Wow. For once, Consumer Reports let me down.
Okay, what's plan B? I don't mind paying less than $10 a year for a URL for this place, but I really don't want to go beyond that.

You can get the domain for under $10 in a variety or registers, hosting is extra.

The domain is the virtual space, you can place content there, but to make it public you either have to turn your PC into a server or rent someone else's to do it for you (web-hosting).

Depends on who you buy the domain from. In theory, yes you can. But you lose the google search benefits of going with a different location for the frontage, don't you? I'm a little lost here, but if your new domain redirects to the forum, it doesn't add anything for the googlebot to index, and thus improve the positioning of the forum in the ranking. That's how I understand it.

That's how I understand it. I'll take your word for it. I wouldn't know. So then were you suggesting earlier that it's cheaper to just pay for the URL from one company and then pay another to host the page as opposed to doing an all-in-one service? I have neither a good enough computer nor a reliable enough internet connection to host a page myself, and I wouldn't be comfortable trusting any other amateur to do it either. CBR outages used to piss the heck out of me. I've been enjoying the stability we've experienced here thus far.

Not necessarily, going with separate companies may be cheaper, or not. Depends on the offers right now, where you live. I was just pointing out that web.com didn't seem like the best option. Then, you asked about just getting the domain, and I told you that probably wasn't what you want. As for which registrar/host to choose, I finally went with 1&1, I'll let you know how it goes.
