Apparently Joss Whedon is receiving a ton of hatemail and death threats over the movie and closed his Twitter account because of it. Apparently his "treatment" of Black Widow in the film and sterile=monster theme makes him a misogynist and he is somehow racist too. I don't even have words to express my reaction to this.... -M We had a thread on this ...
To me, the interesting thing is that one side took advantage of Joss Whedon leaving tweeter to automatically blame "militant feminists" and "social justice warriors."
And the other side ... well, let's give them some credit for showing some restraint in playing the blame game.

Just came back from finally seeing the movie. OVerall, it was quite enjoyable.
-- I thought they did a really good job with Tony Stark. I felt like these events could logically come after the last Iron Man Movie. Yes, he sorta 'retired' after it, but he had to fix his mistake...the running theme was he was trying to use technology to replace himself.
-- It was a little too Whedon-y at points.. some of the humor, while good, was out of place.
-- The basic plot was pretty similar to the 1st one... perhaps too much so.
-- I didn't like that Cap can't life Thor's hammer. A small thing, I know.
-- Best line of the movie was the 'Invaders lead to Avengers' one... totally geeked out there.
-- I definitely didn't like Russian Goth Wanda, but but the end I got over it. Her powers were a bit too random though.. it was VERY unclear exactly what they were going for.
-- Pietro dying was definitely a surprise...well done, though.
-- I've decided I really liked Hawkeye. He was pretty much just there in the 1st one, but he really had character in this one. The family thing was surprising, but fit nicely and really worked... especially his relationship with Black Widow.
-- While I didn't love Black Widow mooning over Hulk, I don't think it's evil or belittling. She kicked a whole lot of ass, even if I have no idea where those electro-mini-staves came from.
-- Nice use of the minor characters, but they really should have had Jane Foster at least for the party (I know, I know), and probably Pepper.
-- I haven't watched the season finale, but I really don't like the whole 'Coulson is dead in the movies' thing. Makes NO sense, unless it turns out to be a major plot.

Makes NO sense, unless it turns out to be a major plot. Went to see it with one of my sons today, and we agree that while we can't say it was a bad movie, it was also sort of disappointing. Beyond a simple tally of good parts and poorer parts, I think the simplest analysis is that it's not so much a movie as an episode in the Marvel Cinematic Universe ongoing series. Too many interludes that had little to do with the plot kept interrupting and making the whole film lose its focus. For my taste, there were way too many CGI battles. I prefer the scenes where characters are developed, and so my favorite part is probably the entire "Old Clint Barton had a farm" bit. I really don't understand the furore over Black Widow's treatment in this film. She kicked ass, saved the heroes' bacon on several occasions, and was captured (not "kidnapped") by Ultron drones after making sure the Vision's all-important cradle wouldn't fall into the wrong hands. Nothing shameful in that! And the whole bit about her being unable to have babies was meant to comfort Banner, not to bemoan her fate. When she says that she, too, is a monster, it's clear from the context that she refers to her having been molded into a perfect assassin. As for her budding relationship with the Hulk... well, why not? She's not defined by it, she's not limited by it, she's not made any less independent for it. She just feels attracted to Banner, who is indeed a pretty interesting guy. The Easter eggs were numerous and fun (I had missed that "Invaders to Avengers" line, Wildfire; good call!) but I did find the Vision a bit disappointing. His appearance was the first resolutely "superheroicky" look that we've seen in the Marvel movies, and I thought it a bit strange... why would a new being like that dress like a comic-book character? Furthermore, he talked and acted like Adam Warlock; that was a bit jarring too. The film will make a ton of money, no doubt, but I enjoyed Thor: the dark world more.

Too many interludes that had little to do with the plot kept interrupting and making the whole film lose its focus. At this point, I am treating the Marvel movies like one giant movie serial, each part a chapter in the whole story of the MU they are telling, much like I viewed the Lord of the Ring movies, the original Star Wars trilogy (which Empire pt. 2 was the best of but the least able to stand on its own without the other 2 parts), the Harry Potter films, etc. etc. etc. (pretty much any fantasy/action/adventure movie series since 1977). Each one is a part of a whole and not an isolated piece of work , so I usually don't judge it's merits on how well it stands alone. The same has been true of most prose genre fiction in the last 40-50 years, people want to see/produce stories on an epic scale and it takes more than 1 installment/experience to tell them, so I don't go in with an expectation that it will be stand alone, either by intent or execution. -M

It's funny you say that about Vision-as-superhero. My buddy I went with (who isn't really a comic book guy.. he just likes to go with me to the movies) referred to him as 'that Superman like guy'. I THINK what they were going for was he was dressing like Thor... he looked at him, then sprouted the cape. I see what you're saying though, since they do go out of the way to make the others less Superhero-y.

I'm with you on the Black Widow controversy. It's not as if I saw the movie and thought that people of a different mindset might be offended by BW's portrayal. She came across so clearly as a competent, important member of the team, that I never thought her portrayal would be labeled anti-feminist. And it seems were the only people who like Thor: The Dark World so much. It consistently gets ranked as one of the weaker MCU movies, but I feel like it was really fun. It was especially better than others in terms of pacing. To me, the beloved Winter Soldier and Iron Man 3 were too overstuffed, so they seemed to drag after a while. For both those movies, I checked the time to get an idea of how far along it was.

I'd rank it above Iron Man 2 and 3 and Hulk, if that helps...and even those I'd watch. Even the worst of these Marvel movies have been quite fun.

Finally watched this On Demand this weekend.
I liked it, although parts of it tended to drag.
I enjoyed these parts the most:
Black Widow and Hawkeye being best friends
Pietro and Wanda: would like to see more of them. I know he dies in the movie, but I hope they bring him back. I enjoyed the way they stuck together. The way she used her powers was like the way a dancer moves. Would love to see Quicksilver come back. I think his interactions with Captain America and Iron Man would be interesting, and with the Vision too.
The Vision: I knew he was in the movie, but wasn't expecting to enjoy seeing him so much. I never was much of a fan in the comics, but he came across as likeable in the movie. Wonder where this will go with him and Wanda.
The line up at the end: Reflects the constant state of flux in the Avenger's line up. Looks like Captain America and Black Widow will be training this group of Avengers
Black Widow and Hulk: I liked how she was able to get him to transform back to Bruce Banner. Good scenes there!
Not sure what I think about Hawkeye having a secret family. Definitely a departure from the comics, but interesting. I liked how Black Widow knew them and they were all close. Linda Cardellini is good. She and Jeremy Renner looked like a true couple on screen.
Ultron: menacing and clever dialog
Despite the long running time, I enjoyed it. Probably need to watch it again as there was so much going on, I probably missed little things here and there.
