Yeah, loads of bats around here living in trees and below the roofs of older houses.

Likewise, both houses that I grew up in had bats flying around the garden at dusk on summer evenings. It's a very common site where I live.
I do live in Transylvania though.

Hank Pym did, in fact, have mental/emotional issues predating his super-heroic career. When his Hungarian wife was murdered on their honeymoon, Pymsy worked himself into a nervous breakdown trying to avenge her (cf. Tales to Astonish #44). Implicitly, it was this tragedy that drove him into the unorthodox avenues of research that resulted in his size-changing sera. Cei-U! I summon the backstory! Hey, thanks, Kurt! I read that bit about his wife in Avengers, and thought it was an impromptu back story. I didn't know the episode with his wife had actually seen print in old Tales to Astonish issues.

You're welcome, RR. Cei-U! Thought you'd be more impressed that I knew the plural of "serum!"

I never read those earlier stories and this is the first I ever heard of Pym's first wife. How did he end up marrying someone from Hungary? Was she a scientist too? Please say yes, I want another reason to like her better than the Wasp - because even knowing nothing about her, she already sounds less annoying than spoiled rich-girl Janet. It's a wonder no writer has ever tried to bring her back somehow, or at least have Pym or someone make a reference to her. Could be a good story in there somewhere.

There's pretty much no backstory on Maria Trovaya Pym, other than that she'd been involved in the abortive 1956 Hungarian revolution and was killed by the country's secret police when she and Hank unwisely decide to honeymoon in Budapest. Interestingly, her father is said to be living in the US, which means Pym has/had a father-in-law who was never mentioned again.
Cei-U! Where's Roy Thomas when we need him?

Didn't Maria come back as a computer program or something like that?

EDIT: You may be thinking of Maria Stark, Tony's mother, who did "return" as a computer intelligence in Avengers Annual #9.

Where's Roy Thomas when we need him? ...And that's pretty much how you sum up ten years of Marvel Conan comics...

Didn't Maria come back as a computer program or something like that? If she did, it was after I stopped following Marvel (circa '88). Cei-U! I summon the knowledge gap! This is why stuff like the whole Pym hitting Janet Pym story feels to me like something that never happened: I had already stopped reading the Avengers and Marvel comics in general by the time that issue came out, so it never became part of my Avengers experience - unlike earlier stories that I never have read, but that I know happened before or during or between the times when I was a regular Avengers reader. I have read a few scattered Avengers comics from the last few years, but not enough that I feel much connection with the old Avengers comics. So yeah, anything that happened after the Korvac saga doesn't seem relevant to me as far as the Avengers are concerned.
