Weird to see Midnighter move into the core DCU lineup, especially as he was originally intended as a parody of Batman. He was used really well in Grayson recently too, though I don't think I'd buy a book where he was the main focus. The original Midnighter solo title had some real high points that are worth checking out, but Giffen completely ruined the series and plummeted it into cancellation when he took over.

I never read it that way. I read it as two very lonely weapons of mass destruction who could trust no one but each other. It felt more poignant than humorous to me. Apollo carried Midnighter simply because no one else would, and vice versa (in an emotional sense).
