1. Flash - Jay to Barry. Same powers. Barry > Jay. Reason: Better costume & secret ID. 2. Green Lantern - Alan to Hal. Similar powers. Alan = Hal. Reason: Hal had better costume/origin but I felt Alan was more likeable. 3. Hawkman - Carter to Katar. Almost identical except one was reincarnated/one was an alien cop. Carter > Katar. Reason: Katar was just another alien whereas Carter had a unique origin. 4. Atom - Al to Ray. Biggest change. Powers drastically different. Ray >>> Al. Reason: Ray's powers were so much cooler than Al's.
What are your thoughts about the updates to the 4 characters?

i agree that Atom is the best update.
I prefer Jay and Alan to Barry and Hal, but I will concede Barry's costume is way better than Jay's. I think Alan's costume is cool.
I honestly don't know which Hawkman I like. I liked the one from Johns JSA, but I'm not sure which that is (if either). I seem to remember a space ship crashing in Egypt, which would seem to indicate the alien cop, but he also definitely remembered Hawkgirl from previous lives which would indicate reincarnation.
edit: Now that I think about it, maybe Johns (or an earlier writer) combined the two origins? If that's the case than I prefer whichever Hawkman came second, as it allowed for the Johns version.

The Golden Age Atom had such potential. He was a college student with no powers and a bit of an attitude because he was short. You look at how much was done with Spider-Man's college settings later on and you can start to see what can be done with that. But those Golden Age Atom stories (and I admit I haven't seen very many of them) are terrible!
I get the idea that Atom was in the JSA by a fluke and somehow managed to be in every issue of All-Star (I think he missed two) just because he was the second All-American Comics feature and there just wasn't an alternative.
But I dunno. Maybe there was something about him that made him kind of popular in the 1940s. Maybe if Wildcat had been started a little earlier, he would have had that spot. The few Wildcat stories I've seen are much better than the Atom stories. And Wildcat had some villains that appeared more than once (The Huntress and the Golden Wasp)!

It's a tie between the Flash and Green Lantern for me. I can't decide.

Flash wins by default for me, because I read a wee bit Golden Age Flash but know absolutely nothing about the others from that era.

Here's an Atom story from 1947 that's not too bad. The Atom stories I've seen are earlier. It looks like it had improved some by 1947.
"The Atom's Rest Cure"

I've got to go with Green Lantern. While there was nothing in his first few appearances that made Hal particularly superior to Alan, the introduction of the Green Lantern Corps and the whole interstellar angle really took the property into exciting new directions that no other superhero title of the time was trying.

The Atom, Ray's powers and costume are superior to Al's.
Al still has the all time best Atom moment however, saving FDR's life in the JSA's untold origin.
I like Barry and Alan slightly more than their counterparts and the Hawks are a virtual draw.
