Grundy’s Swamp...
Liberty Belle, the Emerald Archer, and Fury flew across desolate land in Fury‘s Invisible Plane with Hawk Warrior soaring along side of them, a loud mumble and the sound of several men shouting leading them to their destination. Emerald Archer grabbed hold of Liberty Belle’s wrist securely, looking down fearfully at the muddy swamps below.
“Over there, look!” Fury noticed, landing on the ground in front of the huge Solomon Grundy. Jade Sentinel had formed a construct that was doing a poor job of keeping Grundy under control.
Dreamsweeper and Lightspeed were running around him, futilely attacking him, doing hardly any damage. Ground Zero was slowly recovering from an injury, as his costume had been torn at his arms, which were bruised and bloody.
“What’s going on here?” Hawk Warrior enquired, as Jade Sentinel sweated with exhaustion. Keeping Grundy restrained was proving to be very difficult.
“Solomon Grundy has risen again! I swear, it wasn’t that long ago when we last apprehended him. However, there is a difference...he seems smarter, and keeps demanding to see Dr. Fate. For whatever reason, I don’t know...right now, my main issue is knocking this fella out!”
“Sentinel, stop keeping him within your construct before you die from exhaustion! We need a plan to take him down...”
“Are you sure about this?” Jade Sentinel asked, sweat dripping down his chin. “He’s a danger to us all!”
“Fling him a few dozen feet away, to give me some time to form a strategy here,” Liberty Belle replied, “there was once a time when I was leader of my own team of heroes, remember?”
Jade Sentinel nodded in agreement, and mustered his strength to fling him across the landscape. He fell to the ground, breathing heavily. “Give me a minute to recover,” he asked, clutching his tired arm.
“Alright team, group up!” Liberty Belle ordered. Ground Zero, Dreamsweeper and Lightspeed all ran towards her, all of them tired and slightly hurt. “We need a plan...I suggest weakening him first, then using our heavy hitters to take him out.”
“That sounds good,” Hawk Warrior agreed, as he looked across the swamp to see if Grundy was back up and running again. “What do you want us to do?”
“Okay, give me a second to think...” Liberty Belle said, closing her eyes in deep thought. She opened them and immediately zoomed towards Solomon Grundy, who was charging at the team again. “Dreamsweeper, Emerald Archer, you’re the most fragile members –“
“I do like to feel like I’m useful,” Emerald Archer joked, much to Dreamsweeper’s annoyance.
“So stay behind me and attack him at long range. Ground Zero, when you can, sneak behind Grundy and wait for my orders. Fury, stay close to the battle, and Hawk Warrior take to the skies for my signal. Jade Sentinel, hurry up and get your breath back because we’ll need you! Lightspeed, stay close to Fury – you’re a vital part of the plan too.”
The team nodded as they each took their respective positions. Liberty Belle braced herself as she glided at full speed towards Grundy, pulling back her fist and hoping that she would have enough momentum and super strength to at least stop Grundy in his tracks for a second. She screamed as she punched Grundy square in the chest, with such force that she was sent tumbling backwards! Grundy, being much heavier, only fell back a few feet, but by his loud yell, she had done some damage to him.
“Emerald, Dreamsweeper, attack now!” She commanded, pulling the hair out of her face and catching her breath. Her fist ached even though she had barely hurt the monster.
Emerald Archer ran forward and fired an explosion arrow directly at Grundy’s feet, whilst Dreamsweeper aimed a pellet at his chest too.
The arrow exploded around his feet, making Grundy tumble backwards.
“All right! Emerald Archer strikes again,” the bowman congratulated himself, as Dreamsweeper caught up with him.
“This is no time for self-praise, Emerald Archer,” he said in a no-nonsense tone of voice. He watched as his time-released pellet exploded around Grundy’s chest, causing him to fall flat on his back. “We should be ashamed that we had not thought of a strategy as good as this!”
“Newsflash, Dreamboy, I wasn’t on the scene when this battle began! So I’m definitely not to be ashamed about anything!”
