Really weird thing happened to me the other day: I read an issue of Astro City and it wasn't absolutely awesome! The issue in question was #22, pictured below...  Anyone else read this? I think my main gripe is that not really very much happened in the comic. I'm used to a more thought-provoking story and a more emotionally satisfying conclusion with Astro City. I guess, as readers, we've just been spoilt by Kurt Busiek. But after the excellent 4-part Quarrel and Cracker Jack storyline, this was a major let down. Thankfully, issues like this are a real rarity with Astro City, but yeah....it just left me shrugging my shoulders at the end of the comic and think, "oh...is that it?" |

I feel like this volume of Astro City has been merely good rather than it's usual amazing. That said, the just finished Quarrel/Cracker Jack story (though a little confusing on where it fits in) was amazing... I haven't got 22 yet (it's probably coming next week), but I was kinda expecting a let down just because the last story was so good.
The previous one (with the little old lady and the evil robot museum) was very good as well, though pretty predictable. Before that, there were definitely a couple stinkers, and the 4th wall breaking end cap thing has already gone on way too long.

The story about the little old lady and her robots was great, as you say, and I also thought the one where Winged Victory suffered bad publicity and a public backlash regarding her training school for girls was a really good old school superhero romp. One of my favourite recent stories was the one (think it may have just been a one issue story) about the transgender superhero. That was a very moving tale and one that actually brought me close to tears. And trust me, I almost never get moisten-eyed over comic books. I'd rank that story somewhere up there with "The Nearness of You", in terms of great single issue Astro City tales. I do, however, agree that the thing with the 4th wall breaking purple guy has gone on way too long. |

You know, I forget the Winged Victory story was this volume.. that was pretty great. too.
The beginning (with the Call Center thing), and the whole ending ongoing thing are what stick out as 'meh' to me.. there was one other storyline in between I feel like wasn't all that great as well.
I guess though, if you're at about 1/2 totally awesome stories, that's a pretty darn good average... I think maybe I'm grading too hard due to past success.

I think the second year has been a lot better than the first. The "Winged Victory" story to me felt like the most conventional that AC has been, but since then, I feel the book has been firing on all cylinders. The "Dr Strange's assistant" story was great, the elderly lady who loved robots was great, the Quarrel story was probably the best female-centric superhero story I've read in years, and I loved the Starfighter story because Jesus Merino's art reminded of Al Williamson's art in a lot of places. The Sticks story is off to a great start, too.
