The thing with retailer exclusives is that the retailer has to commit to ordering a certain number of copies of the store variant on top of what they order for the regular cover and any publisher variants, and commission the art for the piece if they want something more than a generic cover with the store name/logo on it (like all the Afterlife with Archie retail variants which used the same art with different lettering in the window), so those stores are making quite a commitment to the book. Unlike publisher initiated variants, these are initiated by the stores if the publisher offers it, and the store has to order essentially the entire print run of that variant. It really is an advertising marketing blitz for the shop as well as the book itself, but it is expensive, so the shop must believe it can move all those copies they must order to meet the minimum.

I thought Waid/Staples was only going to be on for the first arc.

SO I was at the local Kroger today, picking up a few things for the end of the month and trying to reach the next spending threshold for the month (we needed to spend $10 to get additional gas discounts for the month and it's double points on weekends) and I had $8 worth of groceries in my cart when I walked by the magazine aisle/rack, and lo and behold there was a stack of the newsstand versions of the new Archie #1 by Waid and Staples. Just enough to get me over the $10 after our coupons and excited to be buying a comic off the newsstand rack for the firs time in forever, I grabbed a copy made my way to the check out and came home. I will probably sit down and read it tonight after the Sox game on ESPN.

17 Different Variants for Archie - to me it's NUTS!Only if you buy all 17. Some of those covers are awful in my opinion Actually...I don't mind if there are so many variants. If I had my own outlet in the USA I'd be considering adding myself to the variant list.

Well the Kroger always had Archie Digests at the check out counter, but these were in one of the aisles with the magazines and books, but the magazine section was visible from one end of the checkout area. The mag section had Archie #1, a couple of digests, the Walking Dead magazine and Star Wars Insider, but nothing else that would be comic related or available at most comic shops. The checkout I went to did have a couple of Archie Digests as well, but like I said, Kroger has had that for a long time (the only other place in town that did was the K-Mart but it closed earlier this year). -M

Once in a while I see an Afterlife magazine at the grocery store, last one I saw was #4, I always pick one up when I see it.