“You should be ashamed that you didn’t get to the Brownstone in time and ended up missing out on joining us on this mission. Perhaps then, your amazing tactics could have saved us hours of worthless fighting,” Dreamsweeper replied, a cold tone in his voice. Emerald Archer looked away and chuckled at his rather serious teammate’s remarks.
“Ground Zero, attack him now!” Liberty Belle shouted at the top of her lungs, flying past Emerald Archer and Dreamsweeper. Jade Sentinel took to the air behind her and told the two to keep up with the fight.
“DYNA RINGS, ENERGIZE!” Ground Zero shouted, as his hands glowed with power. He smacked them into ground, sending a shock so powerful that it managed to move Grundy off the ground, smack down and roll over. He screamed again, getting to his feet.
“WHERE IS DR. FATE?!?” He roared, clapping his hands together and sending Ground Zero flying. Fury leapt over at Liberty Belle’s word and began to beat up on him, attacking him with various punches and kicks all over his body. She picked him up, not even struggling as she held him high above her head. She screamed out a battle cry as she chucked him back across the swamp, where Lightspeed was running around in small, tight circles.
He created a mini tornado, catching Grundy in a small cushion of air that broke his fall.
“GRUNDY GONNA BE SICK, LET ME OUT FAST MAN!” Grundy whined like a little child, much to Lightspeed’s delight.
“As you wish, Solomon,” he replied, as he ran up and up around his tornado, eventually pausing for a split second behind Grundy and, using the power of the tornado behind him, kicked Grundy in the spine. Grundy again was sent flying, disoriented when he crushed a tree as he landed.
Jade Sentinel flew overhead, creating a huge fist. “Let’s see how you fare against my lantern constructs!” He challenged, repeatedly slamming the huge hand into the villain’s chest. The villain was dazed as Jade Sentinel stopped. Grundy once again stumbled to his feet, adamant that he wasn’t going to back down. Hawk Warrior flew overhead, slamming his mace into Grundy’s neck. Grundy fell again, seemingly knocked out cold.
“Finally, he’s out,” Fury said as the team regrouped around Solomon Grundy. “Honestly, it felt too easy...”
“It certainly did,” Dreamsweeper said, walking towards Grundy’s head. “I’m going in, to see if anything strange is going on.”
“Dreamsweeper, wait!” Jade Sentinel said, trying to grab the keen superhero before he disappeared. He was too late, as Dreamsweeper had entered the mind of Solomon Grundy...
Dreamsweeper shuddered as he entered Grundy’s mind. It was a dull red, a room that never ended, covered with slime and thick air.
“I should have known his mind would be full of air, just like his head,” he commented, before pausing in his tracks. A tall, looming figure stood before him. The figure was foggy and was hard to see, but Dreamsweeper knew that whatever it was, didn’t belong there.
“W-Who are you?” He asked, edging forward slowly.
“I am the Spirit King,” the mist cackled, suddenly disappearing. Dreamsweeper looked around, his sleep gun in his hand, ready to attack. The mist appeared behind him, and a foggy hand appeared and grabbed his gun. “And you, are defeated!”
Dreamsweeper yelped as the Spirit King entered his body, taking control of the hero. He removed the mask from Dreamsweeper’s face, and used the hero’s fists to punch himself in the face numerous times. Within seconds, the boy had helplessly knocked himself out.
“Time to leave this putrid dump,” Spirit King laughed, taking Dreamsweeper’s gun and leaving Grundy’s mind. “This team was no help to me, time to go and check up on my other enemies. Hopefully I left enough influence in Ultra-Humanite to actually keep fighting them without questioning himself,” Spirit King thought to himself. He appeared invisible to the team, hiding behind a tree and taking the form of a man in a suit to watch as Grundy came to again, tripping up Liberty Belle, Emerald Archer and Ground Zero.
“Now that Grundy thinks that the JSU has attacked him, he should buy me enough time to get over to Manhattan and demand that Dr. Fate face me there! If only I could get over there quick enough...”
