page of a comic) that filled in some side lights the comic glossed over.
There's one that's just called 'Marvel' or 'World of Marvel' that had 3 series that's a good looking set I might get at some point, kinda comparable to the ones from the 90s.

The only comic card set I ever enjoyed was Marvel Universe Series II. I actually learned a lot from that set, as the cards contained a lot of useful information. Still have them somewhere. But buying sets instead of packs -- it just feels like cheating. The fun is in the hunt  I think I'm going to start a Marvel trading cards thread in the Avengers Mansion. |

Yeah, I agree with that! Sadly, that's not how it works anymore.. the packs for just about any trading cards are prohibitively expensive to do that nowadays... I just did it with this year's Topps Baseball, so I know for sure |
