Someone helpfully pointed out that wikipedia is correct - reading the full sentence, it says that Sky Masters is based on an earlier strip proposal called Space Busters, which did not sell.

And my favorite strip being published today: Luann by Greg Evans. It started as a gag-a-day strip about a teenage girl but has evolved, a la Funky Winkerbean, into an ongoing realistic story with a large cast of delightfully believable characters who are aging but not quite in real time. The strip started in 1985, and Luann was then 13. This week, she graduated from high school. I'm eager to see what happens to the gang next. Wow, Rob, we really differ on Luann. I read Luann every day too, along with the rest of the usually bland strips appearing on the funnies page, and I have to say it is often with a measure of frustration and incredulity. I know its a family strip, but the characters and situations presented in Luann resemble no one and nothing I can recall from my high school days. I find it annoyingly unbelievable, unrelentingly phony and devoid of any compelling characterization. Yikes, I know I'm being harsh. "Freaks and Geeks" might be too much to expect from a family strip, but even decades earlier Milt Caniff knew how to throw in searing moment and poignant turn. Luann is dullsville to me and lacking any of the turbulence associated with the teen-age years. Sorry Luann fans and I know there are lots of them! The only redeeming strip I find on the comic page today is the still astonishingly regularly pitch perfect Dilbert.

In related news, isn't it time to put down Fred Basset already?

In related news, isn't it time to put down Fred Basset already? Fred Basset was put down decades ago. It is the only way to explain the bizarre, humourless zombie that shambles through the comics pages? Honestly, is there anyone who finds Fred Basset funny?

I don't know why we are singling out Fred Bassett in the same universe that has Heathcliff and Mallard Fillmore.

Maybe it's because Fred Basset is the only comic strip running in the only daily newspaper in my town. I bet the editor likes dogs or something.

Dilbert is on my top-five list also. I think his cubicle must not be far from mine.

The comics on this list that I'm familiar with fell out in pretty much the right places. I like this list and am now intrigued to check out the titles I'm not familiar with.
However, it would be interesting to next ask what the All time GREATEST newspaper strips were. As much as I personally prefer Calvin and Hobbes, Bloom County, and the Far Side, there's no denying Little Nemo should be outranking them all in terms of sheer quality. With comic books, we seek out the classics of yesterday, whether or not we personally grew up with them, but I think Newspaper strips work differently. We remain attached to the ones we knew.
Thanks much for doing this, Ish!

We love our classic comics but not alot shown for classic newspaper strips or the adventure genre in general here. For me the strip form just doesn't work well for adventure; it's just too broken up into small pieces and I don't care for having to wait a day for the next tiny piece. I do enjoy the Mickey Mouse adventure strips in collected form, but in the newspaper it would just be too annoying. IMO the strip form best lends itself to done-in-one bits, which tend to be gags and humor.

I don't know why we are singling out Fred Bassett in the same universe that has Heathcliff and Mallard Fillmore. Neither of those runs in any newspaper I read (and I don't know if Mallard Fillmore runs outside of the US, I only know it from the various lambastings of it I've read online). But Fred Basset, for unfathomable reasons, seems to run in a paper in every capital city in Australia.
