How many Marvel books came out in 86? You've found five with a $1.50 cover price. And that does not explain why Marvel costs more today, without offering better materials, higher page counts, or fewer ads. Also, the $3.99 comics aren't really comparable to the few higher priced Marvel comics of 1986. The $4.99 ones are. Those 6 were the only ones on higher quality paper and cover stock equvalent to the books the indies were putting out. Again, the five with the $1.50 cover price were on higher quality paper and cover stock, comparable with the indies and priced comparably with the indies. These are apples to apples. The rest of the Marvel line was produced on newsprint with more ads for revenue and cost less to produce and are priced less. These are oranges. When you look at how Marvel is pricing their products that are equivalent to others in the industry, the prices are equivalent and have risen at an equivalent pace. Trying to compare newsprint comics to higher end products is trying to compare VHS tape prices with Blue Ray prices. The content may be the same, but the packaging and product is different, so prices are not directly equivalent. This is the data. Make your conclusions fit the data, don't keep trying to shape the date to fit the assumptions you made before looking at the actual data and discarding/ignoring the data that doesn't fit. -M

I don't see Marvel producing an equivalent product today. Or a "better" product, since they cost more. Those $3.99 comics are littered with ads, and in the experience I had several years ago, on poor quality paper. The poorest quality, with the cover stock being the same as the interior pages. And lower page counts. I'm not shaping anything to make it fit, you are. Marvel's product has skyrocketed in price when compared to the competition. Usagi Yojimbo has gone up in price 75% in 20 years. Amazing Spiderman has gone up about 500%.
