I think my first issue of Marvel Team-Up was #87, featuring Spidey and Black Panther. I didn't buy it off of the stands in 1979 though, it was given to me with a handful of other comics that my Grandmother picked up for me at a jumble sale, circa 1982 or so.

To me, one of the most memorable Spider-man storylines was from MTU--the story of the original Wraith and Captain DeWolf.

I read that run of MTU for the first time earlier this year and was really struck at how high-quality those issues were, as my initial experiences with MTU were not all that impressive.

The link with the original, is quite circumstancial, though. Worth it? Not really.( spiderman.boards.net/thread/84/spider-man-spiral).

And Woodgod - was that MTU? It was, written by Mantlo (53-55)

I'd say #58 with Power Man and the burning building is one of the all time best single issue Marvel Comics stories. That was issue 75.

The sad thing for all of you fools is Marvel Two In One is the better book, hands down. How can that web headed punk compete with the MuthaLovin Thing man? Yeah, MTiO was the better book. While Marvel Team-Up was almost always a lot of fun, MTiO had a lot of weirder, wilder stories. I think that MTiO was often a place where the creators could throw whatever ideas they had against the wall to see what works, and a lot of those ideas did really, really work, even (and perhaps especially) when they seemed crazy. There also seemed to be more of an emphasis on fringe elements of the Marvel U, and creators who were more idiosyncratic like Gerber or just starting out with loads of ideas like Gruenwald and Macchio. MTU was a bit more conventional, probably because Spider-Man had a larger presence in most people's minds and brought in better sales. Still, there was a lot to love in MTU.

Interesting. I think the Claremont/Byrne and Dematties/Gammil runs in team-up were stronger than any sustained stretch of Two-In-One, but that Two-In-One sustained a higher median level of quality. (IE: It didn't have so much crap like the Man-Wolf Frankenstein story or the Defenders/Devil Slayer story, or the Howard the Duck story, or any of the freaking Human Torch led stories....)

In rebuttal I would submit the Project Pegasus issues in MTIO.

In rebuttal I would submit the Project Pegasus issues in MTIO. OBVIOUSLY I love those... and the Impossible Man, GirlStarHawk, and Serpent Crown stories that followed*, but I thought they were just a tad choppy. Gruenwald and Macchio's writing process - if I remember this right - was to alternate the writing every other page without consulting the other guy about what they were doing. Which lead to a lot of surprising, fun, and unpredictable twists! But not to a particularly cogent narrative. * Also the Gruenwald written capstone to the whole run which was in Marvel Team-Up Annual # 5 (Not Two-In-One, for some reason.) It was basically a Project Pegasus/Serpent Crown Team-Up, with the Thing, Spider-man, Quasar, the Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange.

As I think back on those team-up books, I rather enjoyed that most of them were done in one. Project Pegasus and the Search for Warlock springs to mind as my favorite of the MTIO books. MTIO was more plausible for team-ups because the Thing traveled all over , where as , Spider-man was NY based.

After consulting with my 9 year-old daughter, who has read over 50 issues of both MTU and MTIO in the Essentials I've picked up for her (as well as a bunch of floppies of MTU), she indicated that she prefers MTU over MTIO. She said it's because she likes Spidey more than Thing, but that MTIO isn't bad.

I seem to recall a horrible, horrible storyline in MTIO where The Thing was a professional wrestler. Or was that just a nightmare?
