Titans of Justice Unlimited #110 - “Poisoned Part 2”

WHAM!!! Wonder Man was sent crashing through the floor down the first floor of the house. His sister followed through the hole, screaming like a banshee. She landed on top of her brother and started slashing away.





“Hera help me!” Wonder Man thought as he deflected her blows with his gauntlets. “What have they done to my sister?” he gasped, trying to get a break so he could get to his feet. He was able to get his knees to his chest and thrust his legs forward, sending the crazed Champion crashing through a wall. He shakily stood and tried to get his bearings.





BOOM!!!! A giant black monstrosity picked up the retired Titan and started thrashing him about. Wonder Man strained his neck to see an equally horrifying man with a ring. “Diamond Jack?” Wonder Man stammered.

‘”RARRRRRGGGHHHH!!!!” Diamond Jack screamed, as he twirled Wonder Man round and round, sending him crashing through a window and across the lawn.





“Need some help?” The Huntress smiled, reaching down to give Wonder Man a hand.





“Thank God.” Wonder Man flashed his smile as he saw The Huntress, Power Guy, Starman, and Corporal Marvel.

“What’s going on? Lilith sent the Flash a message that you were in trouble here.” Starman said to his former teammate.





“Trouble doesn’t begin to describe it. My sister…Diamond Jack too….” Wonder Man said.

“Diamond Jack? No one’s heard from him in ages.” Power Guy said, startled.





Just then the group felt the ground beneath them begin to rumble. Corporal Marvel turned and said, “Is…that..Champion?? What happened to her?”





The Titans were stunned to see their teammate had been transformed into something out of a nightmare. She reached into the ground, lifting it like one would shake out a rug, causing the Titans to tumble. Power Guy, Starman, and Corporal Marvel took to the sky. Huntress leapt into a nearby tree.

“I can take Diamond Jack out!” Corporal Marvel said, twirling his hammer as Diamond Jack aimed his ring, bile spewing from his mouth.

Corporal Marvel sent his hammer flying towards Diamond Jack. Diamond Jack simply laughed and created a giant black curved funnel, intercepting the hammer and sent it back at Corporal Marvel.

“Uh oh!“ Corporal Marvel gasped as his hammer smashed into his head, knocking him out.

Champion uprooted the tree where the Huntress was hiding. The Huntress held on for dear life as the tree thrashed around.

“Mindy! If you can hear me, please stop this! We can help you!” Power Guy pleaded, praying he would not have to fight his friend.

“ROOOOAAARR!!!” Champion growled, kicking Power Guy in the chest and sending him flying into Wonder Man. She then smashed the tree with her fists until she could reach the Huntress, who jumped out of the way and onto an awning of the house.

“That window….” The Huntress said, trying to buy some time and figure out her next move. As she made her way to the window and slid it open, she was taken aback as she saw two grotesque eyes staring at her.

“Breaking and entering? When did you become one of the bad guys?” Dr. Poison leered and plunged a syringe into the Huntress’s arm. The Huntress fell backwards towards the ground. Starman saw this and quickly created a padded construct to catch his teammate. He looked up and saw Dr. Poison slinking away.





“What did you do to her?” The Titans’ leader demanded.

“Starman….so sick…” The Huntress said as she vomitted. Starman noticed she was turning very pale and sweating.

WHACK!!!! Starman was struck in the head by one of Diamond Jack’s constructs. He spun around, dizzy and head throbbing. Starman tried to aim his cosmic rod. “I hate to do this to a friend, but you’re certainly not pulling your punches….” Starman shouted. He aimed his cosmic rod at Diamond Jack, just as Champion landed behind him. She plunged her claws into Starman’s back, thrashing him much like a puppy would do with a chew toy. CRASH!! She tossed him high into the air and smashed him into the ground, breaking his ribs.

“GWAARRRRRRRRR!!!” Champion squealed, seemingly with delight.

“What are we going to do? That’s my sister…we can’t hurt her.” Wonder Man said to Power Guy.

“We’ve got to do something. Huntress, Starman, and Corporal Marvel are all down.” Power Guy said, trying to assess the situation.

“Don’t panic guys, reinforcements are here!” came the voice of Apotheosis. He was accompanied by Nucleus.





“Not that I’m not glad to see you guys, but we may need everyone. We’ve got an out of control Amazon and a guy who can make pretty much anything he wants with his ring.” Power Guy said.

“That’s right you fools!” Dr. Poison laughed from atop the house. “I intended for Champion to kill her family, but if she and Diamond Jack kill the rest of you, it’s just cake! By the way, you better tend to the Huntress. She just came down with the most lethal strain of the flu. I hope she has her affairs in order! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!”

Snapping into his former role as leader, Power Guy said “Nucleus, see if you can get close to Champion and Diamond Jack. Get some tissue samples and see if we can determine what Dr. Poison's done to our friends and if it’s reversible. Wonder Man, you go after Dr. Poison and be careful. Apotheosis, you and I will help distract Champion and Diamond Jack so Nucleus can do his job.”

“What about the Huntress and Starman?” Corporal Marvel said, recovering from his blow.

“Huntress is in need of care. You take her to S.T.A.R. Labs quickly.”

“Will do!” Corporal Marvel said as he removed his cape and gently wrapped the shivering heroine. He lifted her in his arms.

“Sh—should…should’ve gottena f..f..flu shot…” she said as her teeth chattered.

“You rest, Huntress.” Corporal Marvel smiled reassuringly as he took off.

Starman had awakened, but was in no shape to fight. By now, Champion and Diamond Jack seemed to notice the Titans readying for round 2.

“Not much I can do with my ribs broken…but I can use my rod to give you guys some cover.” Starman said, gesturing to Power Guy, Apotheosis, and Nucleus.

