Apparently after Secret Wars, Gillen will be stepping away from Marvel for a while to focus on creator-owned stuff (the exception being the Darth Vader book for Marvel), at least according to comments he made at Denver Comicon this past weekend. He's not ruling out returning some day but feels he needs to step away from the MU at this stage of his career to do other things. storyGillen is really hit and miss for me...I like some things he has done at Marvel and some of his creator-owned stuff (Loki, Phonogram), and other stuff he has done has left me completely cold (Uber for Avatar, his Iron Man run), so I wish him luck and hope it helps him produce better work and more satisfying work moving forward. -M

From what I understand he's not the only one. Hickman also mentioned focusing on his own work for a bit after Secret Wars.
Aaron seems to have scaled back his Marvel work as well, wondering who the big names for Marvel post Secret Wars going to be.

Dan Slott seems to still be going strong, with no signs of stopping. He posted a Tweet a few days ago about writing a Man-Thing book for Marvel after Secret Wars. Charles Soule and G. Willow Wilson recently signed exclusivity agreements with Marvel. Both of them have been giving increasingly higher profile roles at Marvel the past few years. In particular, Soule being in charge of the Inhumans franchise gives him a lot of responsibility given the large role that Marvel Studios is carving out for them.

I think for most creators at some point you better diversify and develop a fan base outside of the characters as you can all the sudden find yourself outside of comics looking in.

It's cool to be at the top with Marvel, but I'll bet the pressure is pretty intense as well.

Glad to hear it. I think it can really kill you as a writer, spending too much time working for Marvel/DC. Much rather see him working with his own creations.