Spirit King entered Lightspeed’s body, cackling menacingly as Jade Sentinel, Fury and Hawk Warrior did their best to stop Solomon Grundy from attacking them again.
“Guys, I’m going to alert the other guys to our predicament, I should be back shortly!” ‘Lightspeed’ explained, speeding off before the others could disagree. Lightspeed raced off, appearing in Manhattan in seconds.
“Oh darn, Dr. Fate isn’t here either!” Spirit King said to himself. “Oh well, guess I’ll just take out this team, take them all back to the swamp where Grundy will have subdued the others, and then Dr. Fate will be forced to rescue his team-mates!”
***
Back at the swamp...
“Quick, Jade Sentinel, get him while he’s down!” Fury shouted, as Jade Sentinel finally restrained Grundy. He formed a huge fist with his ring and punched the villain into unconsciousness.
“Okay then, now we just wait for Dreamsweeper to come out,” he said, taking a well earned break by sitting against a tree. “He should be out any minute now...”
“Surely he’s stuck in there?” Fury asked, “I mean, I thought he’s trapped when the person he’s inside is awake?”
Hawk Warrior spotted Dreamsweeper’s sleep gun on the ground near a thick tree.
“No need to worry guys, he must have got out! His gun is here!”
“So where’s Dreamsweeper, then?” Liberty Belle pointed out as she nursed her head.
Jade Sentinel gasped and looked over at Grundy. “Oh my god! Dreamsweeper is stuck inside! And without his sleep gun, he’s definitely trapped!”
A blinding white light appeared in front of the team, and Dr. Fate appeared in all of his glory.
“Dr. Fate, you came just in time!” Jade Sentinel explained, “Dreamsweeper is stuck inside Grundy’s mind!”
Dr. Fate nodded and concentrated his energy on Grundy’s head, a light surrounding him as he worked his magic. Dreamsweeper appeared on the floor, hurt, but definitely still alive.
“Thank goodness, Dreamboy,” Emerald Archer laughed, “for a moment there, I thought we had lost ya forever!” Dreamsweeper sighed at his annoying teammate.
“We have business in Manhattan,” Dr. Fate explained, “Jade Sentinel, take us there now! We have very little time!”

Manhattan...
Lightspeed quickly grabbed Huntress by her cape, and threw her across the street before the vigilante knew what was happening. He caught her before she could land, spinning her around by her cape. The girl choked as the cape wrapped around her neck.
Batwoman screamed as she realized what Lightspeed was doing, running forward to help. Lightspeed let go of the Huntress, her cape ripping off her as she fell into Batwoman. The two women fell down, bleeding and unconscious. Wildcat ran towards Lightspeed, but he was no match for the speedster. He tossed his helmet at the boxer, cutting through his costume and through his chest. He then punched him in the gut, causing the newest member of the team to vomit all over the road. He discarded his helmet, then ran after the remaining three heroes, as Robin and Terrifica stepped out of the electronics store.
Lightspeed quickly took care of the three heroes, then turned on Robin and Terrifica, the latter of whom was grabbing three T-Spheres from her pocket and was unleashing them on him.
Lightspeed slapped them away, then kicked the girl in the face, knocking her out. Before Robin could react, he too was down on the floor, Lightspeed’s chop to his neck sending Robin’s body above and beyond its limits.
Jade Sentinel flew across the street, allowing Dr. Fate to leave one of his domes. The Green Lantern landed on the street, exhausted by the battle. Ground Zero was busy performing CPR on Dreamsweeper, who had stopped breathing on the way to the battle. Liberty Belle, Fury, Emerald Archer and Hawk Warrior made a human wall to protect the pair from any more damage.
“Spirit King, show yourself!” Dr. Fate commanded, white light emanating from him. Spirit King cackled, running Lightspeed into a lamppost, taking him out. Once again, he took the form of a man in a black suit, smiling as he had finally found his prey.
