Here's where we slap an open hand to our foreheads and chide ourselves for being so myopic that we missed the obvious signs of what lay ahead. It's those "surprising" elements whose seeds had been sown well before. For example, Avengers #90 (1971):
What are your "How did I miss that?" moments?

Oh man, you're gonna make me dig out ALL the instances of men slapping women around in comics and post the scans...

I was thinking of foreshadowing. See, here we have Hank Pym back-handing the Wasp and knocking her out years before the more famous instance for which he was (rightly) vilified. Rather than being one shocking moment, it suggests a pattern of abuse and something which we should have seen coming.

Ha, yeah I guess this out of context paragraph might hurt Hank further. But i was referring to the practice of "knocking someone out" for their own good , a plot device used often in both TV and Comics in the 50-60's.

Well, evidently Honeystinger felt that bore repeating. :)I won't argue. I'm familiar with the trope you describe, but it's generally employed against a drugged/mind-controlled partner, not a lucid, unsuspecting spouse. However, your point is well-taken. Maybe I'm reading too much into that panel.

Can the 'what lay ahead' part be included, perhaps within 'spoiler' tags? For the benefit of those who aren't familiar with what's being referenced. Of course! That was stupid and thoughtless of me. Apologies. Greater vigilance going forward, I promise.

Furthermore, if you read his first appearance on Tales to Astonish, Hank Pym was basically your garden variety bat#$%^ insane mad scientist. Thiw was never refeenced in his solo "Tales" strip, but all the displaced personality Yellowjacket stuff in Avengers (as well as.... what happened later) feels like it streams directly from that.

I'll have to reread it with that in mind. I assumed the insanity was the inevitable result of being Ant Man on a team with Thor. Kinda like how the BMX Bandit feels.

Hank Pym was always crazy? Just because he actually talked to ants and gave his favorite one a name back in the early days? Whats wrong with that?

I seem to remember him shooting himself out of a gun barrel to get across town. A huge number of ants gathered at his calculated arrival point to cushion the impact. Good stuff.

@ Phil Maurice: Oops! I'm having trouble putting the post I'm quoting into my own post. I meant to ask if anyone knows the context of this particular slap.

Hank also gave Jan Dr. Spectrum's jewel as a present. Nothing nuts about that idea! Poor Hank... In all honesty, all heroes did plenty of things that in hindsight are completely insane.

@ Phil Maurice: Oops! I'm having trouble putting the post I'm quoting into my own post. Just hit the "quote" button up at the top right of whatever post you want to quote in your reply. Then just write your reply after the quoted text (or after the last [/quote] markup if you're not writing in "preview" mode) and then hit the Create Post button at bottom right of the text pane. Hope that helps. I meant to ask if anyone knows the context of this particular slap. Google tells me that it's from Avengers #90 (published in 1971). Welcome to the forum honeystinger! It's great to see more females joining our community lately. I hope you enjoy your time here.
