Very intersting essay on the differences in impression the Star Wars trailer made on the general public vs. the impression the SvB trailer made... BC articleand the impact those first impressions may have made on the initial box office those movies will get.... Could all be malarkey, but if you look historically at what kind of movies have had big box office takes early they are all movies that offer something fun and upbeat to a wide range of potential moviegoers. If he's right, DC could be shooting themselves and their movie aspirations in the foot with this dark tone on the first teaser trailer. -M I didn't enjoy Man of Steel, but at the least the trailer made me excited to see the movie. It gave the impression that the film would be a serious, respectful, yet positive and uplifting take on Superman. The BvS trailer looks like it's trying to sell a neo-noir, dystopian future sci-fi film.

Just to pinpoint the power of a trailer in financial terms-Vanity Fair is reporting The Force Awakens trailer gave Disney a $2 billion stock boost due to its positive reception. Vanity Fair article and early indications are it could shatter opening weekend box office and challenge Avatar's global take for the top grossing movie of all time. linky to articleI wonder is the Superman vs. Batman trailer giving WB any kind of stock boost? Man of Steel underperformed at the box office (it didn't do poorly but did not meet WB's expectations) and got mixed review so their follow up goes deeper into the things that kept the audience grumbling and seemed to kill desire for repeat theatre viewings (which is how blockbusters make big box office). I hope they're not shooting themselves and their tentpole plan in the foot with the decision to go in this direction. I want to see great DC movies, I'm just not sure the suits at WB and DC Entertainment can deliver based on the decisions we have seen. -M

I'm reposting this from the Upcoming Movie discussion thread... -M I'm surprised Disney would let that trailer get shown with Avengers. But, I guess the price was right. ....or they wanted people to see the trailer and boo it Batman vs. Superman: another DC superhero movie I can't wait to miss in theaters!

Disney doesn't get veto power. The studios are allowed to a block of trailers they decide accompany their films. The rest are determined by the theater owners based on what they think the audience for that film will want to see. Disney can say they want Ant-Man's trailer to accompany Avengers. But if the theaters want Batman v. Superman Disney can't do anything about it.

Except the guy who put forward the rumor is someone notorious for getting these kind of scoops, is right more often than not, and has been right with every other "rumor" he has put out about Batman v. Superman and Man of Steel before that, so the track record is in his favor of this being the plan they are following right now... -M
