oh lord. I do not really care if Bobby is gay, bi, or whatever he is. But this is why I simply cannot really stand Bendis on the X-Men: "Bobby suggests that he could be bi -- a distinction Jean agrees with, adding the qualifier that she thinks he’s “more...full gay.” Bobby also suggests that perhaps his older self simply had never come out because he couldn’t handle being a mutant as well as gay, the implication seemingly being that a trip to the “future” is enough for the younger Bobby to feel open with himself."
Northstar tried to be his boyfriend about 10 X-Men runs ago.
So, Bendis' stupid "Bring-the-05-back-to-Now story was AWESOME because Bobby was comfortable with being gay because he travelled to the future.

I'm not sure I have words to describe how stupid this is. That makes NO SENSE.

If they make past 616 Iceman gay (Teen Iceman from the 05), wouldn't that make alllll 616 Icemans gay?

If they make past 616 Iceman gay (Teen Iceman from the 05), wouldn't that make alllll 616 Icemans gay? Yes it would, and now readers who like the idea will probably insist that adult Bobby is also gay. Which we know he is not, because we've been inside his head and seen him act for several scores of years. This kind of stunt is, as far as I'm concerned, both silly and patronizing; it ignores decades of continuity for the sake of a few headlines in the general press. Sam Alexander? Fine. Red Hulk? Fine. Storm? Fine. But there are characters we've seen interested in the other gender for far too long for a sudden coming out to be believable. Bobby numbers among them, after the painful triangle he lived with Lorna and Alex, after his relationship with Darkstar and Opal, and even his recent fling with Kitty. This is as daft as Gwen Stacy having slept with Norman Osborn without us thought-bubble-reading fans having noticed.

Somebody's going to retcon the crap out of this probably as soon as Bendis leaves.
I, personally, do not care if they make every single version of Iceman gay. I hate the fact that Bendis did this on his way out the door. And he did it to troll. He wrote the X-Men so HORRIBLY. I *think* this is his last issue on the X-Men books. Good riddance.

Making Iceman gay doesn't make sense. I know there's a contingent of X-fandom that believes Bobby is gay for some reason despite his numerous heterosexual relationships, but this just feels like Bendis attempting to write softcore fan fiction in a published work. The fact that Jean just reads Bobby's mind and flat out tells him that he's gay is uncomfortable to read and is another instance of this version of Jean being an out and out asshole.

Don't you love how Marvel is hedging their bets? It's not the "real" Bobby Drake who is gay, it's the younger version from an alternate timeline. And it happens right before Secret Wars which may end up rebooting most of this status quo changing news anyway.

How has Ice Man been more into the opposite gender than previously-married-to-Black-Panther/dated-Wolverine-before-he-died Storm? That one's easy. Bobby has shown an interst in girls and has been shown dating them since he was introduced. The adult Storm showed no interest in men at all until she met Forge, ten years after her introduction; and even then, that relationship didn't lead to much. Ten years after that, her childhood bond with Tchalla was re-explored, leading to the strange, unexpected and doomed marriage stroyline from a few years ago. Then there was the even stanger relationship with Logan (akin to Captain Smerica suddenly showing an inteest in the Wasp, if you ask me). Not a whole lot for a 40 year history. Bobby has shown a continuous interest in girls for decades; Storm has shown a sporadic interest in men in the best of cases. That's why if a writer suddenly decided to have Storm come out as bisexual, I wouldn't say it went against continuity.

Or as a culture we are more willing to accept a woman may be passing or bisexual than we are that a man might be. There is is a huge double standard there where a two woman relationship is seen as having a mystique or tantalizing, but two men is almost always been taboo. It's changing, but the vestiges of that double standard still influence a lot of reactions to discovering a person (or character) is gay depending open whether they are male or female. -M

I think it suits him, actually the reality is that a lot more of the super population should be. I think its great for a start that these teenagers are actually interested in, and having sexual relationships, in comics, period. Fit, attractive(mainly) young adults, thrown into life threatening situations, its a wonder they ever find time to fight evil, in real life they would all be in bed most of the time.

In our western society, female homosexuality is far more frequent in male-targeted media than the opposite. (One of my friends once observed after seeing a certain movie and the audience's reaction to it that female homosexuality was a male fantasm, not a female one. As far as our mainstream media goes, I'd tend to agree).

I know that back on CBR we had a lot of discussion on Iceman being possible gay (going back to at least the early 2000s), so it's not really that surprising.
@rr: He has shown interest in women, but so have many gay man over their lives, mostly because in society that was what was expected of them.
It's noticeable that of the early X-Men Iceman showed no interest in Jean in the first issue of X-Men and over the years (until his relationship with Kitty), Iceman pursued girls and women, but once he was in a relationship, he immediately lost all interest in them. And then there was his relationship with Cloud way back in Defenders (Cloud had both a male and female form, something which turned Iceman off at first, but he later confessed to Cloud that he didn't care.)
