 www.comicbookresources.com/comic-previews/airboy-1-image-comics-2015-2015Just read James Robinson and Greg Hinkle's Airboy #1 and as a huge fan of the Chuck Dixon run for Eclipse Comics in the '80s this was nothing like that at all. It's about Robinson who is experiencing writer's block trying to come up with an idea for a new Airboy comic. He meets with Hinkle to try to think up an idea and they end up going bar hoping instead. Their drunken and drug-fueled escapades are actually quite entertaining and I liked the artwork as well. This issue reads more like a William S. Burroughs story than an Airboy comic though. That being said I still greatly enjoyed it even though it left me asking "what the hell did I just read". Really looking forward to reading more of this. |

The little I've read of James Robinson has pretty much made him my least favorite writer ever. It seems that his only real goal in writing is to de-hero-ize superheroes into being the guy next door that you grab a beer with on Fridays. I find that outlook disappointing. The world is already lacking in heroes; I don't need my expectations grounded in escapist fantasy too.

It seems that his only real goal in writing is to de-hero-ize superheroes into being the guy next door that you grab a beer with on Fridays. I find that outlook disappointing. LOL. Starman was really good Shax, I think you'll like it... sounds like a review thread to me I remember reading something by Robinson, around the time he got 'hot' with Starman and loving it. But I missed a few issues of Starman so won't read it until I fill in those gaps. Seems like most of his stuff since Starman has been panned. |

Leave it to Chance is my favorite Robinson book, with Starman and Golden Age close behind. His Shade maxi in the early new52 days was also quite good, but he's had some misses too. He was the driving force behind the JSA revival too (that Johns is better known for, but it was Robinson (with Goyer) who got it up and running and set the tone for the series). His short run on Cable in the 90s was decent too, but he was also the guy the Image boys turned to to mop up Heroes Reborn.

Loved his JSA and Golden Age.
Someday gonna get the complete Starman.
I'll wait until later to see what the reviews say regarding this Airboy. Loved Dixon's pulpy version.

And as resident Grendel fan: Four Devils, One Hell was one of the better Grendel Tales. (Not as good as any Grendel written by Wagner himself though). Overall Robinson has done some good work, but most of his recent work hasn't interested me at all.

Overall Robinson has done some good work, but most of his recent work hasn't interested me at all. It was Teddy Kristensen's artwork that saved that mini. The imagery was perfect for that story. Given to another artist, it would've weakened Robinson's words. |

I bought Airboy #1 because I was a fan of the old Eclipse revival series, but Robinson totally subverted my expectations. I still loved it, though, and the ending to #2 really has me intrigued as to where it's heading.