“You truly are pathetic, Spirit King. I hear from my team-mates that you were looking for me, but why? Last time we met, the Spectre banished you to Hell! I won’t be afraid to banish you there myself this time! You have no hope against me, the great Dr. Fate!”
“Put me back in Hell if you want, but first, get through my army of the undead!”
The five conscious members of the JSU gasped as two, maybe three hundred skeletons appeared out of thin air, running towards the team.
“We’re done for,” Emerald Archer said, readying his bow, “but if I’m going down today, I’m taking a few of those bony pests with me!”
He fired his arrows at the skeletons, taking out a few dozen as they ran across the street. Hawk Warrior and Fury charged into the army, using their strength to take down as many skeletons as they could. Jade Sentinel flew above the scene, crushing twenty at a time in a huge vice. However, more and more spawned, now turning their attention to the unconscious members of the JSU that were scattered down the street. Huntress groaned and said a small prayer as a skeleton prepared to kick her in the chest.
“THERE WILL BE NO MORE FIGHTING TODAY, SPIRIT KING!” Dr. Fate bellowed, using his magic to vaporize the undead army. He turned his magic on Spirit King, showing no mercy as the villain screamed for help.
“I’ll get out of Hell again, Dr. Fate! And mark my words, you’ll regret it!”
“I’m sure I will,” the Doctor said sarcastically, as Spirit King disappeared. He floated to the ground, using some more of his power to heal some of the teams more serious wounds. The Justice Society Unlimited regrouped in the destroyed street, exhausted, yet victorious.
“Yikes, you guys sure get wrapped up with serious villains,” Terrifica sighed, readjusting her mask.
“Who’s this?” Jade Sentinel asked, removing dirt from the swamp off his face.
“Please, call me Terrifica,” the daughter of Michael Holt said, “I’m the successor to Mr. Terrific.”
“Hey Terrifica, how about we get you cleaned up back at the Brownstone?” Emerald Archer grinned, putting his arm around the woman. She removed his arm and looked at him with disgust.
“If the rest of the team is as disgusting as you, I think I’ll have to reconsider that effort.”
“Take no notice of that buffoon,” Huntress smirked, wrapping her cape around her herself. “Although, if you do want to come back to HQ to get yourself cleaned up, you’re more than welcome to, Terrifica.”
“Yeah, perhaps we could talk about joining our ranks too?” Robin laughed. Terrifica nodded, shaking Robin’s hand appreciatively.
“Let’s let the fire department take care of the mess,” Jade Sentinel, the leader of the team concluded, “we all need to get some rest, some of us in particular”, he looked over at Dreamsweeper, whose brave efforts had revealed the true foe to the team. He leaned against Ground Zero, letting out a weak smile underneath his mask.
Liberty Belle grabbed Emerald Archer’s wrist, and took to the skies with him. The rest of the team followed, except for Batwoman and Robin.
“Dick, I’m so sorry for this morning,” Batwoman apologised, putting her arms around her boyfriend. “I was just a little tired, I didn’t mean it.” She explained, trying to hug the former Boy Wonder, but the caped crusader pulled her off.
“Dick...what’s wrong?”
“I’m not stupid, DiDi, anybody with brains can see that you still have feelings for that Green Lantern on New Earth.”
“What are you talking about?” Batwoman gasped, crossing her arms. “I can’t believe you’d think that! What gives you that idea?”
“I could see how you were looking at him at our meeting with the Titans of Justice. Come and speak to me when you’ve decided on who you actually want to be with.”
Batwoman wiped away the tears around her eyes as Robin left her standing in the middle of the street. Her feelings were torn. After her recent adventure on New Earth when she joined the Titans in battling their former leader, Celsius, her feelings for Green Lantern had been rekindled yet Sargona made it evidently clear that she wasn’t letting him go this time. Add that to the fact that the man that helped her when she was at her lowest point was injured earlier today and Di Di’s emotions were thrown into a flux. Which man should she be with? Green Lantern or Robin?
