So, with the death of the Pittsburgh Comicon and its subsequent unholy resurrection as a Wizard World show, I am looking for other shows within a day's drive to go to the rest of this year to get my fix. Due to having in-laws living north of Dayton where I can crash for free, I figured either Cincinnati or Toledo might be options, but when I'm looking at Cincinnati for later this year, I am finding two shows within a week of one another. One is the Cincinnati Comic Con and the other is the Cincinnati Comics Expo.
It looks like the Comic Con will be having Bill Willingham, Cullen Bunn, Evan Dorkin, Jeff Parker, and Ben Templesmith, while the Expo is going to have Neal Adams, George Perez, Marv Wolfman, Bob Hall, Lee Weeks, and Mark Bagley (but I wish they would update their website, as they are still advertising the recently-passed Herb Trimpe as a guest).
For those of you in that area or who have attended ether or both previously, what's the lowdown on these two events in regard to the quality and quantity of comics dealers at each show? Guest-wise, it looks like the Expo is where I would gravitate, but if the dealers there are lacking, I might head to the Con.

Don't know much about either, but having George Perez and Marv Wolfman at the same venue sounds like a priceless opportunity to me.

About Wolfman and Perez, neither one is currently listed on their site. Either I was looking at last year's list that was still on their website (not likely) or they cancelled, but that is a main reason why I am not attending that show, along with the fact that the vendor list is not all that impressive (quantity-wise, as I know nothing about the quality of the vendors themselves). I also did not see Mark Bagley (or Herb Trimpe, thankfully, RIP) the last time I looked, but they had updated it to announce that both Adam West and Burt Ward were going to be there.

He seems to genuinely LOVE meeting fans, so I'm betting you were looking at last year's info. Disappointing either way, though

Wolfman and Perez were both there last year (I couldn't make the show) so I doubt both are there this year.... here's the current ad for the Cinci ComicCon love the retro feel of the ad.... -M

Expo seems to be a much more media centered show than the con, their big draw this year is both Adam West and Burt Ward it seems. here's their current web page ad... Expo-M PS The difference, one only wants big name guests and no small fries and charges $300 and up for tables as vendors or artist alley, one wants to be inclusive and charges less than a third of that for tables for potential vendors and artists. I will let you decide which is which by the way they advertise and promote their guests.

One of the shows is trying to bigfoot the other. The same thing happened in Boston. Wizard World came in and tried to knock off Boston Comic Con by poaching the better site and squatting on the date so they could lure away fans who didn't have the time or money to go to both and thus squeeze Boston Comic Con out of business. It backfired spectacularly, and Wizard hasn't shown their useless faces around these parts since.
But I'm sure that's what's happening. The big media show is likely trying to squeeze out the comic-centric show by drawing fans away to see their "stars" in hopes of cornering the market. Cutthroat garbage.

The big media show is likely trying to squeeze out the comic-centric show by drawing fans away to see their "stars" in hopes of cornering the market. Cutthroat garbage. It's deeper than that, the two promoters used to be partners and had a falling out, so there is a personal spat mixed in as well. They've been asked by local dealers and creators to split up the shows moving one to the spring but neither will be the one to blink. One isn't even in Cinci, it's across the state line in Kentucky but still uses the Cinci name to spite the other, etc. The rivalry extends much beyond business. The one thing they have in common is they were both opposed to Mid Ohio Con in Columbus being taken over by Wizard World a few years back, as that show runs a month after their and bleeds some of their traffic. Mid Ohio was a longtime staple of the Ohio comic scene and use dot be pretty big on the national scene, then ran on some hard times, and got bought out by Wizard World who changed it's focus as they are wont to do. None of the promoters of local shows were too happy with Wizard muscling in, but that late fall con is such a staple here, lots of people still go despite it being Wizard World now. -M
