"Southern Bastards," the Southern-fried crime drama by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour, is headed to television. Deadline reports that producer Scott Rudin ("True Grit," "The Social Network") has optioned the Eisner-nominated Image Comics series for FX, once home to "Justified," "Sons of Anarchy" and "The Shield." Aaron and Latour will serve as executive producers and adapt the comic. Debuting in April 2014 from Image, "Southern Bastards" initially centered on Earl Tubb, the son of a former sheriff of Craw County, Alabama, who returns to find his hometown now controlled by the ruthless Euless Boss, revered head coach of the high school's powerhouse football team. With the release of the ninth issue this week, the series begins to broaden its focus to other characters. "The theme of the next arc is homecomings," Aaron told CBR News last week. "So it's all about homecoming week and the big homecoming game, which is against Craw County's biggest rival, Wetumpka County. So we'll have some separate almost standalone issues that focus on different characters that all flow together as we build over the course of homecoming week towards that big game."

I picked up this series totally on a whim, knowing nothing about it except for the creators, when I saw some extra copies of the #1 on the shelf at my LCS. Probably the best series I started reading without knowing anything going in. Good to hear that the creators have been able to sell this to TV. Should make a good series.

Vaguely reminds me of Scalped, another series Jason Aaron did, also coming to tv soon.
SO good too. Highly recommended. Think The Sopranos on the Rez. Yeah, it's that good.

Have been loving this book for a while now, and the comparison to Scalped is apt, though mainly in that they are both southern crime books. Hell they may be a lot closer, both offer little in the way of redemption, though you follow people desperately trying.
As an aside, Im getting a very narrow view of southern life from these and Justified. Are you'all so downright mean and nasty...

It'll be really interesting to see how they make this a TV show with the way the series is structured.... I wonder if the 2nd arc about the coach with be mingled into to the 1st arc as flashback sequences, or just skipped all together? Either way, should be good, since they went and ended Justified on me.

Southern Bastards AND Scalped? TV and movies won't be happy until I'm watching everything I'm reading...
