So, I was at a Newbury Comics today - which is a chain up in New England - and they had a big rack of grab bags. I always wondered what they did with their non-returnable unsold stock, since they don't sell back issues. Well, now I know, though this seems to be a new thing.
Anyway, they had some dirt cheap grab bags of new comics - 5 for $2, or 10 for $5 (yes, they get more expensive if you buy more. I don't know why). You can kind of only see the front and back comics in the grab bags, so it's a bit of a crap shoot, though the bags seemed to be thematic. For instance one of the 5 for $2 bags all seemed to be lenticular covers from DC.
Anyway, I bought a 10 for $5 Grab Bag of indie books, which I am about to open. For those up in New England, this might be a fun way to try out some new titles.
The visible issues in my bag are Manifest Destiny #6 and The Tower Chronicles #2, which I have never heard of, but it's by Matt Wagner and Simon Bisley, so it should be interesting.
In a minute I'll open the bag and post the contents... LIVE!

Huh, interesting. So, the bag was pretty much as advertised. It turned out that it had The Tower Chronicles #2-4 in it, as well as Manifest Destiny #6-12.
So hopefully these titles don't suck!
I was hoping for a little more variety, to be honest, but for $5 I can't really complain.

I grabbed a couple of those Newbury grab bags last year on FCBD... I definitely got 10 different titles. I guess if you like the ones you get, that's a great deal. The Newbury nearest to me does a .50 bin instead, though, which is very nice

That second batch looks like it could even be a complete story arc, so not a bad deal. I think the grab bag concept worked a lot better in the past when done-in-ones were a lot more common, so you stood a much better chance of getting at least one (and more likely several) complete stories, versus today where everything is drawn out into 6 issue arcs.

I was hoping for a little more variety, to be honest, but for $5 I can't really complain. Tower Chronicles started as a series of OGN's-I think I have the first 2 by Wagner with art by Simon Bisley. I know I read the first and liked it quite a bit. I read the first 2-3 issues of Manifest Destiny-and loved the concept (Lewis & Clark explore America with a secret cryptozoological mission underlying the exploration) but it was a slow burn and decided to trade wait, I just never got around to getting the trades. -M

That's a good deal on back issues though even if they're grab bags. I read the first issue of Manifest Destiny and liked it but it was at a time where I was really cutting back on comics.