Wonder Man took off into the house after Dr. Poison. He looked around, trying to determine where she went as the battle outside raged.

He noticed the floor had a different material in a corner and carefully examined it. He ran his fingers across it and discovered it was a door that lifted up to the basement. He walked down several flights of steps and found himself in Dr. Poison’s lab. Wonder Man was horrified to see photos taken in World War II concentration camps lining the walls as well as all kinds of medical specimens in jars. The smell of pheramaldahyde permeated the air and it make Wonder Man feel queasy. Notes detailing what had been done to his sister and Diamond Jack were on a table, as well as other notes detailing formulas and equations. Wonder Man quickly grabbed them.

“Taking my notes? Since when do air-headed models take an interest in science?” Dr. Poison sneered from the shadows, her eyes and teeth flashing.

“I never liked science. I was more of a English and History person.”

“No…you always got by on your looks. I know your kind. Wonder what you’d do if I rearranged your face…..would your wife still love you? Would your son recoil at the sight of you?”

Wonder Man felt his anger boil. “I’m not a Titan anymore, Dr. Poison. I don’t follow their rules. Right now, I am a member of the Royal Family of Paradise Island and our laws give me the authority to rip your head off.”

“Ohhhh! Now you’re talking!” Dr. Poison laughed, as she summersaulted over Wonder Man’s head.

Outside, Nucleus was able to shrink down and land on Champion’s shoulder. He wore a miniature hazmat suit and worked with microscopic tools, collecting tissue samples unknown to the crazed Titan. He leapt from her shoulder and gave Apotheosis a thumbs up.





Apotheosis, Power Guy, and Starman had kept Diamond Jack distracted, despite his intensified rage.

“I think I can shut Champion down!” Apotheosis said, getting near her. He started using his powers as Champion turned and faced him. “Guys, something’s wrong! I can’t---“ WHAM!!!! Champion cut loose with an upper cut, sending Apotheosis crashing into Starman, both men were knocked out.

Champion then tossed her head back and her jaws separated. Her stomach began to roll and a green vomit was released, covering Nucleus and sending his tissue samples flying.

Power Guy was now alone. Diamond Jack and Champion lurched towards him. He could feel the hate coming off of them as he stepped backwards.

“Don’t make me hurt you….” He said, unsure how this would end. With lightning speed, both creatures attacked him, razor sharp claws and teeth clamping down on him. Power Guy flexed, sending both of them off of him, only for them to shake off his attack and come at him again.

Champion’s arms wrapped around him and started squeezing the breath from his lungs. Diamond Jack hammered him with his black constructs, each one becoming more and more twisted. Then, Power Guy noticed a golden lasso wrap around Diamond Jack, tossing him away. The lasso then ensnared Champion.

“Niece, that is quite enough.” Came the voice of Donna Troy.





Back in the lab, Wonder Man was dodging Dr. Poison’s attacks. She was lunging at him with a scalpel. “Let me get closer and work on that pretty face!” she hissed.

“Sorry, this face earned me my first million.” He said, gauntlets deflecting her attack. Like a snake, she dropped to the ground and quickly got behind him.

“How did she--?” Wonder Man said, stunned.

“You know, I was going to experiment on you…see if I could replicate your genes for an army that would serve me…but I think a more traditional death is in order for you…I’m going to cut your throat and let you bleed out. I hope your damned grandmother is watching from above..or looking up from below!”

CRASH!!!! “Wonder Man doesn’t need your type of plastic surgery Dr. P!” Superboy said, punching Dr. Poison across the room after he had smashed his way into the lab.





Superboy smiled at Wonder Man, giving him a thumbs up.

Outside, Donna Troy struggled to confine Champion.

“The lasso….it’s not working—“ Donna struggled. Then, Champion grabbed the lasso with both hands, tossing Donna into Power Guy, knocking them unconscious.

Champion and Diamond Jack seemed to realize all the Titans had fallen and made their way to Dr. Poison’s lab.

“Ah, the newest member of the family! I had a feeling you’d show and I have a treat just for you!” Dr. Poison laughed as Superboy pinned her to the ground. She popped a cap off her tooth with her tongue and released a green gas.

“Kryptonite….” Superboy gagged, rolling onto his back.

“There, that should keep your little protégé occupied! And look!! Your sister and her friend are here to finish you off!”

Wonder Man stood facing his sister and Diamond Jack. He looked at Superboy, struggling with the kryptonite gas.

“Superboy, get out of here. Get outside away from the gas.”

“But..what about you..?”

“I’ll be fine.”

Superboy struggled to get up and flew outside, shaking off the effects of the kryptonite. Dr. Poison crawled atop an examining table cheering her creatures on.

Champion and Diamond Jack attacked Wonder Man with a savage fury. No matter how he fought, they were getting the better of him and Wonder Man began to think this would be the end for him.

“No negative thoughts, Wonder Man.” Wonder Man heard Lilith’s mental voice. He saw both Lilith and Sargona.





“Looks like someone needs a trip to the training room! Back in the day you could have wiped up these two blind-folded!” Sargona smiled at her former teammate.





“Enog eB!” she said as Champion and Diamond Jack disappeared.

“You---you witch! Where did you send my subjects!? My research!!!” Dr. Poison screamed, drawing syringes in each hand.

“Somewhere they can’t hurt themselves or anyone else!” Sargona snapped.

“D**n you all! But, I am still your better and I will fight you another day!”

“Watch out! She’s about to—“ Lilith started.

Dr. Poison tossed a swastika shaped device onto the floor and it released a gas, sending Sargona, Lilith, and Wonder Man into a deep sleep. The villainess then made her way to a trap door and made her escape, grabbing notes and files as she went.
